No one is arguing the significance of the Jim Joyce blown call, obviously that had more of an impact on an important situation. But that's not what we're discussing. It was an egregious call, but at least you could kind of see it being bang-bang ... This was obvious from the second the ball beat the runner by 10 feet.

As indefensible as the Jim Joyce call was, this is much, much, much, much, much worse.

Stop lying. He's out by a half step, and even if not, he still came much closer to being safe than Lugo did (and by that I mean that he actually touched the base). Besides, a play at first is much harder to call for an umpire, you have to watch the runner's foot and the fielder's glove at the same time.

You can kind of justify Joyce missing a call at 1B with the runner hustling down the first base line (though in that situation it was horrendous), but a play at the plate where the runner doesn't even try to touch home plate and is tagged out in the right hand batters box should never ever, ever, ever, ever be called safe. Lugo had all but conceded the out until Meals signaled safe.

Both were terrible calls, neither are defensible, but being out by 10 feet > being out by one (or if we let you tell it, two) steps.

On the third replay, it doesn't look like he tagged him at all. It looks like he missed the tag completely. On the first two, I can't tell. I see no distortion on Lugo's stripe on his pants. Which is exactly where the tag should have landed.

BTW, keep watching and you'll see the Galarraga near perfect game. The baserunner is three feet away from first base when Galarrage catches the ball and puts his foot on first. Not even close.

First of all, stop saying "if the Pirates finish a half game back...". You can't finish a half game back.

Secondly, why do you keep comparing this to Galaragga? That blown call cost him a personal achievement, this blown call is affecting a pennant race. This call was more important. Galarraga's team still won the game. The Pirates were potentially robbed a win in a tight race. Pennant race > personal achievement.

Then you bring up Jeffrey Maier and Tony Torasco, and talk about how that was a playoff game, then blow off the fact that the Braves and Pirates are both contenders.

We can argue the sematics of "what call was more important" all day, but that doesn't change the fact that you seem to be the only person on the planet who doesn't see this cut and dry, including Jerry Meals!

You look at the play. You look at the ball. You look at the player touching the base.

No tag. Lugo touched home. Safe. Game over.

Look I understand the ump says he blew the call, and thats fine. Frankly, I think some pressure is being put on him by Major League Baseball. But I've seen that play at least 20 times. At no time does it look like the catcher tagged him. It looks like he missed. I know I'm not the only one that thinks so.
