Kiper Says Chiefs Should Take Te'o #1

ESPN's Mel Kiper believes the Chiefs should select Notre Dame ILB Mant Te'o with the first overall selection, if they end up with it in April.

Kiper explains this decision by saying no top quarterback stands out at the top and the Chiefs do not need pass rushing help from the outside linebacker spot due to Tamba Hali and Justin Houston already being on the roster. We believe one of the quarterbacks will separate themselves during the pre-draft process, and also disagree that an inside linebacker should be selected in the top five

I've never been a huge believer in Kiper but is this guy fucking serious?

well i dont know shit about NCAA players, but if BB has taught me anything about the draft, you take the best player or trade down, period.

Don't know much about this draft class, but if it was deciding between Barkley and Te'o I would go with Te'o. I'm sure someone will shoot up the draft boards come late March though it happens every year.

I am a firm believer in BPA or trading down, but KC needs a QB in the worst way. Whether or not they draft one in the first at #1, trade down for one, or use the pick to trade for one, they need it. Their team is actually not that bad except for that position. Filling it would go a long way right now, and for the future.

With the #1 pick, the goal is to alter the course of the franchise. It is nearly impossible for a MLB to alter the course of a franchise. QB's, pass rushers, and head coaches do. You can't draft a coach. So you're really left with two options, unless a really really special LT or RB is there.

Trade down with somebody who wants the QB, stockpile, and take your MLB or somebody else a few spots lower. Doesn't make a ton of sense to use the top pick for an ILB.

I agree completely with Warner. The #1 overall pick should be a player who changes a franchise, Think Peyton, Eli, Aikman, Elway and even Bruce Smith. I'm not a football expert like a lot of you guys think you are but Mario Williams was not worth #1 overall but thats not the point. I don't believe Te'o is the kind of player that will change everything about the Chiefs. He'll be overshadowed by Derrick Johnson anyway.

They pretty much have to go QB, either Barkley, Geno or maybe Tyler Wilson. If they really needed him they could take Jarvis Jones. I think he could change the tone of the defense sitting across from Tamba Hali but again i'm not so sure he would be worth a #1 OVR. My whole purpose of this rant is to say that the number one overall would be wasted if they drafted Te'o. At the least trade back.

You know the Ravens drafted a hall of fame left tackle with the 4th overall pick in that exact same draft, right? And that they took Peter Boulware and Jamie Sharper with their first two picks the next draft, right?

But you're right, drafting Ray Lewis totally changed the course of that franchise.

He said it is nearly impossible for a MLB to alter the course of a franchise. I was just hinting that Ray Lewis (with the help of Ozzie Newsome) altered the course of the Baltimore Ravens and only took 4 years to win a superbowl. Thus if he had been taken #1, he would have been the nearly.

Brings up a good question tho, If you knew what you know now. Keyshawn Johnson went #1, would you take Ray Lewis #1 instead? (Marvin Harrison and Eddie George were taken in that draft as well)
