35 out of 46 SB winning teams had HOF or future HOF QB's (I counted Brady, both Mannings, Warner, Rodgers, Rapelisberger, & Brees, I don't want to argue about any of them so feel free to knock any of them off if you wish, but i'd say they are all locks or close to locks aside from maybe Eli).

I count 11 MLB's (PackersX2, Chiefs, DolphinsX2, SteelersX4, Ravens, Giants), but that's just from glancing at the teams and going off my head, so I could be off by a few. The point is, by this extremely unscientific measure, it's not even close.

edit- make it 12, I forgot Singletary, but really we could quibble about Harry Carson who played in a 3-4, but I won't. ILB/MLB, same function and impact.

Let's see (I am typing as I research).

There are 26 players listed with the primary position of QB in the HOF. By my count, 22 either won a championship, or played for one.

There are 21 listed LB's. I'm not counting Chuck Noll. Not all of them are MLB's. Earlier I came up with 7 MLB's who won SB's, but one (Lewis) isn't a HOF'er yet. I'm not familiar with all of the pre merger guys like I am with the QB's. Some are simply listed as "LB". So I don't know. Maybe somebody can take the time to research it.

What we know for sure, is there are more QB's in the hall of fame than MLB's. I can't do the percentage of Hall of Famers at each position who won or played for titles until I somebody figures out which LB's were primarily MLB's. I can't do that at the moment, somebody needs to flash the senser signal, he may know off the top of his head when glancing at the list.

Too bad there is no such thing as a 100% lock HOFer in any draft, ever.

Barkley should and will be the number 1 pick.

Lot of you are letting this season fool you. If he came out last year he would have been the 3rd QB taken behind Luck and RG3 and rightfully so.

He will be a good pro. Most likely great. Maybe not HOF worthy, but he'll be a very good NFL starter for a long time.

So what positions are simply not #1 overall worthy ever?

I think I agree with Warner that you can't justify taking an MLB, but what about OLB in a 3-4? I think we'd mostly agree that a DE is worth a punt at #1 overall and surely a 3-4 OLB is their equivalent? I think you can take a DT too; if a man can disrupt the middle of the line in pass and rush situations he's definitely able to change the direction of a franchise. In the defensive backs category, a CB is too much of a pedestrian but what about Safety? I think if you're projecting a player to have HOF Safety potential you can take one there.

On offence, blindside Tackle, and QB are fine, interior linemen FB and TE are not. Is RB too deep and easy to "plug and play" now that you pass on a prospect like Adrian Peterson who doesn't have injury concerns? What about a WR? In my opinion, if you see a WR who fits the mould of physical freaks like Moss/Johnson/Fitzgerald then there's enough empirical evidence to say these guys can be franchise players in the modern NFL.

RB depends because you likely have just as many 2nd round and below guys doing good. Like someone said above, if a guy like AP is there, he's worthy but I wouldn't usually invest a #1 overall in a rb.

I agree with W2B, but the problem is that these days teams just take QBs who aren't HOF caliber and hope they turn into Manning or they think they're the Patriots and can develop someone into a Tom Brady. There really aren't any strong QB prospects this year, but that won't stop a team from taking one with the #1 overall pick and probably 3 QB's going in the first round.

This is why I say trade down. There aren't really any elite QBs coming out this year and the Chiefs have a pretty good set of MLBs in Belcher and Johnson. KC needs WRs, TEs, CBs and offensive lineman.

The issue with trading down is that you need a team who wants to trade up. Generally they only want to do that for elite QB prospects.

If a football god told me that this MLB was a 100% lock future hall of famer, and Barkley was at 25%, i'd take Barkley.

A hall of fame QB changes your team for a decade. You can be terrible every year with a hall of fame MLB.
