Fable
Platform: Xbox and PC
This is probably one of my favorite games to ever come out. Why is it at 39 though? What we were promised and what we got were two different games. I understand that it should have been higher on the list due to that but the story and the overall gameplay is what really made this game matter to me.
Fable is an action RPG and one of the finest to be made. You control “The Hero of Oakvale” as you complete quests to progress the main story as well as finish side quests at your own leisure. Just like in The Elder Scrolls, you don’t have to complete these side quests but it adds a lot of fun to the game and extends the play time. Most all the quests you go on are learned from the Hero’s guild, basically your central headquarters for the game and a very big part of the story. The main story quests have to be completed in a specific order while the side quests can be done at anytime before the final mission of the story. I won’t go really into the main story because of spoiler issues but they are very damn good and you can complete them as a good guy or a bad guy. After completing quests you will gain gold and renown. Gold can be used to buy certain weapons, armor, tattoos and much, much more. The renown is used to get the citizens of Albion to recognize you and at some points will aid you in battle. The renown in my opinion didn’t work as well as planned but it was a nice system to keep track of how important you were to the people of Albion.
The game’s RPG elements come into full fruition depending on how you approach a battle. You can use spells and that will give you experience depending on how much you used it. The same applies to using a sword or crossbow. Will is more of a general experience that all enemies give away and can go on to help unlock new spells, weapon uses ETC. Doing side quests such as recreation activities doesn’t gain you experience but instead gains you gold which is another RPG element I rather enjoyed. The gold you gained from this could also get you a house. In turn you could lease this house to the citizens for a price you see fit. If you raise the price way up you will be considered somewhat evil while lowering it way down would make you seem somewhat good. The choice is your’s. The beauty of making yourself good or evil came out in your characters appearance. If you were good your player would look almost angelic while being bad your character would take on a very demonic appearance. A very nice touch I hadn’t seen in a game before.
I’m going to roll Graphics, Sound and the setting of the game into one big hodgepodge of a paragraph here. Graphically the game was very nice for a late Xbox game although some of the characters and enemies looked bland and over used. All the balverines, bandits and hobbes looked basically the same. Maybe this was space cutting or cost cutting but it didn’t take away from the game too much. The Land of Albion actually looked beautiful. From a tall oak tree to the old school style of someone’s home looked great and gave the early Olde English vibe. Something a lot of games try to shoot for but fail. The Sound of the game is very British. I say that because they use a lot of dialogue that most British people would get. I occasionally got a chuckle out of myself but that was about it. But the sound of a sword clanking against and enemy, fire shooting from my hands and the sounds of my character walking on a dirt path sounded spot on and was one of the best parts of the game. Sound can go a long way in making a game immersive and Fable did this extremely well. The setting itself is amazing. I was fully engulfed in the world of Albion from the first time I set foot in Oakvale, my first look at the Hero’s Guild and the pure size of Bowerstone. Fable did a good job of making this world big and giving us lots to explore. There are plenty of places to go and people to meet and all the different towns are diverse so nothing feels stale.
I could honestly go on and on about Fable. Both my Dad and I are huge Fable fans and would talk about it for hours on end. Some people may have been turned off by it after the numerous promises Peter Molyneux gave us but please watch this video and judge for yourself.
