Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Platform: N64

A lot of you may question my decision to put this game at only number 37. I have an easy answer for that question; I didn’t enjoy this game as much as previous iterations of Zelda. Some may say this is the greatest Zelda game of all time but it’s not to me. I prefer a couple others to this game and you’ll find that out later.

Ocarina of Time came out in late 1998 and was critically acclaimed from everyone as far as reviewers and fans alike. It set all sorts of records for the N64 although it was the first Zelda game for the Nintendo 64. First off I will tell you what I didn’t like about it just to get that out of the way. I was always a fan of the top down perspective in a Zelda game. I had always wanted a 3-D version of it but when it actually came out I was kind of let down. Controlling Zelda in three dimensions with the stupid N64 controller really irritated me. Having to learn all new controls was bothersome as well. To be 100 percent honest, I really hated the story. Navi and the Deku Tree really killed the story for me. Some people may have been fans but listening to a stupid fairy who bothered me all the time drove me crazy. My favorite moment of the game is when the fucking tree died. I don’t mean to spoil that but seriously I hated him with a passion. I won’t go much more into the story but Gannondorf is just as evil as ever and there are a lot of really funny and heart wrenching scenes in the game that at least make up for the short comings. Gameplay was alright. Other than the whole control scheme really getting on my nerves I enjoyed the classic elements that were adapted from previous games. The sword, shield, boomerang and many more iconic weapons made their appearances and helped Link along the way. The world of Hyrule is huge and I really did enjoy the addition of Link’s horse, Epona. The addition of non playable characters make the game feel like a real world as well. The game had a lot of Dungeons as well but not too many as to make the game feel like it’s dragging on. A staple of the franchise returns as well. Link still has the ability to go on small sidequests to either temper a new sword or get items he wouldn’t regularly get through the story. Graphically the game looks dated today but back when it came out, it was one of the most beautiful games available. I downloaded it on my Wii and played it to it’s completion and it does look bad by today’s standards but it doesn’t take away from me enjoying the game. I never once said “that’s really ugly” or “ I can’t stand these graphics”. With the power they had back then, they pushed it to the limit. The sound is really enjoyable as well. For the first time we could here Link actually yell as her is swinging his sword. People talked as well through dialogue and sometimes they’d let out grunts that were somewhat comical. The only complaint I have about the sound is the fact that the classic Zelda theme was missing. Not a total game killer but destroys some of the nostalgia.

I’m sure a lot of you guys have this game a lot higher on your lists but I’m sorry. This game didn’t mean enough to me to garner a spot lower on my list. If you’ve never played it before you should watch the video below.

Great selection with KOTOR......I never had an original XBox, and this was the first game I picked up when I got a 360. The only complaint is that, like most other Star Wars games involving a lightsaber, it takes way too long to acquire it. Taris was a great first level, but way too long for not having a lightsaber.

Also, it was a great story line, for both games in the series. It didn't matter that there were no characters that people recognized, at least in my mind. KOTOR was it's own story, and set the stage for other games and stories later on.

Also, I think a huge reason why people are all over Ocarina of Time is because it was the first Zelda released in 3D. Huge factor for that era of gaming.

Super Mario 64

Platform: N64

I’m categorizing this same as I did with Zelda Ocarina of Time. Although this game is considered to be one of the most revolutionary games of all time and to many the greatest, to me it is an amazing Mario game but can’t out do some of the other Mario titles. A sixteen year old game that can still stand the test of time.

Super Mario 64 came out as a launch title on the Nintendo 64 back in June of 1996 and is probably the best selling game on the console. It is the first real 3D game in the Mario series as well. Super Mario RPG is considered to be a 3D Mario game but Super Mario 64 is the first one in 100% 3D and played as such. Super Mario 64 takes place entirely in Princess Peaches Castle and they way to get to different levels is by jumping through paintings on the walls. Before you ever jump into a level you can explore the exteriror and interior of the castle while acclimating yourself to the controls of Mario and the camera. The whole goal of the game is to defeat Bowser numerous times and collect all 120 stars that are scattered throughout the levels and obtained in different ways. Some ways of obtaining them are harder than others. It extends the length of the game for anyone who hasn’t played it before but for people who have, not so much. I mean I got this game for my Wii and I blasted through it in a few days collecting all 120 stars. The game may be long and have plenty of levels to explore but the learning curve in this game is non existent. This is arguably one of the easiest Mario games ever. That really is my only gripe with the game to be perfectly honest. I may have had issues with the controls of Legend of Zelda but Super Mario 64 did use the N64 controller to it’s perfection. I may have never been a huge fan of the controller but Mario was and probably is the only game to use it properly maybe outside of Super Smash Bros. Graphically the game was drop dead gorgeous. Especially jumping from the SNES and what I was already used to on the Playstation. Although the colors were blander than the Playstation, Mario never looked so good. Sound was huge in this game. Hearing Mario talk in a game for the first time was amazing. It was like nothing we’d ever experienced in a Mario game before. I did say I only had one gripe with this game but where in the blue hell were Yoshi and Luigi. We got a full on game of playing with Yoshi in 2 games previous but not one chance to ride him in this game. Lame.

Sorry this is a lot shorter than it should be but I couldn’t elaborate on much that most of you didn’t already know. If you haven’t played this game before, I suggest you crawl out of the rock you’ve been under for the past two decades and watch the video below.

I know that it isn't a popular opinion, I just have yet to enjoy a 3D Zelda outside of Darksiders. A Link to the Past is still my favorite. I have never played Majora's Mask though and the premise sounds awesome and unique (unlike most Zelda premises and stories).

Oh man...I haaaated Twilight Princess. Maybe the most boring game I've played in a LONG time. I would like to give Skyward Sword a go, but from what I read and hear it's even worse than Twilight Princess in terms of slow starts.

It does start slowly, but I got over it pretty quickly.

Skyward Sword is the best Wii game ever made. The reason why it had a slower start than it others is because it is an origin story and they actually built up Link/Zelda's relationship.

My thoughts on OOT are completely opposite of what Leftwich wrote. I prefer the 3D Zedlas over the 2D ones. IMO the entire game was a masterpiece. The sound, music, graphics, controls all blew me away. Don't really understand the thoughts on the Great Deku tree. He was a very small part at the beginning of a huge game. I also thought the Z-Targeting was a game changer. Once you heard that music in a Stalfos encounter and you hit "Z" it was just a great feeling because it was the first game I had experienced battles like that.
