Legend of Zelda
Platform: NES
Where do I begin with this game? This is one of my favorite franchises of all time and I’m one of the few who will not call this an action RPG. The only thing that is slightly RPG about it is the top down view. I would consider the second one more of an RPG, which unfortunately did not make my list due to the overwhelming difficulty which made me break my NES when I was 6. This game started a craze and is one of the milestones of gaming. If you haven’t played it, you’re obviously an idiot.
Couldn't think of a better picture to use first.
First and foremost I want to tell you guys the man who designed this game, Shigeru Miyamoto. To some of you that name means nothing but to the older gamers, he is a legend. The guy created Mario, Donkey Kong and Zelda. Those are three legendary franchises and just go to show you, back in the day, this guy could do no wrong. The Legend of Zelda is about a land named Hyrule. This Kingdom sees chaos and destruction led by the prince of darkness, Gannon. No not Gannondorf but a big fat asshole pig, the only way I wish to remember him. Gannon invades Hyrule in an attempt to capture the Triforce. The Triforce is a triangle made up of three triangles, lol, that grants you great power. No this great power does not bestow great responsibility. The three triangles that make up the triforce represent Power, Wisdom and Courage and when united is the only time the true power is unleashed. Gannon wants this triforce because he’s evil, duh, and wants to take over the world. Luckily fate has other intentions. Before Princess Zelda is captured she breaks it up into eight pieces that are scattered throughout eight dungeons. Ok let me get this off my chest and if you read this please respond: Why didn’t all eight monsters come together and reunite the triforce before Link comes and kicks their teeth in? Once Zelda is captured some old bitch named Impa is sent out to find someone to save the kingdom but before she can do that she is surrounded by monsters. Luckily for this hag, Link is there to rescue her. Impa tells Link he needs to save Zelda and his epic journey begins there.
The Legend of Zelda is a somewhat large game at least by NES standards. Sure if you wanted to today you could beat this game in a few hours but back in 1986 this game was the biggest people had ever seen. As I said earlier you make your way through 8 dungeons, some hidden and some in plain view. Also as I said before, this game has a top down view that works very well although sometimes when Link swings his sword it looks like a black man’s wiener. The main world has lots of caves to explore, people to talk to, things to buy and enemies to murder as well as hidden secrets like heart containers and more magic stuff. The dungeons themselves are the real fun. They are maze like and have lots of different enemies and bosses. As well as having enemies and bosses they are full of secret doors, keys, maps and items needed to progress in the game like a ladder, flute and boomerang. The first few dungeons are easy and should be no problem even for a beginning gamer but as the game goes on and you get in some of the later dungeons it gets a lot harder. Some of the bosses in this game are a real thorn in your side and can cause massive bouts of rage. After you have beat all 8 dungeons you will unlock the 9th one. The ninth dungeon is hidden well but any fan of Zelda knows where it is. In this final dungeon you get to face Gannon, after facing some very punishing enemies of course. Interestingly enough you don’t have to complete the dungeons in any pre set order. Sure a few you need the raft or ladder to reach it and you obtain those items in earlier dungeons but for the most part the way you complete the game is up to you. It’s recommended by me to complete it in order, it’s just easier that way.
I can’t complain about the sound in this game. Why? Because the Zelda theme is legendary and if I hear it I hum it. It’s one of those songs in gaming that will never be forgotten and it all started in this game. Sure some sounds are very archaic but what they were working with and what they accomplished is amazing. Graphically I can’t complain about this game either. It doesn’t have to look good because it plays so well. I’m not saying this game looks like a steaming pile of shit but compared to other games on the NES it isn’t the best but I wouldn’t change a thing about it. It’s simple graphics is what makes this game so nostalgic and captivating.
Look, some of you may not like this game and you’re retarded for that but it is one of the greatest games to ever be played and a legend among games. Watch this video and see for yourself.
