One thing you need to take notice, the Smoke Monster doesnt take the form of anyone who has been buried. Every single person he mimmicks was never buried. Jackss dad, Mr Eckos brother, Bens daughter, and John Locke. My dad and I think it cant take control of buried people.

I'm pretty sure I remember someone asking Ben where he was at some point, and him saying he was burying his daughter.

I think the Smoke Monster has to have seen or "processed" the person (either alive - like John or dead but an unburied corpse - like Jacks' Dad) before it can take it's form. Remember after Alex died, Ben summoned him to take out the mercenaries and Ben buried her after it had passed through so it would've seen her then.

So if you bury the corpse before it has had a chance to actually see the corpse and it never encountered the person while they were still alive I think Smokie won't be able to mimic it.

Based on next week's preview, I have a feeling that Sawyer will encounter Smokey out in the jungle in the form of Juliet at some point in the next few episodes.

Remember when they first got transported back to the 70's? Part of the Dharma people's truce with the Others was to bury the dead. The reason you listed is exactly why.

The smoke monster was Eko's brother on the island. that's why he told him, "You talk to me as if I'm your brother."

He isn't controlling them - he is just taking on their appearance - hence the reason we have Corpse Locke (the real Locke who's body is being rolled around the place) and Zombie Locke (who is really Smokie/Jacob's enemy)

Yup, Yemi's body was never buried, just spent 10 years or however long it was stuck in that plane that was stuck in the cliff, hence Smokie being able to use his form.

Anyone notice how they screwed up the wheel chairs in the season premiere. When they load John Locke into a wheel chair after the plane lands it's one of those new fancy types airport use. The ones hat are push only. When he's talking to Jack in the baggage area he's in the old style one. The new style wasn't around in the year 2004! Is this an easter egg or screw up!

Whatever is different on the new Oceanic 815 is likely meant that way. Something changed (which is why Michael, Walt, Shannon and perhaps others) were not there just like why Jack is a nervous ass, why Charlie tried to kill himself, etc.

Does anyone remember when Walt was taken by the Others?....and later in an earlier season when Walt suddenly appeared to Shannon in the jungle, warning her about the others coming? He was all wet! Later Walt also appeared to Locke after he was shot by Ben. The only explainatio we currently have for this is that the Smoke Monster was behind this. So, if the theory is that the smoke monster only can take the form of those that were dead on the island how does this explain Walt just popping up at random to warn people? Strange.

I guess the only explanation is it was just a vision. B/c the only times we think we have seen smoke as someone was dead people.
