Martz: You can’t argue against Brees as NFL’s best

He had Marty as HC, a fairly decent defense , and one of the best running games in the NFL.

He had the games best RB , A blitzing top defense , arguably best TE in the game.
Really no excuse to be throwing INTs or blowing games late.

Drew Brees is a top 10 quarterback. He isn't going to be top 5 until he can make his teammates around him better. He isn't a leader at all.

Obviously I disagree with Martz, as does 99% of anyone who watches the NFL.

I'm not even sure you'd find many Saints fans who think he's the best QB in the league.

sidenote-I wonder if Martz saw the Pats game Sunday night. Brees never does that. Or wins 3 SB's.

Exactly.

People salways say he "has no weapons", when with the Saints he's pretty good skill guys (Bush, Colston, Shockey. Duece, Thomas, etc), and with SD he had LT who is going to the HOF, Antonio Gates who is no worse than the 2nd or 3rd best TE of his era, and a defense that was always very good.

Hes not Donovan McNabb, who aside from Westbrook, and TO for like 20 games, has played with the likes of James Trash and Todd Stinkston for a good portion of his career.

If he throws 7 ints in 3 games at the end of the season while trying to make it into the playoffs, then he's not anywhere near the best.

Very good QB, but he can't make those mistakes and be considered the best or one of the best, no matter how much some people want to blame coaches and defense for the ints.

Martz apparently says Brees is the best. Fine. I (and pretty much everyone else) disagree. I find it impossible, and pretty much ridiculous, to even build a case Brees is better than Brady or Manning (for starters).

Its a combination of both. Personally, I think you need a combination of regular season and post season success. That would mean putting up great numbers in the regular season, but also performing when it matters in the post season and even in close regular season games. Using this, I would say that Tom Brady is the best in the league.

Thats why I hate the Dilfer argument. To me, Superbowl Rings are very important in judging a quarterback. But having a Superbowl Ring does not automatically make you better than anyone who hasn't won one. Obviously Dan Marino is an all time top 10 quarterback. I do think Brees is a top 5 quarterback, 5th to be exact, but just because he puts up big time numbers in the regular season doesn't make him the best.

Statistics are very nice, but playoff wins and Superbowls are more important.
