I read Spencer yesterday saying how MS was going after "quality, not quantity" with its IPs in 2012.

That's fine and all, but when your only two IPs guaranteed to hit in 2012 are Halo and Fable, I'm not sure "quality" is a word you can use. Halo will be Halo and Fable will be Fable, neither of which is an accomplishment at this point.

That's not really my issue. Halo has been the same, really, since the first one which came out ten years ago.

Uncharted may be the same now as it has always been, but at least that's only five years ago.

I guess what I'm saying is at this point neither company is while Sony is definitely winning at this point neither company is wowing me by any means with their exclusive IP productions.

Sony struck gold with Infamous, Uncharted, LBP, and Resistance as original and exclusive IPs several years ago but in the recent past neither company has seemingly done squat.

I won't argue that Halo has not changed drastically by any means, but to be fair Sony has released numerous HD collections of PSP and PS2 ports at this point.

Even without the HD remakes Sony still put out quite a few exclusives last year. MS put out what Gears and Halo Anniversary(Which if I don't count Sony's remakes then I shouldn't count this)

Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted are the only exclusives Sony needs and I will buy their next systems. If not for everyone in the world having a 360 so I picked one up to play with them, I would definitely only get a Sony product.

That's a fair point. Besides some PSN games (Dead Nation for one) and DC Universe it's hard to think of any new IP's within the past year or so. But their exclusives are so strong that they can keep iterating on them and people will still be happy for quite some time.

I couldn't disagree more. Exclusives are what drives someone to buying and ultimately keeping a system. If MS doesn't step up their game what point will there be to own a MS console next generation? If you could only buy one why wouldn't it be a Sony console? You get all the third party games and way more exclusives. MS only has Halo, Fable, Gears and Forza right now, although they are all strong IP's. Halo, while I think it will sell quite well obviously, I think has faltered significantly. I don't know a single person that still plays Reach consistently. Whereas people played Halo 2 and 3 until their hands bled. Fable 3 was apparently a HUGE disappointment and the Kinect game looks absolutely atrocious. Forza is Forza. Gears is the only exclusive that seems to get better with each game and who knows what is going to happen with that series considering the trilogy is "over".

Sony does have Starhawk in the immediate future, although I know it's technically iterating on Warhawk but it seems to be completely unrecognizable from that game. Plus I Am Alive is coming down the pipe.

Exactly Med. Of course if you can afford all the consoles the point is moot. It's easy to say "I own all the consoles, who gives a fuck?" But you and I and a lot of people on a gaming site like this are in the minority. Most average joes have one game console because that's all the time they have for gaming and also all they can afford. But more and more people these days can only afford one. So moving into the next generation especially, assuming they release around the same time, it would be a no brainer to choose the console that has a much bigger stable and variety of games.

I also wholeheartedly agree about Halo. When Reach came out people played it for a few weeks and that was it. Sure there are still hardcore players but you have that with any game. It was crazy how quickly everyone on my friends list, including me, stopped playing Reach. Hell, I haven't even finished the campaign. As for Anniversary, I'm curious how many copies it sold because I only know of two people here that actually bought it, with me being one of them. I'm guessing it didn't sell well because otherwise MS would be tooting their own horn on every media outlet imaginable. It didn't help that it was at least $10 too much.

You are both right, but you both are missing my point. Why do I care about what other consumers want? I am exactly in the "I own both, so who gives a fuck?" mindset because I don't care about Joe Shmo and what he can and can't get, because neither affects what I can and can't get. Why would one consumer care about what another chooses? It's a silly discussion unless you work for the manufacturer, or you live in some parallel universe where you're only ever legally allowed to buy 1 console. It just starts fanboy arguments on the consumer because it starts to get down to those stupid feelings of jealousy or needing to feel justified in your one console purchase. So yeah, silly to me, unless you work for the manufacturer of the product and such exclusivity could detemine how much money you make.

EDIT - and as far as Halo is concerned, I think that this is what happens when a developer iterates too much. The response becomes more tepid because despite how well polished and fine-tuned everything is, it's just more of the same at the same time. I think that if Gears goes on, or Uncharted or even to a degree games like Batman, etc...they run the risk of the same thing happening. The reason series like GTA and Final Fantasy last so long is because they make pretty huge changes in their sequels, yet remain similar at their core. I would say a lot of games with sequels (like the ones I mentioned) run the risk of becoming like Halo just because it's more of the same with no real improvements other than polish. That's why I'm hoping both big console makes push for some new IPs regardless of exclusivity in the next gen.
