Not that anyone gives a rats ass about Nintendo, but...

Nintendo is getting a jump on E3 by holding a surprise Nintendo Direct Conference Sunday afternoon.

The Nintendo Direct stream will be here at 3 PM Pacific Time, and Nintendo is promising new information about the Wii U. Nintendo's official E3 conference will be held Tuesday at 9 AM Pacific Time. I'm guessing the event will only last as long as it takes for Saturo Iwata to come on and say, "first," and then sign off.

Here's a picture of Nintendo's decision makers getting excited for E3 that just posted to Nintendo's Facebook page. I'd like to think that Shigeru Miyamoto and Reggie Fils-Aime are shaking hands, and Iwata was suddenly overcome with jealousy and tried to get involved in the handshake as awkwardly as possible.

Alan Wake 2 being announced tomorrow???

Remedy Entertainment creative director Sam Lake's cryptic new tweet strongly hints that Alan Wake 2 is not only happening, but that an announcement might be imminent -- perhaps coming at E3 this week.

The tweet reads, "It's all true. 'It will happen again, in another town, a town called Ordinary.' It's happening now." This alone is a strong indicator of another Alan Wake adventure, but that's not the only evidence in play. The tweet ends with a link to a blog by "Samantha" (a possible thinly veiled cover for Sam Lake himself) that includes numerous images of poem pages that are in both the visual and literary style of Wake. Images like this one:

This sounds a lot like the end of the original Alan Wake, doesn't it?

We see three possibilities here: 1) It's Alan Wake 2 for Xbox 360. 2) It's another episodic Xbox Live Arcade outing, similar to Alan Wake's American Nightmare. Or 3) Microsoft will close their press conference with a teaser for a next-gen Alan Wake 2 without expressly describing it that way, perhaps saying, "And before we go, here's a taste of what you can expect to see from the future of Xbox starting next year..."

Wii U's "GamePad" Revealed

Next, support for near-field communication is confirmed. As hinted at in Ubisoft's Rayman Legends trailer – which leaked to the Internet earlier this year – the controller will be able to interact with objects placed on its surface to activate a variety of in-game effects. (The square marking on the left side of the controller's surface indicates the placement spot, as many had guessed. Nintendo was quiet on specific examples of NFC, but that's probably just because the company doesn't want to reveal its software line-up until the Tuesday morning press event.

The other mysterious square, placed under the lower-right corner of the screen and sandwiched between the Power button and Battery light? That's the TV Control button – which, again, is exactly what many people guessed it would be based on the leaked image. Pressing it will control the action of having your TV screen's image jump to the handheld screen for portable play, and vice versa. You can also use the GamePad as a remote control for your normal television viewing.

The analog control sticks are longer, now confirmed to be replacing the shorter, 3DS-style slider pads that the controller originally had in place when revealed at last year's E3. A new detail, though, is that the sticks are now clickable -- an extra button's hidden underneath each one.

The GamePad will also include gyro and motion sensors to pick up player movements.

Nintendo Shows Off Wii U Pro Controller

Nintendo revealed during today's Nintendo Direct conference that Wii U will support a new controller separate from the Wii U GamePad. You can see this new controller below:

The Miiverse is a "Mii universe" that is the system's redesigned networking and designed Mii Plaza.

Miiverse the new network service where Miis from around the world can meet. The redesigned Wii Plaza shows Mii clustered around various Wii U titles. This shows what games players are enjoying and what's popular.

Even when the game isn't designed for online or even if the game's are not online, the Miiverse can still connect consoles and players. Think of it as a social networking system for the Wii U, the 3DS, and even your mobile device or PC.

Nintendo’s Wii U Has a Proper Online Community

Here's a pleasant surprise: the Wii U looks like it's going to have a proper online community built into the console. In a video shown during a pre-E3 conference, a user on the console jumps onto the controller and consults a GameFAQs-like service, while at the same his friend is monitoring Tweet-like messages on his phone.

That latter part is especially nice, given Nintendo's previous reluctance to branching its services out onto other platforms.

Also displayed was a video calling service similar to Skype.

Nintendo also showed off the ability for users to share screenshots, share user-created content and chat as Miis.

Microsoft Wants to Stream Console Games to Phones, Turning Handhelds Into “Xbox Live

Kotaku has learned from a reliable source that, either at E3 or in the very near future, Microsoft plans to unveil a new feature known as Xbox Live Companion. Not to be confused with its social and marketplace app Xbox Companion, Xbox Live Companion is a system where developers of Xbox 360 console games can stream content directly to a mobile phone or tablet.
This source tells us the feature was internally known as Smart Glass, lending some credibility to rumours last week of an ability to stream content from your console to a phone or tablet. From what our source tells us, though, it appears Microsoft's ambitions for such a feature are a little more focused on games.

Xbox Live Companion would work like this: owners of iOS, Android or Windows phones (or tablets) download the Xbox Live Companion application to their devices. Then, developers of console games will have the option of coding in features that would allow those games to send content to the app while the game was running, transforming it into a personalised "companion" of the title being played.

An example we heard from this source was Halo 4: start playing the game on Xbox 360 and, if you've got XBLC on your phone or tablet, it will become a Halo 4 companion application. Turn the game off and switch to something else that the app supports and it suddenly becomes your companion for that game.

The reason for this "skinning" is the variety of platforms, requirements and resolutions there are spread across phones and tablets. Rather than ask individual developers to come up with their own Android, iPhone, iPad and Windows Phone versions of each "companion", Microsoft's app will be cross-compatible with all of them; game developers need only write their code for the Xbox Live Companion App and Microsoft will take it from there.

So what would these companion apps actually do? Because it's tapping into the same servers your account and games are running on, it can bring up things like maps and status screens for the game you're playing. Basically, then, a contemporary version of what Nintendo once hoped it would be able to achieve between the GameCube and GameBoy. Or what it's doing now with the Wii U. Or what Sony has been dabbling in with its consoles and handhelds.

The key difference here, though, is that almost all of its consumers already own one of the necessary handheld devices needed to take advantage of the service.

We've heard from our source that all Xbox Live users will be able to access these basic features. Gold subscribers, meanwhile, will get access to more advanced content. Examples of more exclusive features include in-game inventory management or access to stuff like hacking minigames, along with content streamed directly from the game to your phone/tablet, like additional video playback or a racing game's rearview mirror (though apparently the latter two are examples of features that may not make the app's launch).

This, however, is just the start. Microsoft hopes to, once the basics of the application are up and running, use Xbox Live Companion to let you stream further content or even, where supported, entire Xbox games directly from your console to a compatible device, much like streaming service OnLive already allows.

While there will be some Xbox 360 games that work with the application, given the long-term nature of Microsoft's plans it will also obviously be a part of the company's next console, code-named Durango.

We don't know when the application will be launching, nor whether it will be free or not. Hopefully Microsoft's E3 press conference this week will give us a little more information!
