Xbox One Performance Could Become More Powerful Without Kinect

Microsoft has confirmed it's talking with publishers about boosting Xbox One's graphical performance, following yesterday's news that the console will now be sold without Kinect.

Company exec Yusuf Mehdi told Polygon that discussions are ongoing about how to make it easier for developers to get more power out of the console, presumably in a bid to help it hit 1080p resolution on multiplatform titles.

"We are in discussions with our game publishers about what we might do in this space and we will have more to talk about soon," he said.

Digital Foundry has highlighted in the past that 10 percent of the Xbox One's graphic resources are ring-fenced for Kinect and apps. With the news that Kinect is now to become wholly optional for Xbox One owners, it seems the company wants to take this portion of the GPU previously focused on looking for voice commands and gestures and redistribute it elsewhere.

Microsoft's Andrew Goossen previously told the site plans were afoot for such a move, saying "In the future, we plan to open up more options to developers to access this GPU reservation time while maintaining full system functionality."

Since the Xbox One and PS4 launched last November, we've frequently seen PS4 versions of multiplatform games achieve higher resolutions and framerates than their Xbox counterparts, with Watch Dogs and The Witcher 3 being among the latest titles to be affected. Seeing as Microsoft's policy changes yesterday have tried to close the gap with Sony in all other areas, it makes sense the company will try to do the same on this front as soon as possible.

That is interesting...what does that mean exactly? When I play game X that uses 100% of the X1's GPU will the Kinect be disabled?

While I like the fact that MS is changing their course and doing it so quickly to bring us a platform that is more conducive to hardcore gamers...what the hell were they thinking 12 months ago? Basically they are just following the path that Sony has paved this gen.

It's seems as if in the future we are going to have 2 boxes that are essentially the same. The only difference will be the handful of exclusives and the controller.

Exactly. He can't be held liable for the mistakes his predecessors made prior to his being in control. I am interested to see how much additional GPU power can be leveraged by not focusing so much on the Kinect's integration into the game play environment.

They're getting bashed because people said the mandatory Kinect bundle was a mistake before the system even launched, but MS went through with it anyway.

This isn't so much bashing the decision to drop the Kinect as it is an "I told you so" moment for all of us who saw this coming a year ago.

From my eyes:

- He asks how PS4 is more powerful.

- In response console specs and common game framerates and resolutions are posted to answer his question.

- He then goes on to say well with all of that being true then how come I can't visually see how much more powerful it is when I see both.

I don't care if you think or don't think it looks different. They look the same, they don't - whatever. You asked how the PS4 was more powerful and jms and Bregz answered it objectively but thats not good enough.

to be fair to NF, the KZ MP was supposed to be 1080p and fooled people for four months before someone actually tested it and found out it wasnt... that really does go to show you resolution means dick and most people cant tell the difference b/t anything above 720p...

Just because YOU PERSONALLY can't tell the difference between the two consoles on two game titles doesn't change the fact that the PS4 hardware appears to be superior.

I don't really care and was going to buy a PS either way, but your question has been answered, and you're still raving like you made some point that we're all ignoring because we love Sony so much.

If anyone here is missing the point it's you for thinking we're killing MS for making this decision, when it's what a good number of us said they should have done before launch. :yao:

I knew the PS4 had better specs before even asking. I'm sorry it was jms that was the original target because I've never had an issue with him at all. The point was with those better specs, have we yet to see a better end result if a video game? With such a insignifcant difference, y'all bring it up all the time.

Because you guys like to argue like there is really a major difference between these plastic bricks.

I don't have any issues with the XBONE as a product. I have issues with the way they rolled out the console, and the hubris behind some of the decisions they made.

I agree with this sentiment unless you have a flatscreen HD TV thats 50+ inches. Bigger the TV bigger the difference. All in all the difference is insignificant.

Thats not how you framed your question originally though and when people actually answered your question objectively you did nothing but act like a prick towards them.

Why would I come in this thread and not think this is good news? People wanted a kinect less XB1, they are giving it to them. Yet they get bashed for it. They got bashed for not doing it. Y'all don't give up.

Aso along with Atlas already said why people have a problem with it.
