Giants Only Get Two Runs, But That's Enough Against The Rockies

Game Story
Unlike yesterday's game in which the Giants won 7 to 1, today's game was a close game down to the wire. Both starters, Tim Linecum and Jeff Francis, pitched well. Only thing is that Tim Lincecum pitched a tad bit better. Both Lincecum and Francis pitched 6 innings and allowed 3 hits. The Giants were able to get 2 runs off of Francis, while the Rockies were only able to get 1 run off of Lincecum.

The Giants got a run in the 5th inning. Eugenio Velez led off the 5th inning with a single. He stole second base and then a Pablo Sandoval groundout moved Velez to third base. Travis Ishikawa then took the plate and he grounded out, but that groundout was able to score Velez. The Giants were able to get another run in the 6th inning. Tim Lincecum struck out to start off the inning, but then Randy Winn and Edgar Renteria walked. Aaron Rowand struck out making it 2 men on with 2 outs. Then, Delmon Young singled to center, but it wasn't hit far enough to score Randy Winn from 2nd base. Eugenio Velez took the plate and he smacked a pitch into center which scored Randy Winn from third. Despite having the bases loaded, Jeff Francis was able to get out of the inning without any further damage being done as Pablo Sandoval flied out. The Rockies took the plate in the bottom of the 6th and the second batter, Todd Helton, hit an easy homer off of Tim Lincecum. Lincecum threw Helton a two-seam fastball but he missed his spot and Helton belted his 13th homer of the season. Neither team was able to get any more runs, as Brian Wilson got two strikeouts in the 9th inning to get his 20th save of the season.

Rockies 1-Hit Giants In Today's Game

Game Story
The Giants were looking to get the victory today against the Rockies, which would complete the 3-game sweep; the Giants were unable to do that. The Rockies pitching held the Giants to only 1 hit on the game. That lone hit was a home run by Dallas McPherson in the 6th inning that finally put a 1 on the run and hit column for the Giants.

Aaron Cook was absolutely on today. He only struck out one guy, but he was very quick in getting his batters out. When he left the game after the 7th inning, his pitch count only reached 40 pitches. His sinker was dominant today and he was able to get his ERA down to 3.47. On the other side of the mound, for the Giants, was Jonathan Sanchez. Sanchez made his first start today after being in the bullpen after suffering a toe injury earlier in the season. Sanchez did not pitch bad at all. He went 6 innings, while allowing 6 hits and 2 runs. One of those runs was a Troy Tulowitzki bomb in the 4th inning; that was Tulowitzki's team-leading 18th homer. Hawpe, then, doubled home Troy Tulowitzki in the 6th inning, which put the Rockies on top 2 to 1. That's the score that the Rockies won by, as Huston Street picked up his 16th save of the season.

Game Story
The Oakland A's traveled to San Francisco in this interleague matchup. The Giants got their offense started quickly as they got two runs in the first two innings against Orlando Hernandez. Pablo Sandoval singled home Delmon Young, who got to third on a fielder's choice by Aaron Rowand. In the 2nd inning, Jesus Guzman hit a double for the Giants; then, Matt Cain hit a ball and Jason Giambi threw it to third and it went past Nomar Garciaparra as Jesus Guzman easily scored. That was the only runs for the Giants until the 7th inning.

Meanwhile, Matt Cain was absolutely nasty for the Giants, but that's been the story for the entire season for Cain. He came in undefeated so far in the season while leading the league in wins with 12. Cain pitched a gem until he was taken out after the 7th inning. He pitched 7 scoreless innings while allowing just 3 hits and striking out 9 batters. In the 7th inning, the Giants scored 4 runs. Travis Ishikawa and Edgar Renteria both singled to start off the inning. Then, Jesus Guzman reached base on Jason Giambi's 2nd throwing error of the game. Eugenio Velez singled and that allowed Edgar Renteria to score. The A's took out Hernandez and put in Mazzaro. Mazzaro loaded up the bases, but only allowed 1 run and was able to get out of the inning without any further damage being done. The Giants were able to tack on two more runs in the bottom of the 8th inning with 5 singles. Osiris Matos finished off the game as he struck out 2 of the batters he faced in the 9th inning.
