Cain Comes Back To Throw 1-Hitter Against Indians

Game Story
Last start, Matt Cain allowed a season-high 5 earned runs against the Detroit Tigers. This game was a totally different story. He didn't allow a run at all; that's not even the amazing part. He only allowed one hit in the entire game! Cain had a grand performance against the Indians, as he went the distance, while allowing one hit, which was a measly grounder up the middle that went for a hit. Cain also struck out 10 batters.

Cain got a lot of run support early, as the Giants were facing an inexperienced Indians starter in Scott Lewis. The Giants offense was anxious to put a pounding on the Indians today after yesterday's walk-off loss. Lewis merely lasted 2 2/3 innings while allowing 7 runs off of 8 hits. Cain was able to take those 7 runs which came in the first three innings and used them to his advantage, as he was comfortable all night with his fastball and curveball. He was able to strike out many batters with his fastball today, which is something different. Throughout the entire season, his main strikeout pitch has been his curveball, but the velocity on his fastball reached up to 97 MPH. The Giants were able to come away with a nice victory against the Indians.

McPherson's 3 RBI's Allow Giants To Win Close

Game Story
Billy Sadler and Jake Westbrook took the mound in this rubber matchup of the Giants and the Indians. Neither pitched all that efficiently, as Sadler allowed 4 earned runs and Westbrook allowed 5.

The big hit for the Giants came in the 5th inning, which was a Dallas McPherson homer off of Westbrook. Jhonny Peralta and Randy Winn were both also able to homer, but their homers came up a tad bit short, as the Giants went on to win the game by a slim margin of 5 to 4.

Baseball Tonight: Breaking Down The Giants, Jays, Indians Trade
presented by John Kruk and Steve Phillips

John: Welcome to tonight's episode of Baseball Tonight, where Steve Phillips and I will be breaking down a deal that went down a few days ago that involved the San Francisco Giants, Toronto Blue Jays, and the Cleveland Indians.

Steve: We sure will, John. So, first of all, there were quite a bit of players involved. 6 in total, to be exact. The San Francisco Giants shipped Bengie Molina to the Blue Jays, while they traded Randy Winn to the Indians. The Blue Jays traded T.J. Beam to the Cleveland Indians and Bryan Bullington to the San Francisco Giants. The Cleveland Indians traded Andy Marte to the Giants, while they traded Kirk Saarloos to the Blue Jays.

John: This truly was a quite interesting deal for the Giants. They traded away two aging veterans to teams that, as of now, aren't even in competition for the playoffs. So, we must ask why exactly did they do this? I was able to speak to Giants General Manager Brian Sabean. He told me that Molina wanted out, which was a given, as Molina issued an ultimatum to be traded. Sabean also said that Winn was struggling and his poor performance was taking a toll on the overall offensive production.

Steve: Sabean took a chance with two guys who were highly touted prospects. Sabean sees that Andy Marte could become a legitimate hitter in the future if only he learns discipline at the plate. Sabean also thinks that Bullington could become a key player for the Giants in their bullpen, as he was doing pretty well for the Jays AA team.

John: The Indians and Blue Jays took advantage of the Giants wanting players that weren't particularly hard to give up. Andy Marte was stuck behind Mark DeRosa at third and probably wasn't going to be starting any time soon. Bullington was in AA and wasn't going to get to the majors for the Blue Jays. The Indians received a speedy guy, who can hit really well in Randy Winn. They also received a decent reliever in T.J. Beam.

Steve: The Blue Jays were able to get Bengie Molina, who will be starting over struggling Rod Barajas. Molina has said that his age is getting up there, but he still has some left in his tank. The Jays also received Kirk Saarloos, who was a reliable pitcher for the A's in 2006, but lost his way with the Reds in 2007 and has been journeying in the minors for a little while looking for a chance to get back to the major leagues.

John: Yes. I believe that this 3-team trade was better for the Blue Jays and the Indians than the Giants. I don't think Marte and Bullington will ever amount to the players that they were expected to be. I just think that the Giants gave up too much for Marte and Bullington, but only time can tell. Game Story
The Giants faced Oakland, again, and had a chip on their shoulder. They lost the last series against the A's and they wanted to win this one. They certainly started off the series very nicely with a 5-3 victory against the A's.

Barry Zito and Trevor Cahill were on the mound for their respective teams. Zito only lasted 6 1/3 innings while allowing 3 runs, but only 1 was earned; Cahill went 7 innings while allowing 5 earned runs on 16 hits. The straight dagger came in the 5th inning where Dallas McPherson hit a line-drive 3-run homer into the right-field stands. McPherson finished the game with 4 RBI's and led the Giants to a victory.

Game Story
This was the 9th time this season that the San Francisco Giants went into extra innings. Coming into the game, the Giants were an even 5-5 in extra innings. After the game, though, they became 5-6 in extras after a tough loss against the A's in 12 innings. Both teams fought it out very hard as only a total of 3 runs were scored in the game. Both pitching was phenomenal as well. Giants starter Tim Lincecum pitched extremely efficiently, as he went 8 innings while 1 run, which wasn't earned on 5 hits. He also struck out 13 batters. On the opposing side, Brett Anderson went 7 innings while allowing just 1 earned run on 5 hits.

Both teams' bullpens held up well, also, but the Giants bullpen faltered in the end. The Giants brought in Merkin Valdez in the bottom of the 12th inning. He gave up three straight singles to Jason Giambi, Eric Chavez, and Nomar Garciaparra. Chris Denorfia took the plate with the bases loaded and no outs. Denorfia delivered in the clutch. He hit a line-drive over the head of Eddy Martinez-Estev for a double, which allowed Jason Giambi to score from 3rd. The A's won this one in dramatic fashion.
