AL East Division Preview:

First Place: New YorkYankees

baseball_newYorkYankees.gif

We all know that 2008 was a disappointing season for the New York Yankees. They're streak of 13 straight postseason appearances was snapped. Plain and simple they're only goal every season is to win the World Series, and you can't do that if you don't make the playoffs. With the emergence of the Rays and the always competitive Red Sox not going anywhere, the Yankees knew they had to be proactive this offseason if they were going to get back on top of the AL East. So they did the only logical thing and signed the best free agent pitcher in C.C Sabathia, and the best free agent hitter in Mark Teixeira. Oh, don't forget about the addition of A.J. Burnett either.

Those three combined for a 20.3 WAR last season, replacing Jason Giambi, Mike Mussina and Pitcher X. Teixeira also brings Gold Glove caliber defense to a Yankee team that's been severely lacking in that department. Tex posted an 11.7 UZR and a 10.1 UZR/150 last season while Giambi put up -1.8 and -2.5. Their defense up the middle leaves much to be desired. Jeter, who should be moved from shortstop as soon as possible, hasn't put up a positive UZR since 2002 and Cano had a -7.3 UZR at second last season. The only saving grace is Brett Gardner and/or Melky Cabrera should man centerfield in 2009, and both play excellent defense. The outfield is a bit of a log jam with the above mentioned Gardner and Cabrera joining Johnny Damon, Xavier Nady and Nick Swisher, but that's a good problem to have.

Their rotation wasn't bad last season, posting a 4.05 FIP without Wang for a large majority of the year, and they went out and added two starters with FIP's of 2.91 and 3.45. The bullpen is going to be good again; it had a FIP of 3.82 last season which was second in all of baseball to the Dodgers.

The Yankees didn't go out and spend their money unwisely. They had specific issues that needed to be addressed and they smartly did just that, while actually lowering their payroll from last season. Baseball is better when the Yankees are good, and they've thrown their hat right back into the American League East race.

Player to Watch: P C.C. Sabathia
Player on the Rise: CF Brett Gardner
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Second Place: Boston Red Sox
baseball_bostonRedSox.gif

Last year, the Boston Red Sox had the Tampa Bay Rays right where they wanted them, in a Game Seven after a deflating Game Six loss at home in the American League Championship Series. But the Rays found a way to swim out of the trap, and the Sox were denied a
trip to their third World Series in five years.Boston dealt with injuries, saw new stars rise and fixtures depart from the rotation and lineup. Can they overcome it all again in the menacing AL East?

Dustin Pedroia had the kind of season the Most Valuable Player Award is all about. While the numbers weren't exactly Pujols-like (.326, 17 homers, 83 RBI), without the scrappy, sparkplug second baseman, the loss of DH David Ortiz may well have sunk the Sox.Ortiz (.264, 23, 89) is back, as is MVP candidate 1B Kevin Youkilis (.312, 29, 115) and LF Jason Bay (.286, 31, 101) will get his first full season in front of the Monster.
A few provisos to this group, though: 3B Mike Lowell is coming off hip surgery, RF J.D. Drew is already dealing with back issues, C Jason Varitek is no longer a threat at the dish, and if anyone goes down, there's very little on the bench to back them up.
Fenway Park may be the big top, and the offense the highwire act.

This group also comes with a few catches, though not as potentially serious as the offense. Josh Beckett (12-10, 4.03 ERA) looked mortal in last year's postseason, and will need to bounce back from arm, back, and oblique problems. Tim Wakefield (10-11, 4.13) knuckles his way back into the rotation (at least temporarily) but how much does he have left? And Brad Penny and his hurting shoulder, coming off a less than stellar 2008, is slated in the five hole.
Now, yes, John Smoltz is waiting in the wings, and Clay Buchholz most assuredly will do better this year (2-9, 6.75), but, again, if injuries show their scabrous head, Boston could have a few issues with all but All-Stars Jon Lester (16-6, 3.21) and Daisuke Matsuzaka (18-3, 2.90)

Player to Watch: 2B Dustin Pedroia
Player on the Rise: P Jon Lester
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Third Place: Tampa Bay Rays

sports_tampaBayRays2.gif

For years, the Tampa Bay Rays were a laughing stock in baseball betting circles. Last year, though, the stars finally aligned. Sucking for all those years allowed the Rays to stockpile prospects and everyone seemed to break out simultaneously. After the Rays defied the MLB odds in 2008, one question weighs heavily on sports betting fans’ minds: was last season a fluke?

For the most part, the answer is a resounding “no.” Tampa retained pretty much every major component of its AL pennant-winning roster. The only factor working against the Rays is money - namely, the giant pile of it dropped by the Yankees and Red Sox over the summer in their free-agent frenzy. There’s no denying the Rays will be hard-pressed to make the playoffs again simply because they share a division with the top two World Series odds favorites for 2009. However, while Tampa didn’t spend like crazy in the offseason, their young stars should continue improving, meaning they should field a better team on Opening Day than they did last year.

The Rays’ hitting should remain a potent blend of power and speed. Budding superstar Evan Longoria doesn’t seem like the “sophomore slump” type, so baseball betting fans should expect improvement. His phenomenal defense is a nice bonus, too. Carlos Pena is a steady source of homers and gets on base, while toolsy B.J. Upton’s power explosion in the playoffs last year suggests he’s starting to harness his talent. Offseason signing Pat Burrell is a perfect fit at DH and should launch 30 dingers. The fact that Carl Crawford, once the face of the franchise, is almost an afterthought shows just how far the Rays have come.

Tampa’s former Achilles heel looks like its greatest strength now. The starting rotation has no holes and lots of upside; Scott Kazmir and James Shields are entering their prime, Matt Garza is delivering on his former top-prospect hype and the sky’s the limit for flamethrower David Price, who is a prime Rookie-of-the -Year candidate. Online sports betting fans don’t have to sweat at the sportsbook while the Rays protect a lead anymore; Troy Percival can still get the job done, while Dan Wheeler and Grand Balfour former one of the best setup tandems in baseball.

Top to bottom, the Rays’ roster is talented, young and exciting. While offshore sportsbooks can’t favor them to win the AL East considering how improved Boston and New York are, the Rays are still more than capable of keeping up with the big boys all season long. Ninety wins is still realistic.

Player to Watch: 1B Carlos Pena
Player on the Rise: 3B Evan Longoria
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fourth Place: Baltimore Orioles

baseball_baltimoreOrioles.gif

Most MLB betting fans say playing the AL East is a death sentence if you’re not the Red Sox or Yankees. Well, now that the Rays join that elite list, life gets even harder for Baltimore and Toronto. Then again, the Rays’ story gives online sports betting players and young teams like Baltimore hope, doesn’t it?

Last year, the O’s proved they can sorta hit and, giving the young talent on their roster, it wasn’t a fluke. In fact, B-More should have even more pop in 2009. After an offseason trade, Felix Pie joins Adam Jones and Nick Markakis in what will be one of the most dynamic, athletic outfields in baseball for years to come. All three starters are five-tool players; Markakis is already one of the game’s top young hitters while Jones and Pie still need more seasoning.

The Orioles’ infield has some pop too; Aubrey Huff may regress after his career year but is still in his prime, while Brian Roberts is a great table setter at the top of the order.Ty Wigginton joins Luke Scott in what will at least be an adequate platoon at DH.

Pitching will easily be Baltimore’s Achilles heel in 2009. Sure, they have Hayden Penn, but he hasn’t shown he’s remotely ready - or healthy enough - to pitch at the major league level. That means Baltimore must try to squeeze another surprisingly good year out of the hittable-but-solid Jeremy Guthrie. If Japanese import Koji Uehara and reclamation project Rich Hill pan out, the Orioles’ staff could survive. But I wouldn’t bet on it at the sportsbook. All signs point to the O’s staff getting beaten up badly in 2009. Online betting fans will want to pick the “over” whenever Baltimore faces AL East rivals in MLB lines.

The O’s bullpen looks respectable, as Chris Ray hopes to regain his closing job after having - gulp - Tommy John surgery last year. Considering “All-Star” George Sherrill had a 6.59 ERA after the break last year, Ray’s competition won’t be fierce.

While the Orioles have enough young guns to keep die-hard fans coming to the park, they look doomed to dwell between fourth and fifth in the AL East this year. MLB betting fans shouldn’t rely on them until they find reliable pitching.

Player to Watch: OF Nick Markakis
Player on the Rise: C Matt Wieters
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fifth Place: Toronto Blue Jays

baseball_torontoBlueJays.gif

What a difference a season can make. A year ago, the Jays were on everyone’s sleeper list in the MLB odds. They had, arguably, the best pitching in the AL, featuring a one-two punch of Roy Halladay and A.J. Burnett, good young arms in Dustin McGowan and Shaun Marcum and the league’s stingiest bullpen. They also were perceived to have a solid if unspectacular hitting lineup with plenty of pop. In many ways, online betting fans expected the Jays to do what the Rays did last year.

Pretty amazing how quickly those hopes have evaporated at the sportsbook. Forget Toronto’s disappointing 2008; 86 wins wasn’t really a “bust.” It’s 2009 that looks like a nightmare for Canada’s team. Not only did the mercenary Burnett bolt for the Yankees, but McGowan (shoulder) and Marcum (Tommy John) were both lost to surgery. McGowan will return in May at the absolute earliest while Marcum won’t play in 2009. Thus, a strength is suddenly a weakness for Toronto.

The Jays’ hitting could really go either way; it grossly underachieved for two seasons before Cito Gaston, the man who managed Toronto to World Series titles in 1992 and 1993, returned and got the hitters swinging freely again. Sure, there’s upside - Vernon Wells and Alex Rios are talented and youngsters Adam Lind and Travis Snider appear ready to become viable major league sluggers - but, as usual, a lot has to go right for the Jays to compete in MLB odds this year.

The bullpen should remain a strength, with B.J. Ryan healthy for now and the likes of Brandon League and Jesse Carlson forming a capable supporting unit. But will it matter if the Jays have no leads to protect in the ninth inning?

No matter how optimistic an online sports betting fan could be about the Jays, Toronto has little to no hope in the 2009 MLB odds. Even if they absurdly overachieved and somehow won, say, 90 games, that could still put them fourth in their division. In fact, three other teams in AL East alone - the Yankees, Red Sox and Rays - are, arguably, among the top five World Series betting candidates for ‘09.

Yep, it’ll be a long year for Blue Jay fans. I’m not saying you can never pick them in MLB lines this season, but make sure you only pick them in favorable matchups.

Player on the Rise: OF Travis Snider

I'm lazy Mitch, what happened to your other one?
And it's the Rogers Centre now. ;)

played it on MLB 2K9 for 360 which sucks so this one will be on the Show for PS3.
++ I know they cahnged the name- my mom works for Rogers- but everyone here still calls it Skydome.

Layouts: Credits to Codizzle and The Messenger for inspiring the layouts

That's funny. Considering that series preview is identical to mine. Font and all. Not to mention, dizzles layout is MY layout, to the T.

Ya the first post was posted before I used your series preview so it didn't have your name in it and it still had 2K9 in it, I fixed it.
Sorry if I used it without your permission.
And I know Dizzle changed his layout for his Lakers chise to yours when he said he didnt have a lot of time anymore. My layout is based off his original NBA layout with moderation to fit baseball, lol.

Oh i see, I'm thinking about picking up the Show if I get some extra money here. And I figured you'd know that, I'm just giving you a hard time.

But anyways, I'll be following.

Photo: Indians outfielder Grady Sizemore swings at a Roy Halladay pitch. Sizemore hit a lead off home run off Halladay.

Manager's Monologue:

"Roy was good. I know he gave up that lead off homer to Sizemore but it's still fairly early in the season. What I'm worried about at this point is our offense which has scored three runs total in this series against two middle of the road pitchers. Gene [Tenece, Blue Jays hitting coach] is going to have to work with them to ensure they improve their games. ”

Toronto, we have a problem!

iconphotostwo093858-mlb-jul-11-clev-cliff-lee-cy-young-award.jpg

Photo:Indians pitcher Cliff Lee composes himself before throwing a pitch. Lee pitched a complete game giving up only five hits.

Manager's Monologue:

"I don't know anymore, I really don't know. Sure Lee is an amazing pitcher but I expected at least one run today. This offense scored a total of THREE runs in this series. That is unexceptable. If this carries onto the Twins series we may have to shake this team up. On the other side, Jesse was great for six innings and kept us in the game, we just need some darn offensive help. ”
