Beam suffers season ending injury

​

ARLINGTON, TX (AP) -- A week after being sent down more bad news came T.J. Beam's way.

On Tuesday while throwing in relief for the Blue Jays' Triple-A affiliate Las Vegas, the reliever tweaked his shoulder and was to have it looked at Wednesday. The results weren't good.

Beam was diagnosed with a seperated shoulder that will keep him out for the rest of the season and part's of next season as well. In a four game stint with the big club this year Beam went 0-0 with a 2.18 ERA before being sent down Sunday after suffering a mild injury that is to be believed to have caused this larger one.

"Obviously it's tough to have to just sit on the sidelines and watch but I'll refine my game over the Winter and hopefully I can go into Spring Training ready to win a job." The confident Beam said Wednesday night while watching the 51's game.

Mike Maroth was called up from Double-A New Hampshire to fill Beam's spot.

TORONTO, ON (AP) -- Cito Gaston has not slept for two nights.

Why?

"The New York Yankees are coming to town and it's September." A tired Gaston told the press after the Jays 7-2 loss to the Texas Rangers Wednesday.

Flying back to Toronto from Arlington, Texas for a four game stretch against the New York Yankees you could not find a single player playing cards or listening to iPods. They were all neseled into a small video room in the back of the plane where Gaston along with pitching coach Brad Arnsberg and hitting coach Gene Tenace were instructing their charges on the finer points of Yankees baseball.

That Yankees baseball versus the Jays high-octane attack have created many instant classics this season, sadly the Jays were on the wrong side of those games most times. These classics include three straight walkoff Yankee wins in a four game series in July and a no hitter from Roy Halladay broken in the bottom nineth by Hideki Matsui for a walkoff grand slam.

"What can I say, they are a good team but we need to find a way to beat them if we want to continue playing in October." Gaston said.

The Jays have gone a mediocre 4-12 against the Bronx Bombers this season and have seven games left against the Evil Empire including a two game set at Yankee Stadium in mid-September. This series at Rogers Center is by far the most important for both teams.

The Yankees sit at 78-57 and have a four game lead in the Wildcard over the Blue Jays with the Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Indians in contention as well. The Jays have gone on a recent losing skid and sit at 73-59 going into game one tonight at Rogers Center.

However, there is still hope for the Jays as they expect star slugger Jim Edmonds to be back by mid-September which will give them a bat to add to a lineup that has been lacking in the power department lately.

"We wish we could have Jimmy back earlier but it is what it is and we just hope he comes back healthy and ready to rock." Center fielder Vernon Wells said.

The Jays have to come to terms with the fact that Edmonds will not be back in time for this set and have much bigger things to worry about, namely the Yankees' lineup. September is the month Alex Rodriguez is famous for heating up in and Mark Teixeira has been All-Star caliber playing first for the Yanks this year. Combine that with the fact the Yankees throw their three best pitchers against the Jays and you have a potential massacre in the making as the only sure thing the Jays have pitching in the series is Roy Halladay who sadly cannot pitch everyday.

"Obviously we have that Wildcard race in the back of our minds but right now we're just focused on playing good baseball." Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter said.

However this series ends you can expect it to be can't miss baseball that will provide several can't miss finishes that ultimately determine the American League Wildcard winner and hopefully at the end of it, if the Jays play well, afford Gaston some sleep.
