Lind injured, Snider gets call

​

DETROIT, MI (AP) -- A day after a freak injury ended Toronto Blue Jays' left fielder Adam Lind's season, the Jays' prized prospect Travis Snider will now be thrust into the spotlight in what is escentially an audition for a starting job in 2010.

During an at-bat in the fifth inning of last night's game at Comerica Park in Detroit, Lind came up lame after taking a swing at a Juan Rincon breaking-ball. He was pulled out of the game for precautionary reasons according to manager Cito Gaston who inserted the rookie Snider into the game for Lind.

"It's tough obviously to lose a middle of the order guy like Lindsy right in the stretch run but hopefully Snider can come in and give us some quality at-bats." Gaston said.

Lind was diagnosed with a torn groin which will keep him out of action until February, only a month before Spring Training starts. He had been having his best statistical season of his career batting .308 with 17 home runs and 75 RBIs while starting in left field for most of the season.

"It's tough to have to watch the rest of the year but that's how it goes sometimes I guess." Lind said on Saturday.

Snider has a .271 batting average with 7 RBIs in two seperate stints with the Jays and is expected to bat 5th behind cleanup hitter Adrian Beltre. Snider had been hitting a torrid .338 in Triple-A Las Vegas and was recalled last weekend when major league rosters expanded to 40 men.

First baseman Kevin Millar was called up to fill Lind's roster spot. Millar batted .330 with 7 RBIs in a prior callup this season with the Jays.

Fisher Cats' season done, Bullington called up

​

DETROIT, MI (AP) -- As night consumed Center City Field in Binghamton, New York the home and visiting clubhouses were in immensly different spirits.

In the home clubhouse the Binghamton Mets were drinking spirits while across the way in the visitors room the New Hampshire Fisher Cats' spirits were lower than Bryan Bullington's release point. Hours earlier, Bullington, who had been pitching a nine strikeout gem, blew up in the bottom of the eighth inning and surrendered a 3-0 lead that would have turned the series into a winner goes home affair Monday in Manchester.

"It's tough, man, to see your season end like that, but at least we made it this far." Fisher Cats manager Gary Cathcart managed to blurt out after the game ended 4-3 in favor of the Mets.

Indeed, after a dream season in which they finished with the best record in Double-A, it all fell apart in the playoffs against the plucky Mets lineup.

"You know what, we gave it our best and obviously you want to win but it is what it is." Bullington said after the game.

This may have been Cathcart's last chance for a Double-A championship as the 37 year old is expected to be promoted to the manager of the Triple-A Las Vegas 51's after their manager Mike Basso quit with two games left in the year.

"I'd like that and it's not like I'll never see these kids again but I'm attached to the city and team after 15 years here so I'll have to think it over long and hard with my family." Cathcart says of the move.

Following the game, Bullington was called up to the major league team where he will act as a situational reliever and may get a start or two.

Barajas finally returns from injury

​

DETROIT, MI (AP) -- It's not that the catching position had been bereft of talent for the past month that incumbant Rod Barajas had been injured, it's that none of the group of Curtis Thigpen, Michael Barrett and Raul Chavez could compare to the numbers he put up as the starting catcher in Toronto.

Now the .283 hitter returns from the DL, and just in time to help his team climb the 4 game mountain in the AL Wildcard race the New York Yankees have over them. Barajas had 16 home runs and 61 RBIs before his groin injury suffered August 13 but says he is back to full health now.

"I'm feeling good, I had been taking some cuts during my rehabilitation and I was hitting the ball well, it's just a matter of coming back and doing it in a game." A confident Barajas said.

Barajas will most likely make his first start back Tuesday against the Yankees while rookie J.P. Arencibia gets the call in the series finale between the Jays and Detroit Tigers on Monday.
