Game of the Year leaves Gaston stunned

ST.PETERSBURG, FL (AP) -- Cito Gaston is not Lou Pinella. For one, the mustachioed Gaston is not the manager of a certain team that hasn't won a title in 100 years but has clinched a playoff spot already but the manager of a team fresh of blowing their biggest lead of the season.

If that had happened to Pinella's club, you would not see him calmly taking an interview after the game and the clubhouse's chairs and water coolers would have been praying for their safety, even moreso after a 9-2 lead was evaporated and turned into a 12-11 shelacking of shocking proportions. Even Tampa's bespectacled manager Joe Maddon couldn't believe his own occular-enhanced eyes after pinch hitter and former Blue Jay Gabe Gross hit a 405 foot shot to left center field off of Shawn Camp.

"How did I react? I didn't believe it man. To come back from 9-2 down, lose three key players and STILL win... I don't know what to say." Madden said flabbergasted.

Indeed, it may have been even more of a shock to Maddon considering his Rays had not beaten the Jays this season, going 0 for 10 including three series sweeps and in fact, it did look like that record would extend to 0 for 11 after the Jays' start.

Tampa brought sophomore David Price to the mound against rookie Luis Perez, making only his second start of his career- and after his outing, perhaps his last. The first inning began with an Alex Rios strikeout, Aaron Hill groundout and Vernon Wells flyout, not surprising since the Jays had scored only 33% of their runs in the first 5 innings of games this season going into last night's game at Tropicana Field, affectionatly called the Trop by fans. Perez's start would be the polar opposite of Price's smooth one as he began the game walking speedster Carl Crawford who promptly stole second and would score the very next pitch on a B.J. Upton single up the middle.

"I think Luis had a slight bit of nerves coming in, obviously he'd never faced hitters like (Evan) Longoria or (Carlos) Pena." Gaston sighed after the game.

Perez was the least of the Rays' troubles, as in the top of the second inning Price gave up consecutive two run blasts to Wayne Lydon and Lyle Overbay to extend the lead in the Jays' favor 4-1. The Rays would come right back next inning with a Matt Joyce rope off of the Tropicana orange in right field. Perez was visually rattled but Gaston decided to keep the young Dominican in there. After a 1-2-3 third for both team's it looked like Gaston was a genius as Perez had been throwing strikes all over the place in the third.

"I was quite happy with my pitch location in that inning but after that I guess they were just figuring out where the ball was going." Perez said after the game.

Price's day would be over quick in the fourth after giving up three straight doubles to Lydon, Overbay and Marco Scutaro and leaving two runners on with Vernon Wells coming to the plate. Maddon replaced the young Price with the even younger Jeff Niemann, who on the first pitch of his career, served up a nice three run homer to make the Jays lead a seemingly unsurmountable 9-2 going into the bottom of the fourth.

"Not the way I'd have liked to start my career off but at least I got here right." Joked the 6'9" right hander.

Amazingly through, the game the Jays once thought was there's was that way for one commercial break and then it was a game again. A Matt Joyce home run, a couple of doubles and an Upton triple all lead to Perez being pulled after three and a third's innings and the score being back to 9-7. Wells' home run was now looking like it would be the Jays' saving grace.

The rest would unfold like a bad soap opera, with drama and action everywhere in the domed home of the Rays in downtown St.Petersburg. Bryan Bullington couldn't hold the lead, Evan Longoria hits a two run shot to take the lead, Wells ties it with his second homer of the game, Mark Sobolewski singles in the go-ahead run, Gabe Kapler hits a gapper just over the head of Overbay and of course Gross ends it with a bomb, yet, in the visitors lockeroom in the Trop, you will find plenty of heartache and dispair but not a broken water cooler or chair in sight.

Perez replaced in the starting rotation with Bullington

ST.PETERSBURG, FL (AP) -- Years after he was chalked up as a humungous bust, Bryan Bullington is going to get a late season shot with the Toronto Blue Jays to help reverse his fortunes and reputation.

A day after starter Luis Perez was blown up by the Tampa Rays while surrendering 7 runs in only three and a third innings, Jays manager Cito Gaston announced that Perez would be retiring to the bullpen which opened a rotation spot for the former number one pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

"I'm excited to be getting a chance like this, I honestly thought (Ricky) Romero would be getting this promotion but hopefully I can do well and win some games." Bullington said enthusiastically last night.

Bullington was called up two weeks ago after the Double-A affiliate New Hampshire Fisher Cats lost in the first round of the Double-A playoffs, including a game in which Bullington went 8 strong innings with 10 strikeouts only to see his team eliminated thanks to a late rally.

"We think Bullington has some good stuff and good mechanics and we think he can help us win some games this late in the season." Gaston said.

With only 14 games left and sitting 2.5 games out of a playoff spot, Gaston better be right.

Very strange things happen in MLB too ... including monster comebacks. I'm forgetting who it was but I thought there was a team, perhaps this season, that had TWO comebacks after being down by something like 8+ runs.

Baseball can be a very strange game.

Example: If one were to give up 2 grand slams in one inning to Fernando Tatis, one would say "that would never happen in real baseball", but it did ... to Chan Ho Park.

We saw another strange thing the other day when a pitcher rumored to be traded, demoted to the bullpen, gets a spot start due to an injury ... and throws the organization's first no hitter in 33 years.
