Anytime a team makes a great season comeback to earn a spot in the playoffs, they always get help from another team ... usually a collapse, like the Cards over the Phils in the 60s, or the Phils over the Mets last year.
Imagine the Giants' frustration in '93 when they won 103 games and finished 2nd, out of the playoffs, since the Braves won 104 games, and won the west and took on the Phillies in the playoffs (pre-division realignment and wildcard)
You need one of the top teams to falter a bit so you can narrow the gap.
