The Braves definitely could. I'm not sure how many fit your criteria...Garret Anderson is old, but we have two righties in Martin Prado and Omar Infante

Maybe another bullpen arm or some middle infield prospects (either at 2B, SS, or 3B) or a young power bat at 1B. Depending on who you give up you could maybe get one of our young pitchers like Rohrbough or Medlen. Idk a whole lot about Detroit's farm system.

We would probably put Thames out in left and let him split AB's with Matt Diaz, but he definitely has more home run power than either of those guys so he'd be a worthwhile pickup. Anderson for Thames doesn't seem all that bad, especially since Marcus is playing like shit for you and it seems as if you're taking more of a "win now" approach. Garret would be a nice lefty bat either off the bench or maybe in the #6 or #7 slot - in my Braves chise he hit 38 2B's in close to 400 AB's, so he's a great gap hitter.

And yeah, lol...our farm system is loaded. Hanson, Heyward, Freeman, Medlen, Rohrbough, Schafer, Hicks, Kimbrel, and all them. Future looks good.

For two reasons. One, Thames is younger; Anderson is 36. Two, we don't have a guy anywhere on our roster with the type of pure, unbridled home run powder that Thames has. Even if he's not starting full-time, the dude can hit bombs.

Garret would be coming off the bench for me. I'm basically trading power (which Atlanta needs considering their league ranking in homers/which I have an abundance of) for a left handed contact hitter. Aside from Granderson, Anderson, Guillen (Switch) and Clete Thomas (recently optioned back to AAA) all my guys are right handed hitters. My past 2 games against the Cardinals, I've faced right handed pitchers and it's like the bats have been taken out of my hands.

And like you mentioned, the age thing. Garret is getting up there. I don't know how much postseason experience he has, but I'm sure I could use some.

Garret definitely has playoff experience after playing with the Angels all those years.

Oh, and he is the definition of a contact hitter. I was watching the Braves game the other night and they showed a stat that said since 1997, Garret and Johnny Damon have the most hits in MLB by left-handed hitters.

Adam Dunn is a different player than Ryan Howard, mainly because of age, defensive ability, etc. Dunn could be had for a couple good prospects (and good ones) because the Nats have said they don't want to trade him.

There's no reason for the Phils to trade Howard because they actually contend and don't need to get rid of one of their best players.

Or Paul Konerko - he's better defensively than Thome.

What about an Adam LaRoche type guy? 25-30 homer power. Or, Hank Blalock.

I'm exploring trade possibilities with the Nationals now. Nick Johnson in particular. He's a left handed hitter. I know the Nationals need some long relief and a closer. I'd be willing to part ways with Brandon Lyon and Nate Robertson. I want to let go of Marcus Thames as well but they seem to have an abundance of left fielders.

I'm stuck. I like Garret Anderson but I think Nick Johnson would fit in better.

They're not a whole lot different. Anderson is older but Johnson has dealt with quite a few injuries in his career. Garret actually has more homers this year than Nick Johnson does and their average is similar (at least I think, off the top of my head).

nick johnson is hitting over .300 (.020 higher than anderson which is pretty big), has an obp over .400 (around .100 more than anderson), and has the same slg pct. (about .010 less)

id say johnsons the better player

In my chise, Johnson is hitting about .250 or so. Anderson is currently hot, hitting for .310 or so.

I still think Johnson would be the better pickup. Now and in the long run. I can't see myself trying to bring an aging Anderson back for another year. Johnson however, based on his performance, I could see myself wanting to bring him back.

I just can't seem to find a trade that makes sense for Johnson, whereas the Anderson trade is much easier to do.

I practically need to unload Thames. Washington just seems to have an overload of left fielders.

Wouldn't getting church being kind of weird considering he's now a member of the braves? That's really the only thing that made me think twice about pursuing him. He does look like a BAMF though.
