Pacers-Sixers: Second Round Breakdown And Analysis

The Pacers are opening eyes around the league now with their 4-1 manhandling of the #1 seeded Miami Heat in the 1st round. Injury-riddled or not, an 8th seed winning in the 1st round will earn you some recognition. But now, another obstacle stands in their way. The Philadelphia 76ers, who managed to eliminate the Celtics, last years NBA champions, 4-1. Was the injury to Paul Pierce in the 1st round the only reason the Sixers were able to advance or are these guys for real? Let’s take a deeper look into the series...

Can Daniels And Rush Continue To Step Up?

With Wally Szczerbiak likely to miss this series while nursing a separated shoulder injury, Marquis Daniels will find himself in the starting role once again for the Pacers while rookie Brandon Rush will also see a boost in playing time. Daniels' defensive presence was definitely felt in the Heat/Pacers series as Dwyane Wade was held to 11 or less points in games 3 and 4. In game 5, with the Pacers in a position to close out the series in Miami, not a whole lot of defense was played as the Pacers managed to squeeze out 125-117 win. Rush's performance in that game was a huge factor as he scored 24 points while shooting 6-8 from beyond the arch. These two guys will have to continue to perform at a high level.

Front Court Play:

While the Pacers front court were able to have their way against a much smaller Heat frontcourt in the 1st round, the Sixers frontcourt won't be as easy to matchup with. Elton Brand is a solid rebounder and scorer down low and can do more than just hold his own down low while Samuel Dalambert is a very agile big man with an uncanny ability to block shots. Chris Kaman and Chris Wilcox's best bet would to force the issue inside and force them into foul trouble and prevent them from wreaking havoc out there.

One Huge Factor:

With many predicting this series to go 7 games, a huge factor is the experience which clearly Philadelphia owns. Most of the guys on this Sixers team played together in last years playoff run. They've played big games and shown they can win. They know what each guy brings to the table. For almost all of the Pacers, this is their first trip to the post-season, let alone to the 2nd round. It’s going to spell trouble if the Pacers are over anxious, force shots, and try and play outside their game. If Danny Granger can put up the numbers he did in previous matchups against the Sixers earlier this season, the Pacers should be in decent shape to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals.

With both teams heading into the 4th quarter tied at 84, the Sixers managed to get the plays the needed down the stretch, edging out the Pacers by 5. Elton Brand racked up a monster double with 28 points on 13 rebounds on then Pacer, Troy Murphy. Louis Williams also scored 18 points off the Sixers bench to help the Sixers to victory in Indiana.

T.J. Ford had a solid performance with 29 points to go with 10 assists. However, the Pacers would be outscored in the 3rd quarter 38-25. The Sixers big men had big games, both racking up double doubles. The Pacers shot under 40% while the Sixers shot over 50% in Philly.

Danny Granger set a career high(at that time) in this matchup with 49 points. Not to mention a game winning shot over a double team. Roy Hibbert also got the starting nod in this matchup while Chris Kaman was out with the flu and had a solid 16/10 performance.

Pacers Stun Sixers, Shift Series Back To Indiana

I wonder what nickname Philadelphia will give to Marquis Daniels. The "tatooed killer" would probably work.

The Indiana Pacers beat the Philadelphia 76ers in a thriller that Michael Jackson would be envious of. The teams did not let each other pull away during the entire 48 minutes of action.

With around 20 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Elton Brand made a tough jumper off the glass tying the game at 115-115. Danny Granger James took the ball up the court, penetrated the lane and dished it out to Marquis Daniels who made a go-ahead trey from the corner putting the Pacers ahead with 5.4 seconds left to play. The Sixers had a chance to tie the game, but Andre Iguodala missed a tough shot and the Pacers prevailed.

Marquis Daniels had a hot hand throughout the game, making 6-9 from the field. He ended up with 18. Granger racked up 27 points and 6 assists. Chris Kaman had 21 with 9 rebounds and 4 blocks in a solid defensive showing by this years Defensive Player of the Year.

The Sixers' Dalambert (16 and 14) and Brand (22) stood out in the losing effort.

The Pacers and Sixers and now tied at 1 game a piece with the series shifting to Indiana. Both games thus far in the series have been determined by less than 5 points. Things will get rough. ​
