Pacers Decision To "Go Green" Paying Off

An injection of youth and athleticism arrived in the form of Gerald Green this past offseason, after signing a lengthy 4 year deal with the Indiana Pacers.

The sight of Green rising up for one of his patented throwdowns no doubt played into the Pacers thinking, but the Houston native has shown flashes of being more than just a one-trick pony.

“He can get up and down the court, fill the lanes and has real solid range,” Pacers Head Coach Jim O' Brien said. “We've been able to develop a good system for Gerald here. Having the opportunity to play with guys who've been in the league a while simplifies things. That certainly has a place with young, developing players."

Green has scored in double digits in 7 of the Pacers last 10 games, including a season high 23 points lastnight in a win against the Warriors, where Gerald put on a high flying display, getting to the rim for strong dunks on numerous occasions. (highlight reel above)

“We've given him the perfect stage here to take a shot on,” O' Brien said. “He’s been humbled a little bit earlier in his career and now understands the work that has to be put in."

The Pacers view adding Green as low risk with the potential for high reward in the vein of Sean Williams and Javaris Crittenton. That strategy of signing young players that didn’t catch on early in their careers has yielded a couple of solid contributors for the Pacers.

“We’ve had great success with guys like Sean and Javaris,” O' Brien said. "To give an opportunity to Gerald at 23 is something that has a lot of upside, and we are seeing it now.”​

Granger No Longer Feeling Pain From Strained Achilles

Indiana Pacers forward Danny Granger says he's nearly ready to return from injury and help his team get back on track.

The All-Star has missed the past 16 games with a strained achilles tendon. He was sitting out lastnight's game against Minnesota, but he expects to return in tomorrow night's game in Cleveland against the Cavaliers.

"We were hoping for tonight's game, but that was out of the question," Granger said after the team's loss to the T'Wolves lastnight. "By Thursday, I should be okay."

Granger averages a team-best 25 points a game, but the Pacers have managed to go 7-9 in Granger's absence. Indiana also has been without guard Brandon Rush for the past 6 games who is recovering from a separated shoulder.

Despite those aches and pains, the Pacers are still right in the thick of the Eastern Conference standings (#4) and still sitting atop the Central Division, 1.5 games ahead of the Cavaliers.

"It's pretty tough, but we're playing well, so that's great," Granger said. "We really didn't lose any ground. We've kept our heads above water. It's been an uphill battle for us with these injuries but these guys have fought through the adversity."​

Mavericks rookie Hasheem Thabeet has suffered a broken hand and is expected to be out for 28 days. The 19-25 Mavericks woes continue as they will certainly miss the 2.4 blocks per game Thabeet has been averaging so far in his rookie campaign.

Ailing Back Will Force Sheed To Miss Some Games

Indiana Pacers Head Coach Jim O' Brien was busy discussing the importance of forward Rasheed Wallace to the team's success, and the difficulty that ensues when Rasheed is either off his game or out of the lineup.

"We know we can win if he's not playing his best, but when he's playing well and shooting the ball well, we feel we're probably as tough as anybody to beat in this league."

No sooner had the words spilled from O' Brien's mouth, a Pacers trainer stuck his head in the door and said, "Coach, Sheed is out tonight. Back spasms."

O' Brien seemed dumbfounded.

Rasheed will be out of action for the next 5 days or so to rest his back. Anthony Randolph will start at the power forward spot in Rasheed's absence.​
