Fickell sucks. Is he coaching himself off the staff altogether or will he be allowed to return to his assistant post next year?
There's no way Fickell would come back into a lesser position, regardless of how he does as head coach.
What you are seeing with the offensive staff is what happens when Jim Tressel, Darrell Hazell, as well as talents like Troy Smith and Terrelle Pryor aren't there to cover up the deficiencies. Jim Bollman flat out can't cut it. It's amazing how similar it is to Greg Davis at Texas. We've been bitching for years about getting a real OC/OL coach and now it seems like we're going to after this season.
I am willing to cut Fickell some slack though. He's never been a head coach before, is learning on the job, and is pretty handcuffed by what he can do given the fact that he's got Tressel's guys, not his own guys, controlling the offense. Defense is fine, and Fickell runs that side of the ball (With Heacock as well).
It's the offense that is a complete abortion. With a functioning offense, we're probably 5-0 right now. Granted, the defense got gashed by Miami, but we settled for FG's and passed for like 13 yards yet we were in it and driving to pull within 3 until Braxton fumbled it away in the 4th. Fick has to show that he is changing the hierarchy or getting more involved on that side of the ball, absolutely has to.
That said, I think the biggest factor in who coaches here next year is the NCAA decision.
If a guy like Urban Meyer wants to coach here, give him the job, the key to the city, and if he wants to build a Tebow statue on the 50 yard line let him do it.
The other
realistic candidates (Bo Pelini, Tim Beckman, etc.) don't really stand out to me. We'd be better off sticking with Fickell if it comes down to it and let him hire a new offensive staff and see how that pans out (I say this in the scenario that he rights the ship and finishes well).
We're still only 5 games in. At this point, Fickell should not be retained. But there's a lot of football left. Who knows, this team could stun everyone (including me) and beat Nebraska. I'll wait to assess whether he should keep his job or not until the clock strikes double zeroes against Michigan.
