NFL Overtime: Do you agree with the current system?

Coin toss stats are gay. Who gives a rats ass if 52% of the time the coin flip team wins.

From a fan perspective what is the best option?

-a 3 minute drive (typically aided by a PI penalty) with a FG.
-another full or partial quarter of action
-some weird non traditional offensive shootout


The 3 minute drive FG shit is boring and almost always fails to capture any of the excitement seen throughout the previous 60 minutes of football.

Another quarter (be it 8, 10 or 15 minutes) would give continuing action that doesn't end on the first FG and teams would continue to drive and play hard football, building up until yet another dramatic finish at the end of the quarter. Plenty of continued excitement within the standard rules of football. win!

The shootout isn't football, it's cheap thrills that undermines two facets of the sport, defence and special teams. There's no threat of a long FG, there's no need for punts and the strategic battle of field position, there's no real defence cause they basically need to be perfect starting just outside the fuckin redzone. It's not football, it's garbage and a mockery of what makes football so awesome. Why do they bother playing extra innings in baseball? Why not just have a fucking HR derby after 9 innings? Stupid ass shit.

Here's something I've heard of before..


The ball starts at the 20 no matter what. The coin toss winner can decide whether they want to play defense or offense. Because if some team is dominating the other on defense all game and offense has been subpar, playing defence would be a better decision. If they force a 3 and out than they will have great field position. They also don't have to deal with their offense throwing a pick 6 because at the 20 they are deep in their own territory.

The most interesting number to me is, that according to those numbers both teams have gotten the a possesion most of the time.

Between 1974 and 2003 both teams got a possession 72.3% of the time.
Between 2000 and 2007 both teams got a possession 70% of the time.

If you have a 50/50 shot of winning the toss and then a ~70% chance of getting a possession if you don't. I don't think it's really that unfair. Maybe my math is off but that'd mean your team would get a chance on offense 85% of the time regardless of the coin toss.

I like the system the way it is. I'd be okay with a change to the Arena style or an extra period (5, 10 or 15 min.) but college OT is retarded...I hate it.

I would like this system if the rules weren't how they are . I am fully in support of the idea that the team who loses the toss should just shut up and play defense .

BUT ... with the current rules I find myself changing my mind about this more and more . With the current NFL trend of high flying passing attacks mixed with flag happy refs it can really kill any sort of fairness .

Do it how college does it, but none of this ball in field position shit. You kick the ball off like any normal NFL possession. Football should NOT be a sudden death sport.. it simply shouldnt work that way IMO.

Ideally there would be no overtime in the regular season.

For the playoffs it should be extra quarters, maybe shortened to 8 or 10 minutes. Perhaps sudden death after 2 quarters of that.

I think each team should get a minimum of one possession. If the receiving team(team 1) scores, the kicking team(team 2) should get a shot to respond. If team 1 doesn't score and team 2 does, game over. If neither team can score or both teams score the same amount of points on their first possession, then it becomes sudden death, first team to score wins. Seems the fairest to me.

No. Nothing involving starting at any predetermined spot works. That's for ping-pong not football. Kickoffs and punts are part of the game too, spotting a team 50 yards not only removes half of the field it also removes 1/3 of the aspects of football.

I reiterate, the best thing to do, is play it like an actual game. The college OT sucks because it's awarding statistics and records based on farcical plays. Starting at the 25 yard line (or any yard line for that matter) is like letting every baseball team start an extra inning with a runner on third.

How exactly does making it really easy to score tell us who the winner should be?

Let them play it out in some predetermined amount of time, whether it's a 10-minute period, 2 five-minute halves, 2 seven-minute halves, or a whole extra quarter, whatever it is is better than spotting the ball at midfield and saying "here you go we did it all for you now all you have to do is get a first down and some change, enjoy your FG"

You take special teams out of the game, you're playing a 66 percent football game. You start putting the ball in the same spot every time, you're taking the field position element out of the game.

If you are going to change it (and I don't mind it how it is right now, play some fucking defense if you don't want to lose...offenses are more efficient than ever now, because of rules and because of the transformation into a pass happy league from what it used to be), then change it to a FULL QUARTER.

-15 more minutes isn't going to kill these PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES who are paid MILLIONS OF DOLLARS and provided WORLD CLASS DOCTORS AND TRAINERS. They'll be fucking fine. Wes Welker tore everything in his knee on his first catch of a meaningless Week 17 game. If you're going to get injured, you're going to get injured. 15 more minutes (not like they're actually IN play for any more than a couple minutes during a quarter) isn't going to make any difference on these guys' bodies. I'm sorry, that's a ridiculous argument.

- If the score isn't resolved by the end, then it never will be. Tie. Except for the playoffs of course, and in that case: Wash, Rinse, Repeat.

Not only is this the most logical way to change it (provides most action/drama, takes any sort of OT 'what if' talk away, you play another quarter of fair, back and forth football, in which ALL THREE phases of the beautiful game of football are ever-so-important), it's also the only thing the NFL would ever consider switching to, in my opinion. They will NEVER adopt the college system (because it is the fucking NFL, there are 39062 teams in college, they can have crazy retarded shit like their OT and the BCS and it's all good), and they will NEVER place a certain amount of points you have to score in OT in order to win.

Well, technically they do. You have to score 1 point as is now. But I digress.

This post is 100% true and impossible to argue with (except maybe the extra challenge/booth review thing. Some would rather have booth reviews the entire OT, but everything would get fuckin' reviewed under the 'just to make sure since we can' unwritten rule refs seem to have, which would kill the buzz inside and outside of the stadium).
