ESPN's Adam Shefter reports that San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera has replaced Norv Turner as the team's head coach. Turner was fired following the Charger's loss to the Steelers in the second round of the playoffs for the second consecutive season. Rivera was under consideration for the head coaching position with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Eagles | McDermott promoted

ESPN's Adam Shefter reports that Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Sean McDermott has replaced Andy Reid as the team's head coach. Reid resigned following the team's 8-8, non-playoff 2009 season and is reportedly going to take the year off to spend more time dealing with his well-documented family issues.

I think this is the official list of guys I am considering. No idea which direction I am going in. I like that they don't reveal the coach's ratings until after you've signed them. It makes it tougher to choose and it forces you to really think in terms of their real life success and consider how it will translate to the game.

He sure was, you have to do something. Bringing in someone like Mike Martz would get your QB game rolling instantly and that is something you lacked last season.

NFL Network's Jason La Confora reports that the Cincinnati Bengals have announced that they will be holding a press conference at 2:00pm today. The team would not confirm or deny if the press conference is in regards to their head coaching vacancy.

The Cincinnati Bengals on Monday announced that they have hired former Rams head coach Mike Martz to serve as the 10th head coach in team history. Martz, who last coached as the 49ers offensive coordinator in 2008 before working the past year as an NFL Network analyst, is believed to have signed a three-year contract with the Bengals, who have had just one winning season over the past 19 years.

Martz is best known as the mastermind behind the St. Louis Rams high-powered 1999 team that won the Super Bowl and had tremendous offensive success over the following five seasons, earning the team's offense the nickname of "the Greatest Show on Turf." As a head coach in the NFL, Martz was 56-36 in 5 1/3 seasons. He won two division titles, had four playoff berths including a NFC championship and a trip to Super Bowl XXXVI.

"I hope to somehow match if not better my achievements from the past and I don't think we're that far away here despite last year's record," said Martz.

"We have some great pieces in place and in particular at quarterback. Having a quarterback like Carson Palmer was a big selling point for me and he's going to be a big part of what we do."

In 1999, Martz was hired as the offensive coordinator of the St. Louis Rams, who went on to win Super Bowl XXXIV that season. Martz was then named head coach of the Rams on February 2, 2000 after Dick Vermeil briefly retired. He led the Rams to a 10–6 regular season record that season, but the team lost in the 1st round to the New Orleans Saints 31–28.

2001 saw the Rams cruise to a 14–2 record and the NFC West title. Martz's Rams went on to win the NFC Championship game against the Eagles before losing in the Super Bowl to New England.

"I could not be more excited about the man we chose to hire," said Bengals Executive V.P./General Manager D.Geezy.

"Mike is just a guy that myself and (owner) Mike Brown both were comfortable with from the get-go. His history of winning in our league is pretty underrated and I think he can turn this thing around quickly."

During the seven years in which Martz was involved with the Rams, the team went to two of the franchise's three Super Bowls.

His record of 55–5 with a lead any time in the 4th Qtr (91.7 winning %) and 26.5 pts a game as a head coach are the best of all time by any coach in the history of the NFL.

"That record when leading after three quarters is pretty uncanny," said Geezy.

"That says a lot about the level of play-caller he is and that will hopefully help us close out games better than we did this past season."

Martz's last coaching stop, as offensive coordinator of the 49ers, ended after just one year. On December 26, 2008, when news emerged that Mike Singletary will be retained as the 49ers head coach in 2009, Martz was informed that he would not be coming back to the team as its offensive coordinator for a second season. In 2008, San Francisco ranked 23rd out of 32 teams in points scored, 24th in total yards, 13th in passing yards per game and 22nd in net passing yards per attempt. Those rankings did represent an improvement over 2007 (when SF ranked dead last in all 3 categories), but the team ranked 26th in rushing yards and was last in total turnovers. Singletary reportedly wanted more of a ball-control, run-oriented offense than Martz is known for crafting and Martz is not oblivious to the fact that his style of offense may need tweaking.

"You live and you learn every day in this league and if I had to do it all over again, I certainly would have been a little less pass-happy," said Martz.

"I'm not saying that I am going to completely change what I am going to do. But I will say that more attention will be paid to quarterback protection and running the football. Heck, in the years we had our most success in St. Louis, we were one of the league's most efficient running teams in terms of yards per rushing attempt and in rushing touchdowns. In 2001 when we went to the Super Bowl, we had a top 5 ranking in rushing yards. I know I need to get back to that."

In addition to Martz's hiring, the team announced at the press conference that Martz's coaching staff is all but in place and will be announced once all contracts are finalized with each individual.

"Mike had a staff all but ready to go and that was another thing that impressed us," said Geezy.

"They're all guys that he is familiar with either from being a colleague or as an opponent and they each have a history of success. We'll have that all finalized hopefully sometime today."

The NFL Network spoke to two of the Bengals' top players, QB Carson Palmer and WR Chad Ochocinco, who were both present at Bengals headquarters for the announcement press conference and this is what they had to say:

"I couldn't be more excited. Mike has done wonders for quarterbacks everywhere he has been and they've all put up good numbers in his system. I think this is a great first step to getting back to respectability and ultimately back to the playoffs and hopefully a Super Bowl.

"I think our offense already had potential. You got me, Carson, Brandon (London)...Chase Coffman and Bernard Scott both steppin' up. We were already a force to be reckoned with and now we add a man like Mike Martz to pilot the ship? You think you gonna stop that?...Child please."

Bengals.com reports that the team has hired former Rams wide receiver and current Jets wide receivers coach Henry Ellard as their new offensive coordinator. Ellard served as the St. Louis Rams' receivers coach from 2001-2008, the first five seasons of which were served under former Rams and new Bengals head coach Mike Martz. As in his past head coaching position, Martz will be the team's play-caller on game days however Ellard will be responsible for week-to-week game-planning.

Bengals.com reports that the team has hired former Browns head coach and Patriots defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel to serve as the team's defensive coordinator. Crennel is expected to bring his famed "Multiple Defense" used in New England which institutes concepts of both the 4-3 and 3-4. "Romeo is a guy I became extremely impressed with when I coached against him in the Super Bowl back during the 2001 season," said Bengals new head coach Mike Martz. "I always said that if I ever got another head coaching gig and he was available, he would be my guy. I always felt that he never got enough credit in New England."

Bengals.com reports that the team has hired NFL veteran special teams coach Bobby April to serve in the same capacity with the Bengals. April coached the St. Louis Rams special teams from 2001-2003 before being hired by the Buffalo Bills in 2004 as the team's assistant head coach/special teams coordinator. "Bobby is a guy I am familiar with and when I saw that he was without a job, it was a no-brainer," said Bengals new head coach Mike Martz.

Tearz you stole my thunder this morning. I was shocked that you guessed that one. You know traditionally I am more of a smash mouth, power offense guy so I figured you would have guessed someone like Bruce Arians.

You're right though... Carson is who I had in mind when I made the hire. Hopefully Martz can get Palmer to the next level.

Nice staff changes. Looks like you should get some bigger ends to fit the 3-4.

Yeah I have some plans for that. I think I am going to move one of my DTs to end. It'll depend on what I am able to find in FA and the draft.

I think the most comparable playbook is Sean Payton's so I am leaning heavily towards that. I may also see what the "Run N Gun" playbook looks like.

On defense, yes I am probably going with the "multiple D" playbook. This way I don't have to completely committ personnel wise to either set.
