Yeah looks like they're serious about getting some help for Flacco. They're coming off a bad year but they look solid now.

There's going to be some money considerations involved there. Smith wants a good bit more than Hill and we're running low on cash.

I do like Smith's speed though but Hill has some high ratings in the low range and mid range pass ratings. I really don't know which direction I am going to go in.

Basically what the "workout" means is that probably on my lunch break or later this evening I am going to sit down and analyze the ratings of each category, compare it to the QBs I had last year backing up Palmer, and analyze the money. Tough decision.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that the Cincinnati Bengals have signed 49ers free agent QB Shaun Hill (68 overall) to a 3-year $4.1 million contact. Hill beat out fellow former 49ers QB Alex Smith (71 overall) in a private workout conducted earlier in the day. Hill re-joins Bengals head coach Mike Martz, who was the offensive coordinator for the 49ers in 2008. According to sources, the team was impressed with Hill's accuracy in the short to medium passing game and also his lower salary demands played a factor in the decision. Smith was reportedly looking for a deal in the $2.2 million per year range which was too much for the Bengals' tight salary cap budget.

With the Bengals in a crunch salary cap wise, the team will need to make some moves to free up some room to sign their draft picks. The following is a list of players whose days in Cincinnati may be numbered:

DE Justin Bannan (68): Signed during 2010 free agent signing period to a 5-year $15.5 million contract but regressed after a decent 33 tackle, 2 sack season. He is due to make $2.52 million in 2011 and may be expendable.

DE Robert Geathers (77): The team's leading sacker each of the past two seasons is due to make $4.22 million in 2011. That is too much money for a situational pass-rusher who garnered 6 sacks in 2010. Also, at 6-3 265 pounds, Geathers is not a good fit for the team's new 3-4 scheme.

OLB John Digiorgio (67): Core special teams player signed last season is due to make $1.5 million this season. The team may look to replace Digiorgio with a younger, cheaper option.

OT Zach Strief (62): Reserve offensive tackle is due to make $1.22 million in 2010. Team could possibly fill Strief's spot in the draft and at a much cheaper pay rate.

SS Matt Giordano (65): Great core special teams player and solid back-up at both safety spots but high cap figure ($1.17 million) may cost him his job, especially if the team drafts secondary help.

QB Jordan Palmer (61): Didn't get the job done as a back-up quarterback last season and is scheduled to make just over $1 million next season. The team could likely get more bang for their buck with a cheaper developmental late round prospect.

Yeah he looked pretty awful. When the 49ers have to get one-dimensional like they did on Sunday, they get in trouble. That team is not built to come from behind.

Carson staying healthy is the key to this season. I think Hill can get the job done, but there was a noticeable difference once I lost my elite QB last season.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that the Cincinnati Bengals have traded veteran DE Robert Geathers (77) to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for the Bucs' 4th round and 5th round picks in the 2011 NFL draft. Geathers, who has led the Bengals in sacks each of the past two seasons as a situational pass rusher, was likely a cap casualty as he was due to make over $4 million next season. With the team set to move to a base 3-4 defense in 2011, the 6-3 265 pound end from Georgia was no longer a good fit. Geathers will likely start for Tampa Bay and he hopes to bring his pass rushing skills to the next level now that he will be an every down player. He registered 8 sacks in 2009 and 6 sacks in 2010 in his part-time role.
