NFL Training Camp/Preseason Random Thoughts

Bengals assigned the franchise tag to RE Michael Johnson.

He's the third player to be tagged on Friday, and likely not the last. Johnson will bring home $11.2 million under the tag after notching 11.5 sacks in the final year of his rookie contract. The sides have until mid-July to work out a long-term pact, but the Bengals figure to devote most of their time before free agency toward getting free agent RT Andre Smith signed to a multi-year deal.

Lions re-signed OT Corey Hilliard to a two-year contract.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Hilliard will get a shot at right tackle duties, but he appeared in zero games last season after playing just 151 snaps in 2011. A six-year veteran, Hilliard has made only five career starts. Riley Reiff and Jason Fox are both better bets to get the nod at right tackle.

Cardinals released ILB Stewart Bradley.

Signed to a five-year, $25 million deal after the lockout, Bradley was a mega-bust for the Cardinals, starting just one game in two seasons. He was relegated to special teams in 2012, and finishes his Cardinals tenure with only 42 tackles in 32 games. The move clears $3.5 million in cap space, but leaves behind $3 million in dead money. Going on 30, Bradley isn't going to get any guaranteed money on the open market. Finding someone to start opposite ILB Daryl Washington is a priority for Arizona.

Cardinals released CB William Gay.

He had one year remaining on a two-year deal. Gay started 15 games last season, but was a major liability in coverage. He's still only 28 years old, but the Cardinals apparently weren't banking on a return to form. Arizona has created $5.25 million in cap space by releasing Gay and LB Stewart Bradley.

Panthers released NT Ron Edwards.

The move clears roughly $1.67 million in cap space. It could be seen coming from a mile away for a player who signed a three-year, $8.25 million deal after the lockout. Edwards missed all of 2011 with a torn triceps, and was limited to 11 games last season by a dislocated elbow. Going on 34, Edwards wasn't productive when he took the field. He'll have a rough go of it in free agency.

Colts assigned the franchise tag to P Pat McAfee.

Get excited. The franchise tag for punters/kickers checks in at $2.97 million. Coach Chuck Pagano called locking McAfee up a "major priority" on Thursday. The four-year veteran was fifth in gross punting average last season.

Bills assigned the franchise tag to FS Jairus Byrd.

Team president Russ Brandon stated the Bills would only use the tag as a last resort, so the sides must be far apart in long-term talks. The tag will guarantee Byrd $6.9 million for 2013 once he signs on the dotted line. The sides have until mid-July to hammer out a multi-year pact. One of the league's preeminent ballhawks, keeping Byrd was a no-brainer for the Bills.

Broncos officially assigned the franchise tag to LT Ryan Clady.

Executive VP John Elway announced the team was going to tag Clady two weeks ago, so this comes as no surprise. The Broncos and Clady haven't even discussed a long-term deal since the season, and that's mainly due to the fact that Clady needs shoulder surgery and will be sidelined five-to-six months. Denver wants to see how he comes back from that before committing major dollars. Clady is said to be seeking a contract similar to what Joe Thomas signed -- eight years and $92 million with $44 million guaranteed.

The NFL has set the 2013 salary cap at $123.9 million, up from $120.6 million in 2012.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport initially reported the cap would be $123 million flat, but ESPN's Chris Mortensen says after accounting for league revenues, it gets a $900,000 bump. It's not a major spike, but it gives teams a little more breathing room than we were expecting. It could be the difference in keeping a veteran or signing a free agent.

Lot of talk out here about the Niners going after Revis. Personally, I think he is a shmuck and I don't think the Niners should waste their picks or time with this guy. We all know how good he is or can be when healthy but he's constantly bitching about money every other season it seems like.

I think Harvin would be a much bigger help.

Chiefs released RT Eric Winston.

Winston just signed a four-year, $22 million contract with Kansas City last offseason, but after franchising LT Branden Albert on Monday and there being a plethora of young tackle prospects in the draft, his services were no longer needed. The move saves $3.5 million in cap space. Winston should have plenty of options on the open market. For what it's worth, he's played most of his career in a zone-blocking scheme. A reunion with the Texans would make some sense. The Dolphins, Rams, Ravens, Redskins, and Lions also showed interest in him last offseason. His release clears a path for the Chiefs to take one of Luke Joeckel or Eric Fisher with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft if they so choose.

Rams released OT Wayne Hunter.

The gate swings closed. Acquired from the Jets on the eve of Week 1, Hunter was predictably incompetent as the Rams' third tackle last season, and slowed by back and knee issues. Going on 32, he's going to have a tough time on the open market. The move clears $4 million in cap space for the Rams, who need to aggressively address their tackle situation this offseason.

A league source tells the Denver Post the Broncos will pursue free agent Dwight Freeney if they can't get RE Elvis Dumervil to take a pay-cut.

Per beat writer Mike Klis, the Broncos believe they'd be better off paying Freeney $5 million instead of Dumervil's currently scheduled $12 million. Dumervil is the more productive player at this stage of their careers, but is grossly overpaid. A return to a 4-3 defense could also help Freeney rebound from a rough 2012. This won't be the last we hear of Freeney potentially reuniting with Peyton Manning.

Lions agreed to terms with WLB DeAndre Levy on a three-year contract.

Struggling through a hamstring injury last season, Levy graded out 41st among 43 qualifying 4-3 outside linebackers according to ProFootballFocus. He posted 81 tackles, no sacks, no forced fumbles and one interception. Still, the cap-strapped Lions apparently see him as an affordable complement to every-down MLB Stephen Tulloch. Free agent SLB Justin Durant now appears unlikely to be back in Detroit.

49ers released K David Akers.

The Sideline View's Adam Caplan reported the move was imminent on Monday. Just one year removed from one of the greatest kicking seasons in NFL history, Akers left the 49ers no choice after shanking 13-of-42 field-goal attempts last season. He narrowly avoided a handful of other misses. Akers' résumé is impressive enough that teams should be willing to ignore an off year, but at 38, he may not get a job until a team finds itself in a desperate situation.

FOX Sports reports "multiple teams" are "intrigued" by restricted free agent QB Brian Hoyer.

Reporter Peter Schrager believes Hoyer would have been the "hottest free-agent name on the market" had he been unrestricted, and made "multiple millions." That's fantastical for a 27 year old who's attempted just 96 career passes and spent three months on the street last season, but Schrager isn't the first to report Hoyer will draw interest. The Cardinals are believed to have interest in re-signing Hoyer, while he's been linked to the Browns.

The Sideline View's Adam Caplan expects the Browns to pursue one of Chase Daniel, Brian Hoyer and Matt Moore in free agency.

The Browns are serious about putting heat on 29-year-old sophomore Brandon Weeden, and any of Daniel, Hoyer or Moore would have a legit shot at beating him out in camp. The only player with any real experience, Moore's odds would obviously be the strongest, but Daniel's reputation has steadily grown as he's backed up Drew Brees. Hoyer is a restricted free agent, but shouldn't draw an imposing tender.

The Sideline View's Adam Caplan expects the Eagles to have "varying levels of interest" in free agent Jared Cook depending on his market.

Caplan considers Cook "perhaps the most intriguing free-agent skill position player I've seen on tape when it comes to being a fit for (Chip) Kelly's offense." The Eagles still have a dependable player in Brent Celek, but have vanishingly little depth behind him. Kelly likes to utilize tight ends in his offense.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells Profootballtalk "multiple" teams that run 3-4 defenses are interested in free agent DE Cliff Avril.

We already know one, as the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported Wednesday the Browns are interested in the soon-to-be former Detroit Lion. PFT's source doesn't name names, but with their ample cap space and need for pass rushers, the Colts are another good bet. Touted as scheme versatile by Lions GM Martin Mayhew, Avril likely wouldn't have much trouble converting to outside linebacker, which he played in college.

Jaguars released S Dawan Landry.

LaRon's brother signed a five-year, $27.5 million deal after the lockout, but was a disappointment in two years with Jacksonville. He graded out negatively in Pro Football Focus' ratings in each of 2011 and 2012, underwhelming against the run while intercepting just three passes. The Jags are so eager to move on they're willing to eat $3.9 million in "dead money," and only cleared $1.45 million in salary cap space. They're remaking former GM Gene Smith's broken roster from the bottom up.

Ravens released OG Bobbie Williams.

Per the Baltimore Sun, the Ravens are now $12.263 million under the salary cap. Williams, 37 in September, signed a two-year deal with the Ravens last offseason, and went on to start six games at left guard before losing his starting job to Jah Reid and then Kelechi Osemele. The move saves the Ravens $800,000 against the cap. This could be the end of the line for Williams' NFL career.

Bengals re-signed P Kevin Huber to a five-year contract.

A four-year veteran, Huber was fourth in net punting average at 42.0 yards last season. NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Bengals are also planning to re-sign LS Clark Harris.

Cardinals released SS Adrian Wilson.

The move saves $3 million in salary cap room. Wilson said in December that he didn't expect to be back for a 13th year in the desert, and he was right. The 2001 third-round pick is just one year removed from an elite campaign, but saw his play slip in 2012. Wilson was demoted out of nickel packages in November. With the safety market loaded with experienced talent, Wilson may have to wait a while for a new deal. He's going on age 34.

Chargers released SS Atari Bigby.

San Diego signed Bigby to a two-year deal last offseason. He started 11 games for the Bolts and racked up 68 tackles and three pass deflections before finishing the season on injured reserve with a groin injury. Bigby, 32, wasn't very good in coverage, and his market will likely be pretty lean in a deep free-agent safety class. The Chargers saved $1.5 million against the cap with the move.

Jaguars released CB Aaron Ross.

The move saves over $3 million in salary cap space. Ross was just one year into the three-year, $9.75 million pact he signed last March. He started nine games in 2012, but wasn't effective. Ross was benched twice, and didn't start after Week 13. By releasing Ross, the Jaguars have just Mike Harris and Kevin Rutland under contract at cornerback. They could be ready to spend in a deep corner market, or perhaps even draft Dee Milliner at No. 2.

Chargers released ILB Takeo Spikes.

New GM Tom Telesco is instilling a youth movement in San Diego, where they previously had 16 players at age-30 or older. Spikes had a base salary of $3 million and cap number of $3.7 million. The Chargers deemed that too much for a 36-year-old linebacker that had just 79 tackles in 16 starts last season. Spikes, who has played for five different teams in his 15-year career, has no intention of retiring. He'd still fit nicely as a locker room leader and reserve linebacker on a young team, preferably playing for about the league minimum.

The Raiders restructured SS Tyvon Branch's contract, clearing a little over $4 million in cap space.

Branch was set to earn a $6 million base in 2012, but the Raiders knocked it down to $715,000 and converted the rest into a "signing" bonus. Oakland tacked on two years to Branch's deal in the process, and he's now signed through 2017. Before the move, the Raiders were about $1.5 million under the cap.

Titans re-signed K Rob Bironas to a two-year, $6.675 million contract.

Bironas, 35, has been with the Titans for all eight seasons of his career, and he's never missed a game. Bironas made just 25-of-31 field goals in 2012, recording his worst single-season percentage since 2006. He has a strong leg, though, and has made 22-of-31 from 50-plus yards in his career. Bironas would be a better fantasy kicker if Jake Locker were a better NFL quarterback.

Bills re-signed LB Bryan Scott to a one-year contract.

Scott broke the news on his Twitter account. The safety-turned-nickel linebacker stuffed the stat-sheet in 2012, notching 67 tackles, four interceptions and two forced fumbles. It's doubtful Scott is bringing home any guaranteed money beyond 2013. He'll turn 32 next month.

Panthers released CB Chris Gamble.

The expected move creates $7.9 million in both cap space and cash savings. Gamble is still a fine cover corner, but was limited to four games by a shoulder injury last season. He's recovering from surgery, and is three days shy of his 30th birthday. The Panthers are left with one of the worst cornerback depth charts in the league, topped by Josh Norman and Josh Thomas. Gamble should draw healthy interest in free agency, but is entering a crowded corner market. A reunion with John Fox in Denver would make sense.

Saints re-signed OLB Junior Galette to a three-year contract.

Galette is viewed internally as a likely starter at rush 'backer in new coordinator Rob Ryan's 3-4. 25 years old and built to rush from a two-point stance at 6-foot-2, 258, Galette posted a career-high five sacks in 2012, operating mostly as a nickel end. He now has a chance to be an every-down player. The Saints' other OLB position will be up for grabs, with Martez Wilson as the leading in-house candidate. Victor Butler would be an intriguing free-agent pickup.

Cardinals released WR Early Doucet.

The move takes Arizona off the hook for Doucet's $1.95 million base salary, and saves $1.7 million under the cap. The Cardinals will keep Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Roberts, and Michael Floyd as their top-three receivers under Bruce Arians. Doucet, 27, has been an injury- and drop-prone disappointment in the pros.

Bills re-signed CB Leodis McKelvin to a four-year, $20 million contract.

McKelvin was the most explosive return specialist in football last season -- Jacoby Jones included -- but the money here is surprising and may indicate the Bills envision McKelvin as a 2013 defensive contributor. He's long struggled in pass coverage and with his ball skills. Turning 28 before the season, McKelvin will probably compete with Aaron Williams to start at left corner opposite RCB Stephon Gilmore. The LCB position figures to remain an exploitable weakness if Mario Williams and Mark Anderson can't generate better pass rush.

Redskins re-signed TE Logan Paulsen to a three-year contract with a max value of $7 million and a $1.1 million signing bonus.

Paulsen, 26, caught 25 passes for 308 yards and one touchdown in 16 games last season, starting ten after Fred Davis' Achilles' tear. Not much of a receiving threat, Paulsen is purely a possession target but excels in the run game, grading out as a top-ten run-blocking tight end according to Pro Football Focus. The re-signing of Paulsen should not impact negotiations with free agent Davis.

Buccaneers signed RB LeGarrette Blount to a one-year, $1.75 million contract.

The deal consists of a $1.25 million salary, $350,000 reporting bonus, and $150,000 workout bonus -- but no guaranteed money. Blount is a clear backup, but the fact that he signed this deal before even testing a weak running back market indicates agent laziness. He at least should've gotten a small signing bonus. With Doug Martin locked in as the Bucs' bellcow, Blount will again play a limited role if he makes the team. Last season, Blount played just 93 snaps.

FOX Sports' Alex Marvez reports the Ravens want Anquan Boldin to take a pay cut, or he will be released before Tuesday’s start of the free-agent period.

Boldin is owed a $6 million base salary, and the Ravens have seemingly deemed that too costly for a possession receiver. ILB Dannell Ellerbe is believed to be the Ravens' top priority in the wake of Joe Flacco's contract extension, and a pay cut for Boldin would free up even more cap space. Boldin quipped after the Ravens' Super Bowl win that he'd retire if the Ravens cut him. We're inclined to think that he might be reconsidering that stance.

Citing a source with "direct knowledge" of the Eagles' plans, CSN Philly reports the club is "interested in pursuing" free agent Danny Amendola.

In other words, this info isn't coming from an agent. Old Rams OC Pat Shurmur is now coordinating the Eagles' offense, and Chip Kelly's spread scheme floods the field with four wide receivers, including two in the slot. Beat writer Geoff Mosher concedes it's "unclear how hard" the Eagles will pursue Amendola, but he's definitely on their radar. Amendola is said to be seeking north of $6 million a year.

Rams will release SS Quintin Mikell.

Mikell graded out as a top-five safety in Pro Football Focus' 2012 ratings, but he's going on age 33 and was owed $6 million. The Rams do not value aging safeties enough to pay them that kind of coin. They now have needs at both safety spots and figure to pursue free agents like Louis Delmas, Kenny Phillips, Pat Chung, and Chris Clemons. Mikell should not lack for suitors because he can still play. He racked up 101 tackles, three sacks, and four forced fumbles last season.

Bengals re-signed DE Wallace Gilberry to a three-year, $6.75 million contract.

Gilberry was very productive as a situational pass rusher last season, compiling 6.5 sacks in 14 games. The former undrafted out of Alabama is back to fill the same role once again. It's a quality, cost-efficient move for the Bengals.

Giants signed DT Cullen Jenkins to a three-year, $8 million contract.

The deal includes $3 million guaranteed. Although Jenkins is wearing down at age 32, he still recorded 30 quarterback pressures and four sacks for the Eagles a year ago. In New York, he'll slide right in as a starter next to Linval Joseph, filling Chris Canty's shoes. Jenkins' arrival is a boost to a Giants pass rush that already has DEs Jason Pierre-Paul and Justin Tuck in place.

The Baltimore Sun reports the Colts and Browns will soon engage in a "bidding war" for free agent OLB Paul Kruger.

The Browns have been "particularly aggressive" on both Kruger and Cliff Avril since Saturday morning's negotiating window opened. One source predicted Kruger will command $10 million to $12 million per year. Both Cleveland and Indianapolis are flush with cap space and need pass-rush help. It's conceivable that the Kruger will go to the Colts and Avril to the Browns, or vice versa.

Bengals re-signed K Mike Nugent to a two-year contract.

Cincinnati opted for Nugent over Josh Brown, who kicked them to the playoffs last season. Nugent, 31, made 19-of-23 field goals last season before landing on injured reserve in Week 17 with a right calf injury. The Bengals have now re-signed all of their specialists.

Broncos released LB D.J. Williams.

This move was a no-brainer. Williams was due $6 million in the final year of his deal, and he wasn't going to be a starter in Denver anymore. The 30-year-old is coming off a multi-suspension season that saw him register just 14 tackles in seven games. Denver will move forward with Wesley Woodyard, Von Miller, and likely Nate Irving as their starting linebackers. The Redskins, Texans, Raiders, Falcons, and Ravens have been mentioned as possible Williams suitors.

Bucs CB Eric Wright is appealing the voiding of his guaranteed $7.75 million 2013 base salary.

When Wright signed with the Bucs last offseason, his 2012 and 2013 base salaries were guaranteed, but due to a PEDs suspension last year, that wiped out the guaranteed money on his deal. He's fighting it, but it's not likely he'll have much of a case. The Bucs are expected to release him before April's OTAs.

Cardinals informed RB Beanie Wells of his release.

Wells is only 24 and has never lacked for talent, but it's telling that the Cardinals cut him despite an affordable $1,407,500 base salary. Beanie is completely inept in the passing game and new coach Bruce Arians is a pass-first mind. The 31st overall pick in the 2009 draft, Wells' four-year Arizona career ends with one season of 200-plus carries, seemingly countless "nagging" injuries, and a pedestrian 4.0 YPC average. Wells will get another chance, but he's just another "guy" in a middling group of free-agent running backs.

The Cowboys have restructured DT Jay Ratliff's contract to clear salary cap space.

He converted $3.66 million of his salary into a bonus, saving $2.93 million. Ratliff was a rumored release candidate, but the restructuring likely locks him into a 2013 roster spot. A nose tackle in Dallas' old 3-4, Ratliff is tentatively expected to play "three technique" in Monte Kiffin's new 4-3 scheme.

Redskins DE Adam Carriker has restructured his contract and will return to the team in 2013.

Carriker was owed a $3.7 million base salary and $300,000 in offseason bonuses. He either took a pay cut (more likely) or simply moved money around (less likely) to free up salary cap space. Carriker, 29 in May, missed all but two games last season with a torn quadriceps tendon in his right leg. He'll likely return as the top backup to starting DEs Stephen Bowen and Jarvis Jenkins.

Cardinals re-signed S Rashad Johnson to a three-year contract.

Johnson drew decent free-agent buzz over the last couple of weeks, but the Cardinals always prioritized keeping him. He could be in line to start at strong safety after Adrian Wilson's release, though recent reports have the Cardinals chasing a top free-agent safety. Either way, Johnson is strong on special teams and would be a solid No. 3 safety capable of effective spot starts.

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the Seahawks are shopping KR/RB Leon Washington.

We could see this coming after the acquisition of Percy Harvin, who is just as potent in the return game. Washington has a $2.875 million cap number, and that's too expensive for a No. 3 running back who may or may not be used on returns. Washington, 30, finished second in the NFL with his 29.0 YPR average on kickoffs in 2012. He might be able to fetch a late-round pick.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution says free agent Steven Jackson is "coveted by" the Falcons, Lions, Bengals, Steelers, and Packers.

Pittsburgh, Atlanta, and Green Bay make a ton of sense as contenders, but the Bengals and Lions have yet to be connected to S-Jax. Cincinnati doesn't pay big for free agents and Detroit is committed to Mikel Leshoure as an early-down back, so they seem less likely. We still like the Falcons as Jackson's best fit.

A league source tells the Miami Herald neither CB Sean Smith nor LT Jake Long are a "certainty" to leave the Dolphins in free agency.

Corner and tackle are among the deepest positions in free agency, so it's not a surprise. Both players have been transparent about seeking top dollar, but the Dolphins could still end up the highest bidder depending on how the open market shakes out. Long is probably more likely to return than Smith.

According to ProFootballTalk.com, Peyton Manning "wants" free agent DE Dwight Freeney in Denver.

With Elvis Dumervil contract renegotiation talks going nowhere, this Freeney connection is becoming more than idle chatter between two old teammates. The Broncos could save upwards of $7 million if they cut Dumervil and sign Freeney to a $5 million per year deal. Per PFT, though Manning "has no plan to make a power play, he has a way of getting his point across."

In addition to the Broncos and Dolphins, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the Cardinals are interested in free agent Rashard Mendenhall.

We connected the Arizona-Mendenhall dots before based on his history with new Cardinals coach Bruce Arians, but this is the first substantive report. The Cards may envision Mendenhall as a fallback option should they miss out on free agent Reggie Bush. Mendenhall is 25 and played under Arians for four seasons.

Citing "several NFL sources," the New York Daily News reports the hangup in Victor Cruz's contract talks with the Giants is that Cruz wants to be paid like a No. 1 receiver.

Though Cruz outplayed him last year, the Giants consider "X-Iso" Hakeem Nicks their true No. 1. Cruz plays in the slot, considered a less valuable position in the league, and GM Jerry Reese seems to not believe he's worth the $11 million-per-year price tag top wideouts command. The Giants assigned Cruz a one-year, $2.879 million restricted tender and hold virtually all of the leverage.

Steelers re-signed restricted free agent RB Jonathan Dwyer to a one-year, $1.323 million contract.

Dwyer wasted no time inking the deal and "wanted to prove a point," according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. In his second season out of Georgia Tech, Dwyer rushed for 623 yards and two touchdowns on 156 carries. He had back-to-back 100-yard efforts in the middle of the season, but his play was inconsistent down the stretch. Dwyer enters the heart of the offseason as Pittsburgh's top back, but look for the Steelers to try and add some competition.

LOL, over the years the Ravens have let a lot of defensive free agents walk because teams have thrown a lot of money at them. Add Landry to the list of former Ravens that simply aren't the same with another team.

Its funny seeing all these teams make moves and knowing that barely a quarter of them will pan out.

but I like that it's not like the NBA....sign a player to a huge deal....doesn't work out....you're screwed for years. Why I also like that they got rid of the huge rookie deals.

People in Wisconsin are flipping out because the Packers aren't doing anything in terms of free agency. Are these people dumb? The Packers rarely try to make big moves in free agency. Ted Thompson builds through the draft. Are people not aware that most of these moves never pan out?
