My list used to be College FB, NFL, MLB, NBA.

Now I'm thinking more along the lines of College FB, MLB, NBA, NFL.

Yeah, the game had already been weighed down by excessive rules...this just adds a few more things refs can mess up and Phil Simms can mis-explain on TV. I'm with you on all this 'helmet-to-helmet' stuff...its basically impossible for a DB not to have a helmet-to-helmet hit on the WR. At some point, their helmets are going to touch. You can't dodge your head out of the way at the last minute (unless you have a neck like Merton Hanks).

Yes you hit helmets on every play but if its is deliberate then it is a penalty, If you are putting yor head down and using it as a battering ram than yes you should be fined.

That is not true, I play safety and I have not once put my head down on purpose to tackle someone. You can hit someone just as had by running your shoulder through them.

But whoever has coached you has done an absolutely pitiful job of it, Pure Tackling Technique teaches for the Tackler to put his head on the ball, which would insinuate that you would probably have to lead with your head. make contact, wrap up, and continue driving your feet while you pull the legs together.

Different Coaches will tell you different things, but the one thing EVERY coach teaches their players when they are teaching tackling technique, is to put your head on the ball, meaning you lead WITH your head.

And you honestly must be some kind of freak, because I have never heard of anyone saying you can hit someone just as hard throwing your shoulder into them rather then making your body as compact as possible and leading with your head like a missile.

That's like telling runningbacks to try and truck people with their shoulder, rather then covering the ball and lowering their head and shoulders and making their body as compact as possible with a forward movement... that's just the way the game is.

now the important part here is you see what I was originally talking about, he was going for the tackle textbook, what happened was he hit the guy so hard he didn't even get a chance to rap him up... the guy was on the ground before he could even bring his arms together.

Put this into a situation with the receivers in the act of catching a ball, or what constitutes a "defenseless receiver", and it fails... now that people aren't even allowed to lead with their shoulder... so many penalties are going to be called its going to get to the point where safeties will probably have to LET the receiver catch the ball, then attempt to make a tackle.

They could start going for knees and attempt flipping receivers instead... but then the NFL will make a rule that that should be illegal...

Its retarded... anyone who loves the game, and the history of the game feels the same way. Its football, its special because its so brutal, its special because its so violent and so dangerous, don't take away one of the most special parts of the game. whether its crack back blocks, or a Safety cleaning the clock of a receiver who wasn't keeping his head on a swivel.

The Legends who made the game that it is today are probably rolling over in their graves right now.

Now your talking about something different. You brought up the helmet to helmet rule fr the "defenseless receiver" you didnt bring up anything about tackling the ballcarrier which has nothing to do with the rule you are bitching about. But yes I did learn when tackling the ball carrier to put your head on the ball, but putting your head on the ball has nothing to do with a helmet to helmet hit.

That hit is still legal. He had his head up through the whole hit. And that hit is not affected by the rules at all. Idk what constitutes a defenseless receiver. I think its the same as a late hit but on a receiver but idk.

But yeah, if you are 2-3 inches taller than the guy you are tackling, what are you supposed to do then? Or what if you already leave your feet, on track to hit him in the torso, only he decided to lunge himself forward and lead with his helmet, resulting in a Cap Rooney like collision.

Who gets the flag when the offensive player goes helmet to helmet but manages to knock himself out?

i agree with userpikk. its a violent game. people just have to get over it and stop trying to make it safer cuz they are ruining a good part of the game. not to mention that i will hurt the way people see the game. a lot of people like to watch football so they can see some of the great hits. if thats taken away, some people might not watch anymore.

The violence of the game is why I PLAYED football...

it was the only sport available to me where I could basically physically destroy someone else and it would completely legal. and that's what made it special to me.

football is the greatest sport in the world to me because of the teamwork, intelligence, and overall brutal physicality of the game. but more and more they're making the game less physical, and it hurts to see that.

I understand trying to keep people safe... but if those people were that worried about being safe, they wouldn't be playing the sport in the first place, or they'd learn how to curl up in the fetal position like Marvin Harrison.
