Terrible game.

Butler had a lot of wide open looks from downtown that didn't go and while UCONN's size inside really bothered them but Butler still missed a massive amount of easy shots inside. They didn't make a LAYUP until there was 5:49 left in the game.

Sad thing is that even if Butler shoots only 25-30% from the field they more than likely win this game.

Yeah, as bad as Butler was, UConn wasn't much better. Kemba Walker didn't do anything. Stegall was the only Butler guy who could make a shot, and he sat out most of the 2nd half. The only thing I would have done differently was to use Marshall more and have him drive to the basket against UConn's slower big men. But UConn didn't really allow anything on defense.

Kemba fell in love with that crossover step back jumpshot when he pretty much could have gone by Vanzant whenever he wanted and gotten to the bucket. Everyone will cream themselves over each team playing defense but in the end and IMO Butler played much better defense than UCONN but couldn't get a shot go down to save their lives. UCONN's defense was good but Butler's pathetic shooting had more to do with them just missing shots than UCONN really doing anything to cause it(outside of bothering some shots inside with their size)

Andrew Smith is the worst seven footer I've seen in a while. Every Butler game I watch he's always the weakest link between both teams and constantly can't get rebounds at his size.

I think UConn's defense psyched out Butler. Butler had no inside game whatsoever, and they couldn't drive past UConn's defenders when they were out on the perimeter. The only way they could have loosened up UConn's defense was if they hit their 3's, and they couldn't. Mack couldn't do anything, Howard couldn't do anything...they had no answer for UConn's defense. My favorite play was when Mack drove inside, and Oriaki stood behind him. Mack faked once, faked twice, then got his shot stuffed by a standing-still Oriaki.

Smith was terrible against UConn, but he had been a pretty good banger and defender all tournament. It would have been nice if he could have made a few of those easy shots, but if Butler was depending on Smith to score, then they already lost the game. Howard missed a ton of easy shots as well, and Mack couldn't generate anything.

I don't know if they couldn't, didn't want to , or were running plays not designed to do so.

Once at halftime when he was talking about Butler's inability to get rebounds, he brought up how his players were in position just not tall enough. A second time after the game when he brought up how his guards were all 6'3 and under compared to UCONN who he said had 6'5 guys.

Something has to give, either he's going to have to start getting bigger players to come to Butler, or he'll have to bounce to a bigger school. His upcoming classes do seem to have a little more height though.
