I have been playing exclusively offline in career and exhibition mode to upgrade my stick skills for the game. Today, I feel like I finally had a breakthrough. I'm finally able to effectively transition off my back when I get taken down. My take down defense is getting better, but, at the higher difficulties it is much tougher. I had a back-and-forth 3 round battle against Matt Hughes as GSP. I finally won when I got a take down and transitioned to side control and just beat his face in.

Anyway, I am just wondering if anyone else is still "learning" how to play the game. For me, I think it has a pretty steep learning curve, but, I am enjoying the challenge. I have also found that some fighters just don't fit my skill-set yet (i.e. Lyoto Machida). However, some fighters I can have a lot of success with (i.e. GSP, Matt Hughes, Thiago Alves).

I also did the headline match and main even for tonight's PPV.

Matt Hughes (user) V Matt Serra (cpu)
Winner: Matt Hughes - KO 2nd

Lyoto Machida (user) V Rahad Evans (cpu)
Winner: Rashad Evans - TKO 2nd

I enjoyed playing the Hughes/Serra match a lot more. It was a much more technical match. A lot of reversals and ground work. The Machida/Evans match was pretty much a slug-fest. I was lucky to make it out of the 1st with Machida. Evans was just eating me up and I couldn't do much against him.

If you push the L-stick towards the opponent and press a kick or punch button it will be harder.

Oh...yeah I have no clue about that. I was just able to start getting off my back in matches today. I'm not really good. Still learning and improving.

Machida's a weird ass fighter in real life though too. He tries not to get hit at all, while still inflicting a lot of damage to his opponent. That's probably why your fight never went to the ground because Machida's takedown/clinch defense is incredible.

I'm having a bit of trouble with the ground transitions though.. like going from bottom guard to top mount or top side control. Is that with the R-Stick and the left buttons?

If you whip the guy and knee him in the face, it inflicts about 33 damage... as opposed to a head kick which inflicts about 48 when you catch him unblocked. But you can get a lot more consecutive knees than you can head kicks obviously if you have a good clinch. To answer your question, I don't think there is a modifier though. I think the knee to the face is the most powerful move from the clinch.

You can check all of those numbers out in practice mode.

Just with the R-stick. At least that is my understanding anyway. I just push up and to the left on the R-stick and swing it around and hold it. Usually that gives me some control and then I can move out of it if I am on my back. If I have my opponent on his back it usually helps me to gain even greater position on them.

I'll have to hit up practice mode and see what I can do. I'm good at getting out of bottom guard and standing the fight up, but I'd much rather perform a sweep and mount the guy.

I have been able to do that on a few occasions, however, that was purely based off of luck and my fighters ratings. It certainly wasn't intentional on my part. I have been able to pull it off with GSP and Thiago Alves.

I'm really enjoying this game which is odd considering I'm not much of a UFC or MMA fan. We have it on display at work and I've just been playing the hell out of it. Still feel like I'm kinda "cheesing" because most of my matches are just slugfests but I'm attempting take downs and subs and stuff.

Actually I just checked it out... a right knee to the face from the clinch is 44 damage (left knee is 39). That's REALLY powerful considering you can pull off 3 or 4 in succession fairly easily.

The head kick is 48. I haven't found one that's better... flying knee is 43, just trying out others now. I noticed if you're on the bottom in the ground fighting, if you're holding the guy's head you only receive 4 damage from punches, but if the guy is free you receive about 25... so hold that head down!!

lol cool! so i guess the muay thai clinch really is deadly, if u can keep the guy in the clinch.

damn i made my guy for the vsn ultimate fighter a kickboxer but i can deal with it

and ill hold the guys head down when im on the ground for sure then, unless im on the top! xD (sounds kinda wrong lol)

lol that was funny i was playing someone online and like always iam GSP and 20 seconds in i grapple him and throw him to the ground ref calls the fight i got hit just 3 times in the chest

What kind of moves do Judo fighters know? i do Judo in real life so I wondered what they do..

They have an assortment of trips from the clinch. Getting a nice throw is always nice
