so do we go and get another FA or 2??
i thinking maybe a DB or OL....

I think DB at the most, but it seems they are happy with the way the roster is constructed now. I can see us using a lot of pressure and blitz to mask the secondary being a weakness. The Hatcher addition and the addition of multiple ILB's who are known to hit hard and take up blockers means the rush is going to be a big part of what we do defensively.

As for the offensive line, that's been the area where we've seen the most movement this off-season I think, right there with linebacker. I don't see the need for more linemen at this point.

true.....good points.
i just dont know if we can trust our DBs in coverage if we dont get a vast improvement with a pass rush this year.

but
i suppose if we can score 35+ points per game; it might not matter that much; lol.

Just had that same conversation with a friend of mine yesterday. I definitely think we use the offense to get ahead early, and grind the clock down in the second half. We have an offense that has the potential to strike from anywhere at anytime, so that's going to be a point in our favor.

I am still worried about the defensive backs, but barring a trade, that group is set I think. Nothing we can do now except pray they somehow play well.

A second man has been convicted in connection with the shooting death of former Redskins safety Sean Taylor.

Jason Mitchell, the man believed to be the ringleader of a botched home invasion at Taylor's residence in November 2007, was convicted of first-degree felony murder and armed burglary on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.

Mitchell was sentenced to life in prison following the conviction, according to the Miami Herald. Mitchell's sentence comes seven months after accomplice Eric Rivera was convicted of second-degree murder. Rivera, 23, was sentenced to 57 years in prison for the part he played in Taylor's death.

Mitchell is believed to have masterminded the plan to rob Taylor's home. The belief was that Taylor, a Washington safety, would be out of town at a Redskins game during the Nov. 26, 2007 home invasion, but Taylor was actually at home due to an injury.

Taylor confronted the multiple intruders at his residence and ended up getting shot in the leg. The bullet severed Taylor's femoral artery, a mortal wound that caused Taylor to bleed to death.

Robert Barrar, Mitchell's lawyer, said that his client should only have faced a burglary charge because he wasn't responsible for killing Taylor. Rivera is believed to have pulled the trigger.

Assistant State Attorney Reid Rubin said it was Mitchell's plan, so he's the guy to blame, "It doesn't matter whether they planned to kill him (Taylor) or intended to kill him, he died as a result of that burglary and they are all responsible for it," Rubin told the 12-person jury in closing arguments. "At the center of it all was Jason Mitchell."

Besides Rivera and Mitchell, two other men still await trial for Taylor's death while another man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and burglary.

Good fuck both of those guys. Next time earn your own shit instead of stealing it from someone who worked hard for it.

They deserve every bit of it. Since they brought guns with them, they should be prepared to be fired upon and/or suffer the consequences if they use them. Taylor is dead, they are spending most of their lives in jail.

So Belichick proposed the idea of Redskins-Patriots practices this year, and Gruden said yes. I think they are a good idea in theory, but I have a feeling Belichick is trying to get a free scouting report up close and personal with Kirk Cousins.

Though he signed a four-year deal worth as much as $27.5 million this offseason, it'll be a while before defensive end Jason Hatcher can get back on the field for the Redskins.

Hatcher, who's coming off a career-high 11 sacks last season for the Cowboys, will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Thursday. He's supposed to miss 4-6 weeks, meaning he might not be ready in time for the beginning of training camp.

"It's old stuff, man," Hatcher said, via the Washington Times. "I don't know a particular play, but I don't want to go into the season 80 percent. I want to be 100, so I can be the best Hatch for this football team, for this defense, so I can help our team get better."

Hatcher had participated in most of the team's OTAs this offseason, but he recently complained of pain and swelling. It wasn't clear when Hatcher hurt himself.

"We don't feel like it's a long-term thing," Redskins coach Jay Gruden said. "Any time you have a surgery there's a little bit of a concern. But I think from what I'm told, the severity of it is not that great…There was no major damage in there whatsoever."

that could be just scraping/cleaning up some old scar tissue......
i know a few guys that are 40+ and had that done.
were able to get back in 6-8 weeks for the "old man hoops games" that we been doing for like 20+ years.

so - it could nothing or could be more than what they saying.

Imagine what it'd be like for your dad to be one of the greatest receivers of all time and then you try to make the NFL in the exact same position with the exact same name. Welcome to the world of Jerry Rice Jr., who signed with the Redskins on Thursday.

Rice, who played his college career at UCLA and UNLV, had tryouts this offseason with the Ravens and the 49ers (can you imagine what kind of pressure Rice Jr., would have faced in San Francisco if he made the team?). Ultimately, he didn't catch on with either squad.

But now he has a chance in Washington, which already has a solid receiving corps with the newly-signed DeSean Jackson, Pierre Garcon, Aldrick Robinson and Andre Roberts. So, it seems that Rice will have a tough time making the team. But hey, at least he has a chance.

Definitely a practice squad candidate, possibly more depending on how well his pre-season goes.

Tanard Jackson suspended indefinitely by the NFL for once again violating the substance abuse policy. He just torpedoed his career :natsplayoffs:

Heard that come across Twitter......Some things in life are guaranteed, like death, taxes and Tanard Jackson getting suspended for reefer.

Pretty good breakdown of what we have at cornerback. Good potential, but that's all that is there. I still think they will only be as good as the pass-rush is. Safety is going to be the weakest spot though.

Let’s take a look at the cornerbacks, because there should be a pretty good competition for jobs there this summer.

David Amerson — The 2013 second-round pick likely moves into a starter’s role this season, after showing promise as a rookie. One of the knocks on him fresh out of college was a propensity to guess and get beat deep, and we didn’t see that last year, while we did see the ballhawking at least once, in the Oakland game.

E.J. Biggers — Was useful as an extra corner and even started a game at safety last season. But they drafted a corner, have another coming back from injury, and signed a former starter with experience, so it’s hard to read into what his role might be this season. Jim Haslett and staff re-signed him in free agency, but on a low-risk one-year deal.

Bashaud Breeland — Draft picks usually stick, especially players who were taken in fourth but might have been seen as first-round talent with another year of college seasoning. Breeland’s a pro now, and his initial role might be special teams, but he’s envisioned as a high-ceiling player as he develops.

Courtney Bridgett Jr. — Undrafted rookie out of Hampton will have to impress in camp. He is 6-3 and 195, but ran a 4.58 40 at his pro day.

Richard Crawford — Looked good as a punt returner and spot corner in 2012, but got hurt in the 2013 preseason and missed the entire year. Mike Jones detailed what he’s facing this season in a blog post last week.

DeAngelo Hall — Team’s unquestioned No. 1 corner hopes to become a vocal leader with London Fletcher now gone. He’s shown a knack for big plays and elevated his game in key matchups, but the metrics crowd is split on his effectiveness — Pro Football Focus ranked him as the NFL’s 59th-best coverage corner last season, three spots behind Amerson and seven ahead of Porter. Advanced Football Analytics had him fourth in win probability added.

Chase Minnifield — He seemed like a diamond in the rough when the Redskins snagged him. An untimely injury sent Minnifield from high-round talent to undrafted, and he hurt himself again as a pro. He finally stayed healthy last season, on the practice squad, but as he enters Year 3, he’s got to show some progress to earn a roster spot and a role.

Tracy Porter — Signed to play nickel, the corner who returned a Peyton Manning INT for a touchdown to clinch the Saints’ Super Bowl win after the 2009 season is on his fourth team in four years. Yet, he played 16 games for Oakland last year and had 12 passes defensed and two interceptions. Could become a starter, but team would probably prefer he only start in a pinch.

Bryan Shepherd — A 5-10, 180-pound rookie out of North Dakota State, Shepherd would likely be in the mix for a special teams or practice squad job.

Peyton Thompson — Spent 2012 season on the Falcons practice squad and was cut by Atlanta last August. The 5-11, 180-pound player has yet to appear in a regular-season game.

i can see Amerson being moved to FS/S

I thought that too, but at 6-1, 205 he brings much needed size at CB to match up against opposing receivers. I don't think you can give that up. Maybe next year if Philip Thomas proves to be a flop, but not right now.

Almost time for training camp!

Vacation has come to an end. It’s time to get to work again.

The Washington Redskins on Wednesday report to Richmond – the place they will call home for the next 20 days as they lay the foundation for the 2014 season during training camp.

In the past month, we’ve taken a look at a number of players to watch during camp, in all three phases of the game.
Today, we go over key areas to monitor on offense. Tomorrow, we’ll dig further into the defense, and Wednesday we’ll tackle special teams.

1. Gruden’s stamp – The first-year head coach took steps toward molding the team in his image during the offseason as Washington added more speed at the skill positions, and more size along the offensive line. He introduced a new offense – a blend of plays from his own offense and the best pages of the Redskins’ offense from 2012 and 2013. In reality, according to players, because both Gruden and former coach Mike Shanahan come from the West Coast Offense family tree, the offense will still look largely the same. But some terminology will change, as will some tactical philosophies. The players express encouragement over how the offseason introductory course to the offense went. Now, Gruden and offensive coordinator Sean McVay will tinker and experiment and try to figure out exactly how they want things to look.

2. Griffin’s rebound – Although he must oversee the entire rebuilding process as Washington tries to rebound from a 3-13 campaign and return to the ranks of the contenders, Gruden’s chief task involves helping franchise quarterback Robert Griffin III reclaim the magic from his rookie season, and exceed that level of play. Physically, the young quarterback – now 19 months removed from his 2013 right knee reconstruction – has fully returned to form. Now, it’s about sharpening his mental tools, improving his understanding and feel for the game and helping him become a more complete passer. Gruden and McVay this camp will continue to work to help Griffin become more accurate while also tutoring him on how to more quickly read and react to defenses. Team officials have upgraded the pieces around the quarterback, and now they need him to take his unit to another level.

3. Quarterback-coach relationship – In addition to fixing Griffin’s game, Gruden and McVay must ensure that trust between coaches and quarterback is – and remains – fully restored. Somewhere along the way as he injured his knee, went through surgery and rehab, Griffin lost faith in Mike Shanahan and Kyle Shanahan. Despite sit-downs between the parties involved, things never truly improved. The season ended with the Shanahan camp leaking damning reports to the media about the quarterback, and with Griffin telling teammates that the Shanahans didn’t like him. Owner Daniel Snyder and general manager Bruce Allen believe that Gruden’s style, approach, youth and experiences as a former quarterback will help restore order in that coach-quarterback relationship. So far, Griffin has praised Gruden for his communication skills, leadership style and vision for himself and the offense. Gruden, meanwhile, has praised Griffin’s approach to the game and willingness to learn. We’ll see how this marriage progresses during the heat of training camp, and if Griffin struggles during the preseason or early in the regular season.

4. Fitting in the new pieces – The offense this season will feature three new starters in wide receiver DeSean Jackson, fellow wideout Andre Roberts (when they open games in frequently-used three-receiver sets) and left guard Shawn Lauvao. It’s four if you count Kory Lichtensteiger, who moved from left guard to center. Some other roles will adjust, as second-year tight end Jordan Reed is expected to take on a larger role. The offseason practices introduced everyone to the changes, and helped coaches get a feel for the new players’ capabilities. In training camp, these players will truly define their roles. How will Jackson and Roberts complement returning No. 1 pass-catcher Pierre Garcon? Will the addition of Lauvao and switch for Lichtensteiger spark improvement out of Griffin’s line? Meanwhile, draft picks Morgan Moses (tackle), Spencer Long (guard), Lache Seastrunk (running back), Ryan Grant (wide receiver) and Ted Bolser (tight end) will try to carve out slots on the depth chart and possibly push veterans for playing time.

5. Position battles – The Redskins have few jobs up for grabs on offense. But they do have a number of players competing for spots in the rotations at wideout and running back, and others vying for slots on the depth chart along the line. The Redskins need to figure out who is best suited for the third-down back role behind workhorse Alfred Morris. Fourth-year players Roy Helu Jr. and Evan Royster, second-year pro Chris Thompson, Seastrunk and undrafted rookie Silas Redd all will compete for this job. At wide receiver, a slew of players including long-time veteran Santana Moss, youngsters Aldrick Robinson and Leonard Hankerson (once fully recovered from anterior cruciate ligament surgery) and undrafted rookie Cody Hoffman will try to earn roster spots.

The receiver battle is definitely a position to watch, but the offensive line is where most of my attention is going to be. I wasn't impressed with who we've brought in so far (except Long) and I want to see what combinations are put together.
