Here is my oh-so-humble opinion on this next generation:

Why is Microsoft doubling down on this TV stuff? Because they see the writing on the wall with the future of gaming...meaning, we're heading for another crash like after the Atari 2600. The user base is so huge with the 360 that they know they can't abandon it like they did with the original Xbox. People my age, and even a little younger look at the 360 and say, "Why the hell do I need anything new?"

I wouldn't even consider buying a new system until this one is nearly obsolete....unless it gives me a reason to buy it. Games will still be produced for years. It still plays movies and streams my music. Disconnecting from my cable provider is a pretty good reason, though.

Parents in 2013, especially those who weathered the recession and are much more financially responsible now, will be very wary of buying any new $600 system. How much will the games cost? $80? Too much. Why not stick with what they have?

This new generation of consoles is doomed. There is no need for it now, no matter how cool it is.

Its almost 8 years old...name one piece of electronic equipment in your house that is 8 years old and still functional besides you TV. The xbox is the oldest piece of equipment I have in my entertainment center and it shows.

Honestly I have basically stopped using the thing except for Forza since getting more into PC gaming. The gaming on the PC just kills it.

Especially playing an superior version of Hitman for $5...:smh:

I've been saying that for months now. I'm one of the biggest game geeks on this site and I'm actually waiting for quite a while before buying one of these new consoles. But with ever rising developments costs, the economy being in the shitter (Thanks Obama! ) and people just not spending money on games like they used to, we're in serious trouble. I really think they should've waited a few more years at least.

having played tons of games with people on both consoles, i can easily verify that more people on 360 use their mics... as for the XBL vs PSN, i assume he is talking about the great outage of 2011, as well as what seems like monthly maintenance that brings the network down for hours or sometimes a day or two...

PSN may be as dependable as Live now but that has not always been a true statement. Also from MY expiereince NOT yours I run into more people with mics on xbox then PS3. Is it possible that its different for you? Yes it is, so no its not a horseshit statement. I'm not here to be in a pissing contest with you so we will just have to agree to disagree. I prefer xbox live over PSN but I do play multiplayer games on both platforms.

I know Swarley can back me up on this. Were there more people on mics for the first several years of the 360 in comparison to the PS3? Yup, because the mics came free with the console. Then they stopped doing that and you started noticing things evening out. Now, even though they brought the mics back (at least I believe they did) you still see the same chatter, or lack thereof on both consoles.


I play Battlefield on PS3 all the time. In every game there are at least a handful of randoms that are talking. The last time I played Bf3 on 360 it was a ghost town. I was screaming for people to communicate but got no response. That's just one recent example. Maybe the almighty party chat is to blame? You know, that feature that Xbots love to suck off as being God's gift to gaming? Maybe it's because all of these clowns would rather trade recipes with each other in their private parties than actually communicate within the game? I'd be willing to bet that's a large part of it.

As long as companies like Valve exist (hell, as long as Steam just exists), gaming will be fine.

I don't think it is an easy implication to keep costs down and people dont buy new expensive systems to play old games. The 360 and will be < $150 at some point...if you want to play dem old games buy a 360...or ps3.

They're both already supporting indie developers. Sony is certainly talking an awesome game right now as far as indie's are concerned, but we'll see what the end result is. MS has spent basically the lifespan of the 360 making themselves into the asshole friend that nobody wants to hang out with anymore in the eyes of indies. It's a matter of, can Sony back up what they say, and can MS take their head out of their ass? Granted, there is a TON more into it on their ends that Steam mostly doesn't even have to worry about, but let's not act like that's what's going to fix everything. They will NEVER be able to match the freedom of Steam, so looking for the indies to save them isn't going to help, and they're never going to make enough money or feel secure enough to let the indies just do whatever they like. They have way too much more at stake.

I will never get this argument. I've never played a PS2 game on my PS3 because it isn't backwards compatible, and I never cared...that's what my PS2 is for. The TWO times I used an XBOX game on my 360 it was dogshit. That is money TOTALLY wasted in manufacturing which then gets passed on to the consumer and becomes yet another reason to not buy because it's too expensive.

The one thing I could somewhat see myself behind is my XBLA and PSN games, just because they're so damn easy to pick up and play. But it's the same tech problem in the end, and I'd rather just play it on something I already have than spend more money on something new...so I can also use it as something that I already have.

Yes I am sure they will try and sell/download you previous gen games...but your discs wont work. Keep you 360/PS3.

If Sony or MS tries some bullshit where they say that the DRM expires once you transfer your PSN/Live subscription over to the new console, meaning I lose access to all those games, I'll be furious. Or if Sony says that PS+ will only be active on the PS4 and all the games I've received from that will be dead. :runaway:

I'm also curious as to how long they will even support these consoles? What if I decided I never want a PS4 or Xbox One? Will I be able to just keep renewing my PS+ and Live subscriptions for several more years? I highly doubt it.

PS+ I wouldn't necessarily be shocked to see them yank from you, but anything you purchased I just can't imagine them doing anything worse than simply saying "If you want to play those games, they will only work on your 360/PS3". For as many dumb things as game companies do, that would honestly be stealing just for the sake of being a dick. "Hey, we took all your games that you can't play on the NEW console and also made it so you can't play them on the OLD console!"

But who the hell knows. I am as prepared to be shocked by their behavior as I am prepared for all of this to be a lot of internet bluster over nothing much.

Just throwing it out there, Steam was absolutely terrible and hated when it first came out. Everyone cried it was the end of gaming on computers. Their servers went down constantly, connections timed out, had to be online just to play an offline game etc etc etc and then they pulled their shit together. I still don't agree with their VAC permanent ban policy but they've gotten much better in the past 5 years or so.

I believe it was DoD and CS 1.6 that were the main games involved in the switch to Steam and Half Life 2 was the first major release on Steam.
