There's an ISP here that loses internet connectivity at least once a month for days at a time. Hundreds of people, occasionally thousands, lose their internet for up to three or four days, at times a week. This is in a college town. There is nothing these residents can do, because it's the only ISP on that side of town.

Well, a lot of people are acting like the internet connectivity and internet speed issues are not problems anywhere in the United States. There are, and Microsoft is giving these long-standing customers a big "fuck you".

blacksburg is a different story: comcast and cox are the two largest ISP's in the area, and VT won't let them in for w/e reason, so if you want to blame anyone, blame your school... i live less than 30 minutes away from you and get 25/5 from comcast for $25 a month...

I have Comcast and love it. They were in the process of buying AM3's lines last year but they never completed the transaction. Virginia Tech couldn't give two shits what ISP is offered in the area.

With that said, by the end of Xbox One's life cycle, I'm sure a lot of connectivity issues will be fixed across the nation. Microsoft keeps saying that the XBO is a future-proof device. I guess internet connectivity issues being fixed is what they're banking on.

Who is acting like this? I think MS is fully aware of the internet capabilities of the US. If you don't have internet then it wont work along with any other product that needs internet to work.

I would think the PS4 and Xbox would feel like dead weight without being connected to the internet.

Yea that's shentel affectionately referred to as shitel for their shit service. I had them for 2 years. My Internet would randomly go out at 9pm every now and then and be gone for a day or two. They cover all of SW Virginia and parts of West Virginia, in other words Hickville USA. The only people effected will be Atlas and Steeljake

shentel only gets the smaller, rural areas... comcast or cox has most of SW VA with shentel in little pockets of shitty towns like radford, bburg, pulaski and the like... comcast has been available here for as long as ive lived here... :lesmug:

Exactly JMS. Sure, MS could be a little more PR friendly about it, but at the end of the day I think a) most of the people bitching about it are connected 24/7 and are just bitching to bitch; and b) if you think it will be a problem...don't buy it. Problem solved.

I don't know. I have an xbox now and love it but I have some concerns about the new xbox that I do not have with the new PS. I'm almost 50, like Garrett, and don't really need to put up with this $hit, so to speak. I have a couple of concerns that will make me look into the new PS; they are:

1) If I want an online device, I have a phone, an Ipad, my laptop, and my freaking TV, for Christ sake. Why does my xbox have to be connected or "check in" once per day. What exactly is the rationale for doing this? Setting aside the discussion over internet availability, does my xbox need to check in so they can download my activity (web surfing, music selections, movies, search results, etc.) so they can try and sell me more stuff? Sound like MS is looking to data mine their users (and they are now) and make a profit off of the data....Any other reason why the xbox needs to be connected?

1A) I do go on vacation to Lake George yearly in Upstate NY and the internet service is spotty at best. If I want to play offline, am I going to have a problem?? So it sounds like I need my current xbox since it functions as an "offline device"

2) Used Games: They are screwing thier coporate partner Gamestop, who I buy used games from. I have 2 kids, aged 5 and 6, and they are now starting to play games like Minecraft, skylanders, lego adventure games, so used games are a great way for me get them some cheap entertainment. I have looked at the downloadable games and they are more expensive than games on a disc (physical copy) so why would I want MS to implement more controls over used contenet? I want the kids to be able to trade games w/ their friends and play on thier friends consoles (I'll have at least 2 in the next year or two) - I live in an apt. building so the kids can go upstairs to a friends apt and play, but not so on the new Xbox where they would need a code(?) to activate the game. If so, I'm not a supporter of this....

I'm of the generation that started with the Playstation (and I owned a Sega Genesis before that) so switching back doesn't scare me one bit (except for the fact the Sony online network keeps getting hacked) and I would like to see what Gran Turismo has turned into during my 15 year absence. MS better wake up, not only are they selling to me, but my 2 kids as well. Do they want the kids to have fond memeories of playing games on an Xbox or a PS?? Decision is theirs....

Oh, not that it is a huge deciding factor, but is it true that the Xbox is noticeably less powerful and the price point is higher than the new PS? I saw some coverage but I wan't sure if that is speculation or fact????

Having to be connected online all the time I THINK has to do with their new cloud based accounts and gaming. Since your whole family and friends can have access to your games library they want to check in and make sure nothing fishy is going on with this feature.

You cant play games on the xbox offline for more than 24 hours....I think. Not sure how this will work. If you are hotlapping in forza and your connection drops, what happens?

Xbox and PS4 have similar hardware specs. The games will most likely be the same like this generation with PC games performing better in about a year.

Short answer: Digital Rights Management (DRM). They like to spin it by saying Cloud a bunch, but at the end of the day, it's just another way for them to make sure you aren't taking a game, installing it, beating it, and selling it/give it away. At least -- I think. The going theme of my responses is, MS is really bad at clarifying what any of their shit does.

In some cases, they're super coy saying certain outlets would be able to provide games and that some sort of "buyback" will be in effect if you want to trade your old game in. But then there's the "only can be gifted once" thing, which I feel like would limit the buyback, unless there is a way for these "select outlets" to wipe the memory? It's super confusing and unclear still, and with every new presser they sound douchier and less clear. One thing that does sound kind of cool, and strangely totally against the rest of their supposed restrictions, is that up to 10 members of your "friends and family" can play games that you own on THEIR Xbox through the Cloud. I think you have to be connected at the same time though? Their jargon on that, shockingly, hasn't been clear either.

It's really the only aspect of the "always on" thing that bothers me (well, that and, what the fuck is MS going to do when their servers crash on national CoD day and I can't connect?). Just like you said in your post...WTF happens if my connection drops at 11:59PM, the check is at 12, and I'm in the middle of a game? I assume they would have some sort of window, but the ideal thing to do would be that your 24 hour "window" starts the second you disconnect, no matter what. Which makes the idea of a check in, super dumb. Can I check myself in to avoid that problem?
