Packers will release Al Harris Monday

Just to update Al Harris did clear waivers today. That means the Packers are on the hook for the 2.5 mil remaining contract salary this season, and Harris is free to sign with the Vikings for the veteran minimum.

I'm guessing the decision to release Harris wasn't made until the last few days.. but it's hard not to take Harris' side considering the severity of the injury, and the VERY high likelihood that the team may have decided to move on without him MONTHS ago.

Letting Harris go made absolutely no sense. The Packers have plenty of cap room and keeping Harris for $2.5M is a great insurance policy going into the playoff run. Same thing as the Saints needing to resign Mike McKenzie last fall when Sharper was hurt.

Oh please.....decided months ago. That's why they kept him on PUP instead of releasing him, allowing him the time to recover on there dime, had him practicing for the full amount of allowable time after PUP, giving Harris a lot of reps at nickel (according to Harris). Sure, that sounds like they made up there minds months ago.

Sounds more like they gave Al EVERY CHANCE to recover and make the team. Sound like they took things to the very last day for AH to crack the roster.

An injury so extensive that no one in the history of the NFL has every come back from. He wasn't going to beat out T. Williams or Shields (at nickel). Al also doesn't and wouldn't be able to play special teams.

GB have him the opportunity to rehab on there dime, every opportunity to make it back on the roster. They did what was best for Al and GB by waiving him. He can now find a team he would make it out onto the field for.

I'm just guessing, but I am going to guess they didn't already know their plans that far in advance. It sounds from reports that Harris was given opportunity over the past couple weeks of practice to show what he had and failed to impress.

His comments make no sense to me.

To be honest I am not really sure what the big deal is or why he would be bitter in the slightest. He got hurt, the packers paid him a pretty nice salary to not play and allow him to rehab. He got back, wasn't no longer a fit or atleast they felt he was no longer capable of playing at the level he was playing, and they are allowing him to move on while still having to pay him. I would think if anything, Harris would be happy that they let him go somewhere he can get playing time. Wouldn't it piss him off more if they just buried him on the depth chart?

I guess he could be bitter about the studying, but really at $2.5 mil I could care less. Its your job.


Look, I am no longer the TT fan I once was. And I certainly am not an MM fan. I wouldn't put it past them to mislead someone. Especially TT. That guy has ice in his veins. He doesn't feel or understand emotions. But sometimes I think people reach REALLY hard to make them look bad because they are an easy target. I believe this is one of those cases. Unless there are things we don't know, I honestly can't look at this situation and see anything TT or MM did wrong. If anything I thought they handled the situation to Al's benefit.

I guess we'll see if Harris has any gas in the tank. He just signed a one year deal with the Dolphins. If he plays decently and the Packers end up needing a DB down the stretch, it will go down as a stupid move to release him. Even if the Packers didn't need him, the locker room presence and instruction he could have provided the younger DB's is more than worth the $2.5M that they ended up having to eat anyway since he cleared waivers. TT didn't bank on him clearing waivers so that backfired on him.

Time will tell who has their head in their backside.

Really? I'd like to see that proven. I highly doubt that. He's 36 coming off quite possibly the most severe knee injury possible and has a $2.5 mil salary. Everyone and their grandma knew he would clear waivers. If TT honestly didn't think he would, hes dumb and should be fired on the spot cause he clearly lacks common sense. I still think this was a simple case of we no longer had a need for Al so TT allowed him to go and play elsewhere.

Other than that, I don't necessarily disagree with anything you said. My argument was never that the move may or may not blow up in our face. ANY move can blow up in your face. TT will look like a moron if we go through a rash of injuries in the secondary. But if we don't, Al sits the bench the rest of the way which I'm sure he would not have been pleased about.

Disagreed. What if we never need him? I'm going to reach out on a limb here and guess that Al Harris is a competitor and wants to play. If he doesn't have the opportunity to do that here (right or wrong), is it classy to keep him around and bury him on the bench? I don't get that logic one bit.

Multiple teams negotiating with him after the fact in no way indicates that there was interest in claiming him on waivers. No one was going to pay $2.5 mil for a 36 year old coming off a horrendous knee injury without seeing him work out. You were pretty much alone in your thinking there. Like I said, it was common sense that he wasn't getting claimed.

There may be more too it that we don't know. As I said earlier, from what we do know, I can't fathom why Harris is pissed. Debatable. We don't know where Al's knee is at. Pat Lee plays sepcial teams. Al can't. Not sure Al is at 75% or that would be better than Lee (who plays special teams).

Per Harris' comments above, seems like he feels jaded beacuse he was 'led on' by the organization. I have a real hard time disagreeing, personally. This was a catastrophic knee injury, he's 35, and it seems like the organization could have made the decision to cut bait with him months ago

This is what I don't get. What would have been the point? Why would this matter? He was rehabbing. Whats the difference if it was on our roster or not? Someone who feels this way needs to explain this to me.

Keeping Harrell, who was active for week 1, cost the packers Anthony Toribio.

Had they kept Toribio, the Packers wouldn't have had to scramble to find a player to take some pressure off Raji.

Please, a healthy Harrell is a better player than a healthy Torbio. So you would suggest that TT cut a better player in order for us to have Torbio's incredible production?
