You're going to have to bring some evidence to back that statement up. A) you need to prove that gaming is "ruined" or in that process. B) you need to prove how hackers are responsible for this.

At this point, I'm not convinced that either is the case. At least in regards to PS3.

You said this isn't a big deal. I think that it is a bigger deal than you think, maybe not to PSN, but to Sony and gaming as a whole.

As I laid it out earlier, this particular PS3 hack is not as bad for Sony as it could be. It's not an easy hack and pirated PS3 games are not in abundance. This hack is more about bragging rights and the (quite small, at least for PS3) subset gamer community that is into this kind of stuff is still going to be buying games and systems. Systems to hack, and games to crack.

It's not like they broke into the PS Store and can download all the games with impunity.

i dont think pirating is stealing. you think it is and i disagree. other countries do not have the same laws on copyright material. people are allowed to share files. if others are able to benefit from their ability to share, then so be it.

personally i am not concerned about a small percentage of people who get games for free. I am more concerned with the raping and pillaging of the average gamer who has to spend $60 on a game, and then pay another $15 for some DLC to be unlocked on the disc. what about the online passes that destroyed peoples ability to buy used games and killed off an entire market for people who dont want to pay full price. what about a company like nintendo or apple that forces people to buy all sorts of add on periphrasis to use their console or devices.

I suppose all this is ok because its just free enterprise right? well i think its morally wrong for corporations to lobby our government to make laws that are unconstitutional and invade my right to privacy. I think its morally wrong for greedy executives to force out a slew of bad repeat sequels to make a profit so the bottom line looks good to the shareholders. I think its morally wrong for CEO's to pad their stats to get big bonuses and cash in stock options while 30,000 employees get layed off when the shit hits the fan.

FWIW I've bought a couple of PC games I've downloaded because I liked the game when I played it and wanted to be able to take advantage of the full version for things like patches and multi-player.

People have been ripping games for at least 13 years to my personal knowledge and last I checked they are still making games for consoles and PCs. The market has been streamlined for sure but I feel like we don't see as many companies trying to pass off carbon copies of other games anymore to make a quick buck either. The quality has gone up because people aren't go to pay for a sub-standard game anymore.

It's evidence of a game that was ruined by hackers. There are various examples of this, lot's of games have died because of it. I agree, I don't think the console market can be ruined because it is so large, but there are heaps of games that have been destroyed by hacking/cheating. It just depends on the gaming genre you mainly play that will have more of an effect on your gaming experience from hackers.

When PC game market dropped from like 2B to about 1B in around 2002/2003 (where its growing again, cutting into the gap between the two markets btw), was it because of piracy, or the consoles cutting into market share? Console market practically doubled over at the exact same time, PS2/Xbox were on the scene. I think that's a much larger contributor than piracy...piracy is just an easy target to blame.

The video game market was larger, year over year, the console market just cut into PC gaming's share because of the accessibility and ease of entry into the platform. That's my belief.

As for where PC gaming is now? Of course without virtual platforms to acquire games the market would not be the same, but that's the case with any market. You don't change, you die. And no, you don't see people buying PC games in stores, because it's a ripoff and ancient practice that needs to go the fuck away. Although console folks are fucked, those restricted boxes with their DLC, ugh, it's terrible compared to PC. The whole console setup is just so bad compared to PC, it's just much more accessible.

To me the argument of piracy eroding game sales for any system has to be balanced against what percentage of those customers who pirate games would have ever bought them in the first place. It is very hard to justify that number being more than a rounding error of total games sold. The only people that feel otherwise are the copyright attorneys for the game developers.

When game developers stop putting out half finished games they want the full price for, I'll stop downloading them for free. It isn't a new thing with the internet ready consoles either. Companies can say "our game has X, Y and Z" but when released, X is missing to come at a later date, Y is broken and Z is never comes. Nobody is taking them to court, are they?

Reviewers make money of ads from the same companies they review, this has been a problem for years because it simply doesn't happen.


Look how much bullshit Madden had out of the box. No reviewer worth his salt touched on any of it. The Game Changers were bound by an NDA to stfu or be sued.

You had to pay to find out. No choice.



Sure, you could have waited a month for the users to find out it all and post it, but even then details oft go missed. Furthermore, an annual sports title has a 12 month shelf life, you wait a month and you're $60 doesn't go as far. The nature of the cycle.
