Wafer Challenges Brooks for Starting Job

Houston, Texas - In a scrimmage earlier this week in practice, Kyle Lowry sat out with a sprained wrist. Lowry would be okay for their next game but struggled with his quickness and agility. Without a back-up point guard to play against Aaron Brooks, Von Wafer stepped up to challenge. In what seemed like a mismatch in quickness and ball handling skills, Wafer proved the coaches wrong and had his way with Brooks.

The 6'5" guard out of Florida State used his height advantage to shoot over Brooks and it also allowed him to see the entire floor while blocking Brooks passing vision. Along with the height advantage came the blocks. Wafer has great drive defense and was able to block countless shots near the rim while Brooks seemed to be getting frustrated.

When asked about the possibility of Von Wafer playing point guard for the Houston Rockets, Rick Adelman said although he doesn't plan to make a change in the very near future, he would not take it out as a possibility. He also stated he has been very impressed with Luther Head's game since the Brent Barry injury and plans to use him more in the game.

With Brooks struggling and Head playing well at shooting guard, it is a very possible opportunity for Wafer to become a starter on this Rockets team. Brooks' shooting percentage has been in the low 30's the past few weeks and struggles on the defensive end, while Wafer has been a killer shooting the ball so far this year and has played well defensively. Although Wafers stats and play is hard to compare to Brooks' because of the difference in positions and the fact that Wafer plays against second units most of the time, this is a move that really can't hurt Houston and can only help them. Stay tuned to see if Rick Adelman makes the switch anytime soon.
