I answered in terms of right now.. not after this season, not after his career - Now. He isn't #2 or even #3 yet. Give him another season or two and he will have a ring, be 2nd in receiving yards, and 2nd or 3rd in receivingTDs..

So, if Randy Moss retired this off-season, you'd say that Cris Carter was better than Randy Moss?! You can't be serious. That would be like saying Charlie Joiner was better than Jerry Rice.

Most talented wide receiver in the history of the game. However, will never sniff Rice in the annals of greatness. It's Rice and a couple miles down the road you'll start to see Randy Moss and then a cast of characters that are interchangeable.

If he had a better attitude, better work ethic, and didn't hightail it out of Minnesota and languish in Oakland for a few years, who knows what his numbers would be or how good he'd really be. As is, with a strong finish to his career, I'd put him at #2.

2 greatest offenses of all time have him to thank. Outside of Oakland every QB that plays with him has career years and have legit MVP seasons.

Noone. Not Faulk , Not Rice can say they were as dangerous as Moss. You have to go back to Brown/Hutson to name guys as dynamic as Moss.

Almost by default a WR is never going to be as impactful as a RB or QB. Its a dime a dozen position. Only rarely does someone truly standout or dominate. When hes 'on' ,which is most of the time, hes unstoppable.

You cant rank him ahead of Rice or Hutson. After that it does get plausible.
The championships/records/plays/performances that Rice made regular and post season solidify his spot.
Hutson compared to his peers is just brutal. He all but invented the modern passing tree held 20 NFL records when he retired and had Jim Brown like consecutive streaks of leading in WR stats.

Moss simply cant hold a candle to these guys in historical perspective. Too many down or under achieving years. Flat playoff performances. Awful reputation as a competitor.
Simply put theres no reason that 4 of the last 5 seasons hes barely at the 1000 yard mark. Its pathetic for a guy that talented.
Would any of us look back at Barry the same way if he put him 500-1000-700-1000 yard seasons in his prime ?
Why forgive Moss for such wastes and abysmal performances especially knowing he was THE most gifted WR ever ??

Sorry but even though TD numbers , the correlation to sick offensive stats may be the guy is an under achiever , and doesnt belong in the same breath with Rice/Hutson.

I'd put him ahead of Hutson by a hair, because his talent is off the charts.

What Rice lacked in the talent that a player like Moss had...he'd outwork anyone in the game, especially Moss. It is what made Rice so great, was that Michael Jordan-like workaholism. And, when you have that kind of dedication to your craft, like Rice had, it doesn't matter who the young buck was competing with him...he'd sit him down.

I don't see eye to eye with the argument that Randy Moss makes his quarterbacks better, or does not need a great quarterback to succeed, or whatever the fuck they were trying to say in that jumbled point.

Last season without Tom Brady, Moss had 69 catches for a little over a thousand yards, with 11 TD's. Matt Cassel was never going to hit Moss deep, and Randy isn't the kind of guy who likes to go through the middle of the field too much.

Everyone knows the fallout that happened in Oakland. Now that could be a combination of losing and hating Oakland, but he still wasn't producing when he started there, and never had a great quarterback to make him look good. The stud quarterbacks make Randy Moss better, not the other way around.

Hey, it's killgod again. First point makes a lot of since. More competition makes it harder to lead the league.

Second point is different. Y'see, the late great Hutson was the first guy to even do such things. He played in a league where it was run first, run second, usually run third.

Even the great Fred Biletnikoff only averaged 45 catches a year playing from 1965 to 1978, while Hutson averaged 45 playing from 1935 to 1945.

All I'm saying is that even twenty years down the road, the league's best receivers generally weren't posting better numbers than Hutson did... Hutson's best year receiving was 1942, with 74 catches. Biletnikoff caught 61 passes in '68 and '71.

I agree with you to a certain extent, but thats like saying Babe Ruth leading the league in HRs is diminished because everyone else was playing "small ball" with hitting singles and stealing bases. Its easier to lead the league when the 2nd place guy has 30 receptions instead of 90 receptions...but to a degree that is all relative, too.

Don't know how to interpret your statement. He is not superior to today's athletes in an athletic sense, but I think Hutson's accomplishments are superior to Moss's.

But its not like Hutson's records stood for a couple years, then were obliterated when the league "decided to pass". His TD record stood from the time he retired in the late 40's until 1988 when Steve Largent broke it. Basically what you are implying is that the league was rush rush rush for over 40 years.

If you actually look at what happened in NFL history, it was Hutson's and the Packers' success that shifted the NFL from rush rush rush to the passing league it became in the 1950s. The Browns, Rams, and Colts definitely were passing teams in the 1950's, and they were also the most successful teams of that decade.

Kind of an odd way to look at things...as if the ball was accidently passed to Hutson, he accidently caught it, and the Packers accidently won games. I guess Jim Brown wasn't a supreme talent, its just that he was handed the ball more often than any other RB in the league during that era.

Hutson also did his thing before all the pass happy rule changes. When WR's and QB's were football players and not pussies. You could kill QB's and WR's back then. You could man handle WR's beyond 5 yards. It was MUCH TOUGHER to do it back then, than it is now. And his records stood for over 40 years.

His best year, 1942, under much harsher conditions for QB's/WR's are 199?/20?? numbers.

Hutson caught 74 passes for 1211 yards and 17 touchdowns.

That's pretty f'n impressive to have done well before the league rules made it easy to pass the ball.

If (a big if) Moss ended up breaking Rice's touchdown and yardage record by having a disgusting span these next five-six years, would you place him ahead of Jerry Rice? Or does character/lack of Superbowls prevent him from ever being "the best"? What if he and Tom Brady end up being the focal point of another 2-3 Superbowls?
