Ravens Sign FS Michael Huff

Ravens signed FS Michael Huff to a three-year, $6 million contract.
The highly athletic Huff was forced to play corner for the talent-depraved Raiders last season, but he'll replace Ed Reed at free safety with the Ravens. It's yet another shrewd signing from GM Ozzie Newsome as he rebuilds his defense. Huff is five years younger than Reed, has missed just four games in his seven-year career and his average annual salary is $3M cheaper. Thanks in large part to this week's additions of Huff and Elvis Dumervil, the Ravens are a good bet to improve -- likely significantly -- on last year's 17th-ranked defense.

I don't know if they've improved or not but they've done a good job of narrowing their scope of needs heading into a draft where they own 12 draft choices.

They're probably not going to repeat but they'll continue to contend every year just like they always have since Newsome took over.

If they were just losing Reed and Lewis, I could maybe see an argument (although a flawed one at best) that their defense could improve as Ray had definitely lost a step. But also losing Kruger, Ellerbe, and several other defensive starters makes that statement suspect at best.

Not really familiar with what Huffs been doing after he left the Longhorns. But I can tell you that Baltimore has 2 safeties on the rosters James Ihedigbo and Rookie Christian Thompson. Ihedigbo started for New England at Strong Safety a year ago before he came to back up Pollard. So he is no doubt gonna start week 1 at SS. Christian Thompson didn't play a snap and spent half the season on IR. Soooooooo Michael Huff will indeed be a upgrade (IMO) at FS.

It seems the consensus on Huff is that he is mediocre at best. But could that have been the defense he was playing in? Baltimore is loaded with pass rushers (especially now) and Huff will most likely be allowed to roam.

As a Ravens fan I'm glad we signed a veteran safety to (hopefully) compete with a high drafted safety (maybe Vicarro/Reid/etc...). Now all we need is a ILB and we will have replenished our defense losses.

NFL.com posed the question, "Who would you rather have? Kruger/Reed or Dumervil/Huff? Taking into account age and contracts.

Not going to repeat, I forsee us taking the 6 seed and losing in the Wildcard. However, if we can replace Boldin (which I think is our biggest loss) and sign or draft a good Widereceiver then maybe we take it to the divisional round.

2 years ago the raiders were 3rd in the league in sacks, putting pressure on the QB wasn't the problem. He simply cant tackle anyone in the open field, expect to see many broken tackles because of him. However he is a decent cover safety nothing spectacular but gets the job done. I think he might fit good with the ravens just dont expect him to play up to his previous draft status.

Huff got by early on by his Kiper hyper draft highlight reel. He was a beneficiary of the run on safeties and huge early success Reed/Taylor/Williams/Polumalu were having at the time.
I never really bothered watching him...man he looked bad last night and his reputation seems pretty lulz worthy.

With Huff and Jimmy Smith in the secondary this defense is in trouble. All offseason the coaches have been raving about how confident Smith has become.........confidence doesn't mean anything when you suck.

I was going to say this. Seemed like in college he was always bringing guys down by latching on to their shoulder pads as they ran over him.

Huff isn't anything special, but this Broncos offense is going to make a lot of secondaries look like shit. Eric Decker didn't do anything Thursday and Manning still tossed 7 TD's

That's true. Huff is a younger, less injury prone upgrade over Ed Reed, but they were making it sound like it was also a talent upgrade on TV last night. That's just not the case, Reed is still a better coverage safety then Huff.

In any case, there are some new faces on defense, and it's going to take some time for them to gel. The player I would be worried about is Jimmy Smith, because he's already had a season in this system.

Huge disappointment for me in game 1. Dude couldn't make a tackle to save his life, albeit the TE he was trying to tackle looked triple his size. Huff better get his act together or we may see Thompson get a opportunity back there.

As for Jimmy, he actually played fairly well; he had a few mind lapses (IE: the screen to Thomas and Thomas cut back juke), but he put a decent performance on the field. Jimmy did force a fumble on Decker and had Decker/Thomas shut down for a good portion of the game. (IMO) Corey Graham outside of Huff was the most lack luster DB on the field. The blown coverage on Wes Welker in the redzone was just stupid and not to say covering Welker is easy by any means. But it was almost as if the gameplan was to take advantage of Graham early with Welker.
