Reds & Braves complete another blockbuster

The Braves have acquired shortstop Paul Janish from the Reds in exchange for right-hander Todd Redmond, tweets Mark Bowman of MLB.com. Atlanta has confirmed the deal in a press release.

Janish, 29, has spent 2012 with Triple-A Louisville after playing 114 games for the Reds last season. The shortstop has never been much of a hitter but boasts a very strong glove. Janish owns a .221/.289/.302 slash line in 324 career games and could offer support at shortstop in the absence of Andrelton Simmons.

Redmond, 27, has never appeared in a big league game. The right-hander has been with Triple-A Gwinett since 2009 and has a 3.78 ERA with 7.5 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 in 97 starts.

Another SOLID BASEBALL TRADE between the two teams. Braves needed a MLB caliber SS due to the Simmons injury, Reds needed a "AAAA" SP due to a depleted high minors pitching staff.

Prospects Billy Hamilton & Didi Gregorious moving up to AA & AAA respectively made Janish expendable, as he was no longer even going to play every day for Louisville.

Braves have a million (younger) pitchers in the minors who either have or would get the call up before career minor leaguer Redmond, who is 27.

Just made a ton of sense, much like the Francisco/Hoover deal.

Yanish sucks but I suppose this is better than Yuni B. Watching the soft-J and Jack Wilson platoon for the next four weeks should make for a pretty agonizing experience.

I was hoping Wren might acquire Marco Scutaro. Janish may suck but he has to be better defensively than what Pastornicky was.

Not even close. Janish is a very good defensive player, sometimes brilliant in fact. He will not disappoint in that regard.

That's encouraging at least, because Pastornicky is really bad at SS. Basically has the tools and athleticism of David Eckstein, but without the ability to make the routine plays.

He might be a valuable DeRosa/Infante type down the road because he has good plate discipline, but he's not an everyday SS nor will he ever be. Anyway, hopefully the soft-J can play well enough defensively for us to no longer have to use Jack Wilson as Huddy's personal shortstop.

I was hoping Wren might acquire Marco Scutaro. Janish may suck but he has to be better defensively than what Pastornicky was.

Probably was too expensive, and what do you do with Scutez once Andrelton comes back? We needed a stopgap solution and Yanish seems to fit that definition in every sense of the word.

Janish has one option left for the rest of this year, so he also offers roster flexibility because you can ship him out if need be, and bring him back September 1.

Scutaro is owed around 2-2.5 Million for the rest of the year, could walk at the end of the year and would transition into a bench role and could fill in for Chipper instead of seeing that big brute we put at 3rd when Chipper needs a day off.

Redmond meanwhile, was called up twice by the Reds, but never got into a game. Throw in his one call up by the Braves, during which he never got into a game, and Redmond must hold the record for most call ups without appearing in a game. But hey, he's in the union!

Reds have a double header next weekend, so here's hoping Redmond FINALLY not only gets the call, but actually toes the rubber and either starts a game or gets into a blowout as the 26th man.

Janish has been terrific in the field, and his offensive ineptitude has flown under the radar because 1-7 are raking right now for the Braves. He's got the backup IF job locked up once Andrelton returns in 3 weeks.
