Performers & Slackers
==========================================================
Buffalo Bills Performers
1. HB - Thurman Thomas: Thurman Thomas had a mediocre end to last season in the playoffs as the Bills dipped out early. However he made up for it in the season opener for the 1991 season with an outstanding 202 yard 3 touchdown performance. Thurman Thomas joins an elite group of runningbacks that have achieved 200+ rushing yards in a single game, and ties his own record of 3 touchdowns on the ground in a single game for the team. Thomas broke a big 63 yarder to help inflate his numbers early and then pounded the Jets defense for 127 yards in the next 3 1/2 quarters.

2. LB - Shane Conlan: Conlan had a great all-around game today against the New York Jets. He pulled the 2nd highest total only to Kirby Jackson with an 8 tackle game, including 3 tackles for a loss. Not to mention he managed to drag down Tony Eason for a sack. He also helped nullify the Jets offensive game by intercepting the ball 2 times on the night, cutting Jet drives short and not allowing them to gain any momentum. He also proved even more aptitude against the passing game as he deflected 3 passes.

3. DE - Bruce Smith: The great Bruce Smith pulled out a solid season opener as he tackled 6 Jet players on offense, including 1 for a loss in the backfield. To add to his career totals he tallied up 2 sacks on Jet quarterback Tony Eason, completing his night on top.

Buffalo Bills Slackers
1. CB - Nate Odomes: Probably the most glaring omission in the Bills defense in today's game was the lack of solid play by their cornerbacks, namely Nate Odomes who was assigned to cover youngster Jet WR, Terence Mathis. Mathis had over 100 yards and a touchdown on the night, dooming it a failure as far as coverage went for Odomes. He did have 3 tackles and a deflection but his lack of coverage skills showed a glaring hole on defense for the Bills that will need to be fixed if they want to advance during the regular season.

2. P - Joe Prokop: Joe Prokop was an off-season free agent signing by the Bills to fill a need at the position. But in the season-opener he had a relatively lackluster performance on his 3 punts that averaged only 38 yards per punt. He will need to extend his range if he wants to help the Bills push offenses farther back.

3. S - John Hagy: A mediocre 2 tackle game from John Hagy didn't help the Buffalo bills defensively. But luckily due to the outstanding performance by their offense, as well as the other defensive players the Bills easily siphoned his responsibilities.

New York Jets Performers
1. WR - Terance Mathis: Young receiver, Terance Mathis had a solid rookie season for the Jets in 1990 where he had 63 catches for 652 yards and 2 touchdowns, proving that he may have what it takes to be a solid co-headliner with Al Toon. Well all those expectations showed signs of being met in the 1991 season opener when he an outstanding 10 catch, 128 yards and a touchdown, as well as returning for a total of 119 yards. If Mathis keeps this up Al Toon may have found his heir apparent, and the Jets might...win next time.

2. CB - James Hasty: James Hasty had a solid game against one of the better passing attacks in the league. He helped the Jets manage Jim Kelly and contained Andre Reed to only 4 catches for 65 yards, which is an accomplishment. Hasty also deflected away a pass and managed to make 8 tackles on the night as he used his speed to fly across the entire field.

3. LB - Mo Lewis: Mo Lewis had a very successful first game in the NFL. The 1st round draft pick had 4 tackles on the night, 2 for a loss, and also managed to record the first interception of the 1991 season for the New York Jets. The Jets will hope to see even more progression from this young talent in the near future to help bolster their defensive corps.

New York Jets Slackers
1. HB - Blair Thomas: Blair Thomas was the front-runner for the offensive rookie of the year last season before he got injured a few weeks into the season. Thomas had 116 carries for 540 yards and 6 touchdowns, which showed amazing promise to finally bring a run game to a struggling Jets offense. However this being his first game in practically a year, it was understandable, but still disappointing, that Thomas performed a 2 carry, 59 yard night for a 2.4 yard per carry average. Hopefully he can return to rookie form and stay injury-free for the remainder of the Jets 1991 season.

2. WR - Al Toon: Al Toon did not have the best game in his season opener as he was shut down, but the fact that the Bills focused on Toon allowed Mathis to have the big game that he did, so all in all Toon's 2 catch 27 yard performance had a balancing act effect that turned into a positive, but Toon hopefully won't be making a habit of this as the season goes on.

3. LG - Mike Haight: Mike Haight had a struggling opener to the 1991 season against the Buffalo Bills. He did not have a single pancake, going up against Bruce Smith and company. But he also allowed 75% of the total sacks he allowed all year last season (4) in this one game, with 3 sacks allowed. Haight will definitely need to improve this in order to protect the blind side of either Ken O'Brien or Tony Eason, depending on if O'Brien can not get injured again at the start of the game.

Game Notes
====================================================
- Ken O'Brien was hurt on his 2nd pass play, he threw 1 incomplete pass and and then was knocked out for the rest of the game, which is why Tony Eason stepped in.

Boomer Esiason Reflects On 1990 Season

AP - Entering into the 1991 season Boomer Esiason eclipses a key point in an NFL players career, as he turns 30 years of age. Boomer Esiason was originally drafted by the Bengals back in 1984 in the 2nd round, and has turned into one of the top quarterbacks in the league. With the Bengals, now entering his 8th season, he has already accumulated 21,422 yards, 152 touchdowns, and 94 interceptions. He is easily rivaling Ken Anderson for the most glorified Bengal quarterback in team history. However will that legacy be marred by his performance in the 1988 Super Bowl where he failed to defeat the Montana led 49ers, just like Anderson, or does Esiason still have what it takes?

Last year Cincinnati Bengals snuck into the playoffs with a 10-6 record after skipping them in the 1989 season. The Bengals were kicking on all cylinders during the regular season and appeared to be back in 1988 Super Bowl-Caliber form. Esiason threw 3,072 yards and 26 touchdowns on the year, and the runningback tandem of James Brooks (829 yards, 3 tds) and Ickey Woods (679 yards, 3 tds) was having success in the ground game. Tim McGee managed to haul in 74 catches for 948 yards and 9 touchdowns on the season with his #2 man, Eddie Brown racking in 61 catches for 720 yards and 8 touchdowns. 9th year tight end, Rodney Holman really impressed with a career high 66 catch season. However his range dropped as he only garnered 431 yards and 3 touchdowns on those catches compared to last years 736 yards and 9 touchdowns. Either way the Bengals offense was certainly looking dangerous heading into the playoffs, that is until Week 17.

In the final week of the 1990 regular season the Cincinnati Bengals were set to take on the Philadelphia Eagles in a game that had no consequence as both teams would easily be heading to the playoffs. However just seven plays into the Bengals opening drive, quarterback Boomer Esiason went down with an injury. The injury would later be diagnosed as multiple weeks and he would thusly miss the playoffs. As if things couldn't get any worse for the Bengals, in the 3rd quarter on a rough tackle by Clyde Simmons, Bengals runningback, James Brooks was injured as well. His foot contusion would also be keeping him out of the Bengals playoff run before they would heal. Erik Wilhelm stepped in at quarterback for Esiason and finished out the game with 131 yards and a touchdown to give them the 15-10 victory, and Ickey Woods was definitely a serviceable backup to Brooks, but the Bengals could already feel their offensive explosiveness dying before their first playoff game of 1990.

In the wild card round the Bengals had the unfortunate chance of meeting with the red hot San Diego Chargers. The good news? The Chargers were also missing their starting quarterback as breakout sensation Marc Vlasic was hurt and rookie backup John Friesz was going to take his chances. However a 174 yard performance by Charger runningback Marion Butts, and 2 touchdowns from Friesz, proved just enough to squeak by the Bengals 21 to 14. Erik Wilhelm did his best with a 267 yard 1 touchdown performance but 2 interceptions proved costly late in the game. Not to mention Ickey Woods struggled all night with only 51 yards on 32 carriers, for a horrendous 1.5 average. With the Bengals offense stifled the Chargers easily advanced and once again Cincinnati went home disappointed in the playoffs. Boomer Esiason made the following comments earlier today about reflecting back on the events of the 1990 season.

"As much as I was saddened by what happened last year it also made me stronger I think. Watching my team fall short just made me want to heal faster, and play better when I get my chance this season. We've had some rough spots these past few years here, and I'm not getting any younger, and in no way should last years loss fall on Erik's hands or even Ickey's as you have suggested. This is a team sport, and in so, I'm hoping to do my part this year and get us back to the top."Boomer Esiason, Cincinnati Quarterback

Boomer Esiason has since fully recovered from his injury, as well as runningback James Brooks. The Bengals did unfortunately loose a few key players in the off-season however, they did their best to fill those wholes as well. The additions of defensive end Daniel Stubbs (89), rookie DT Chris Zorich (72), ex-Packer cornerback Mark Lee (91), and rookie upstart safety, Aeneas Williams (84) all bring hope to the Bengals defense as well. If the Bengals can continue through 1991 with the ability they showed in 1990, but remain healthy when it comes to crunch time, the league may once again be very surprised by this franchises ability to fight in the playoffs. If not now then Boomer Esiason may end up being lost in history, for his window of opportunity is almost closed shut.

Performers & Slackers
==========================================================
Cincinnati Bengals Performers
1. HB - James Brooks: James Brooks was one of the question marks coming into the 1991 season. After ending last year with an injury that saw him miss the Bengals playoff game, the Bengals were wondering how long it would take Brooks to get acclimated to the starting role again. Apparently it wouldn't take long as Brooks had an outstanding 147 yard 2 touchdown performance, including a 39 yard break out run in the 3rd quarter against a talented Pittsburgh Steelers defense. He also managed to make 25 yards in the air as well proving his versatility. If Brooks keeps this up Ickey Woods may end up being phased out of the two-headed runningback system in Cincinnati.

2. DE - Daniel Stubbs: Daniel Stubbs was a big free agent acquisition for the Cincinnati Bengals defense this off-season. He played well last year and was hoping to bring much needed intensity to the Bengals defensive line. Stubbs exploded in his first game in a Bengal uniform as he tallied 3 sacks against Steelers quarterback, Bubby Brister. The 3 sacks would tie Daniel Stubbs with Anthony Pleasant of the Cleveland Browns for the current league lead in sacks.

3. CB - Aeneas Williams: First round draft pick, Aeneas Williams had a solid opening performance for his NFL debut. He managed to make 3 tackles on the night, including one for a loss. He also added his own personal historic event as he intercepted a Bubby Brister pass late in the 2nd quarter for his first in his hopefully solid NFL career.

Cincinnati Bengals Slackers
1. WR - Tim McGee: McGee struggled in the first game of the 1991 season as he only caught 2 passes for 17 yards on the night. Those hardly look like number one wide receiver caliber numbers. McGee will have to improve those if he actually wants to keep his top spot as a slightly younger Eddie Brown is creeping up behind him, and he actually had about double the performance that McGee did in the opener. Some mediocre play by Boomer Esiason was also a contributing factor to the lack of numbers McGee put up, but is still no excuse for a decidedly forgettable game.

2. LB - James Francis: James Francis struggled to make tackles all night as he was shaken free 4 times throughout the game. These missed tackles ended up giving the Steelers a few key first downs, as well as dropping Francis' morale for the remainder of the game. As a result Francis ended with only 1 tackle on his stat sheet for the entire game, something that needs to be worked on to help vault the Bengals linebacker corps into stardom.

3. TE - Rodney Holman: When the top receiver, Tim McGee, is struggling to get things done offensively it is usually the job of the tight end, Rodney Holman, to bail him out of the situation and put up compensatory numbers. However in the 1991 season opener for the Bengals Holman did not do what was expected. Holman is coming off a career high 66 catch season in 1990, and he opened this year's season with a single catch for 8 yards on the entire night. These numbers will need to be improved before chants of aging are thrown at the veteran tight end.

Pittsburgh Steelers Performers
1. LB - Bryan Hinkle: Bryan Hinkle is often over-shadowed in the Steelers linebacker corps because of the young talent he hast surrounding him in Gary Lloyd and Hardy Nickerson. However he proved himself by outshining both of them in the 1991 opener against the Bengals. He put up 4 tackles on the night, one of which was a tackle for a loss. Not to mention he also managed to wrangle Boomer Esiason for a single sack and an interception in the 2nd quarter, as well as deflecting a pass. Hinkle proved his versatile nature by garnering a statistic in just about every category.

2. LB - Hardy Nickerson: While not quite as solid as his fellow teammate, Bryan Hinkle, linebacker Hardy Nickerson had a solid opener to the year with a 5 tackle 1 sack performance against the Cincinnati Bengals.

3. WR - Louis Lipps: Louis Lipps proved that as a veteran wide receiver his age wasn't going to affect him as he soared above all other Steelers wide receivers, once again, in this years debut. His 8 catches for 121 yards easily were the best. However 2 drops prevented his numbers from looking stellar. Lipps will need to continue this until the Steelers can find a suitable solid number two receiver to compliment him, as they seem to have yet to be able to locate.

Pittsburgh Steelers Slackers
1. HB - Merril Hoge: Merril Hoge has a young runningback breathing down his neck in Barry Foster, and if things don't improve from his performance in tonights game, then he will very quickly be replaced. Hoge had one single bright spot in today's game, and that was that he scored a 1 yard touchdown run, by falling into a huge hole in the line. However on his 14 carries he had a horrendous, 14 yards. He made a single catch for 8 yards as well. These numbers hardly look like starting runningback numbers for a playoff caliber team, and they'll need to change as soon as possible.

2. QB - Bubby Brister: Bubby Brister struggled in his first game of the 1991 sason. He completed 55% of his passes for 243 yards, but did not throw a single touchdown. He also threw 2 interceptions throughout the game which gave him a total 53.9 quarterback rating, leaving much to be desired. The Steelers will need their leader to pick up his play in the near future if they want to remain in contention as a playoff team.

3. OL - Tom Ricketts: Tom Ricketts did have 2 pancakes on the night but that was overshadowed by his allowing of 2 sacks on quarterback Bubby Brister. Ricketts was dominated by Bengals free agent DE, Daniel Stubbs, throughout the entire game, and became a glaring weak spot on the Steeler's offensive line. Hopefully he can improve his play in the next few games or it may be Bubby Brister that feels the repercussions of Rickett's less than stellar performances.

Top Left: Bubby Brister would soon get used to this image as Daniel Stubbs was in the Steelers backfield for the majority of the game.
Top Right: Kendal Smith takes this perfectly thrown pass from Boomer Esiason and then turns on his afterburners as he races down field for a 73 yard touchdown reception to make it 7-3 Bengals early in the 1st quarter.
Bottom Left: Bryan Hinkle catches Boomer Esiason by surprise as he lurks in the shadows and then nips this pass out of the air for a key interception.
Bottom Right: Rookie defensive back, Aeneas Williams shows his much touted leaping ability as he extends beyond belief on this pass to pick Brister's throw out of the air for his first NFL interception.

Top Left: Free agent acquisition and ex-Packer veteran, Mark Lee, intercepts a Bubby Brister pass and is brought down by Steelers runningback, Merril Hoge.
Top Right: James Brooks blows through a weak Rod Woodson tackle and then sprints his way 39 yards for a spectacular touchdown run that makes the score 17-6 Bengals with 7:50 remaining in the 3rd quarter.
Bottom Left: Merril Hoge manages to shake off this Bengal defender and then collapse 1 yard into the end-zone for his first rushing touchdown of the season, and inching the Steelers closer 17-13, Bengals, with 2:34 left in the 3rd.
Bottom Right: James Brooks shoots to the outside around the Steelers defenders and easily walks in this 6 yard touchdown run at the end of the 3rd quarter to make it 24 to 13, Bengals.

Career Firsts
-------------------
-Bengals - FS - Aeneas Williams achieved his 1st career interception.
-Cowboys - DT - Eric Swann achieved his 1st career sack.
-Dolphins - RE - Michael Sinclair achieved his 1st career sack.
-Falcons - QB - Brett Favre achieved his 1st career passing touchdown.
-Packers - HB - Leonard Russel achieved his 1st career rushing touchdown.

Complaining About Not Starting
-----------------------------------
-Browns - LE - Al Baker (82 Ovr, 35 Yrs) is complaining about how management ditched his veteran leadership for young Rob Burnett (79 Ovr, 22 Yrs) and wants to fight for his starting job.
-Browns - HB - Barry Word (82 Ovr, 27 Yrs) is complaining about his situation with Cleveland as soon as the season starts. Barry has stated that he is demanding to be traded to another team. People wonder if he understood the situation coming into Cleveland as he is fighting for the #2 spot at the HB position as Leroy Hoard (88 Ovr, 23 Yrs) is the starter and Eric Metcalf is #2 (83 Ovr, 23 Yrs).
-Buccaneers - FS - Dave Duerson (85 Ovr, 30 Yrs) has stated that he wishes to start for Tampa Bay as he knows he's aging and wants to get as much playing time in as he can before he may end up calling it a career. Duerson is playing a backup role to Harry Hamilton (92 Ovr, 28 Yrs) Duerson still has 3 years left on his contract with the Buccaneers.
-Buccaneers - HB - Gary Anderson (84 Ovr, 30 Yrs) a veteran runningback in the NFL feels that the signing of Roger Craig was uncalled for, due to his solid play last season. He has stated he is unhappy with the lack of respect the Buccaneers franchise showed the veteran and is demanding to either be traded or released from his 3 year contract at the end of the season.
-Falcons - QB - Chris Miller (84 Ovr, 26 Yrs) is unhappy that the Falcons decided to go with rookie quarterback Brett Favre (83 Ovr, 22 Yrs) over him as the starter. Miller feels he is entering the prime of his career and wants his playing time upped.
-Lions - HB - Rueben Mayes (82 Ovr, 28 Yrs) wants to get more carries instead of strictly being 'the backup' to Barry Sanders (96 Ovr, 23 Yrs).
-Oilers - HB - Lorenzo White (82 Ovr, 25 Yrs) feels that his talent is being wasted on the bench. He was pumped to earn the starting role this season for the Oilers when Mike Rozier departed, but with the pickup of Bo Jackson (93 Ovr, 28 Yrs), White is seeing his chances close.
-Patriots - LB - Johnny Rembert (94 Ovr, 30 Yrs) was baffled when the Patriots head coach benched him this week. Rembert is easily the most skilled linebacker on the squad, but due to an altercation at practice the head coach penalized him for the week 1 game, and he was definitely not happy about that.
-Rams - HB - Curt Warner (82 Ovr, 30 Yrs) feels that he has earned himself the right to start over Cleveland Gary (83 Ovr, 25 Yrs) and rookie Rickey Watters (81 Ovr, 22 Yrs) however the Rams went with young Watters for game one, and plan on having him split carries with Cleveland Gary.
-Redskins - FS - Alvin Walton (85 Ovr, 27 Yrs) is having a hard time acclimating to the fact that free agent aquisition, Vencie Glenn (96 Ovr, 27 Yrs) is the new starter for the Redskins. Walton was fine with it initially but his lack of playing time is starting to test his nerves.

Randall Cunningham Returns to the Champion Philadelphia Eagles

AP - Last year the Philadelphia Eagles had a perfect season that ended in a Super Bowl victory. Randall Cunningham ended up throwing the final touchdown pass to wide receiver Fred Barnett, 41 yards with no time left in the game to make it, 28-24 Eagles victory.

However in the opening few weeks of the 1991 season the Philadelphia Eagles are struggling as returning NFL champions. Mainly because quarterback Randall Cunningham was injured during the pre-season, and ended up missing the first two games of the regular season. In those two games the Philadelphia Eagles stumbled to an 0-2 start, loosing Week 1 13-10 to the Los Angeles Raiders and then in week 2 loosing 10 to 34 to the Washington Redskins. A seemingly unbreakable 10 point glass ceiling preventing the Eagles offense from truly taking off. However it wasn't necessarily due to the short comings at quarterback.

The Philadelphia Eagles backup quarterback is the now 10 year veteran Jim McMahon. McMahon is certainly no new comer when it comes to championship teams as he was the leader of the 1985 champion Chicago Bears team. So far throughout his career Jim McMahon has 13,777 yards with 79 touchdowns and 68 interceptions. He is certainly a capable quarterback, but at his 32 years of age he might be slowing down as the game speeds up around him. McMahon struggled in the first two games of the season for the Eagles and as a result the Eagles are starting off with a loosing record. However luckily for them their true leader, Randall Cunningham, is now fully healed and ready to get on the football field.

"It's just part of the game. No team can call themselves a great team if they rely on a single man. I'm grateful that everybody thinks I'm such an integral part of the Eagle's offense. But at the same time I along with the rest of my team thought we should have easily had a victory in these two weeks. Either way I'm just happy to be on the field and contribute myself. I feel re-invigorated, and anxious after watching from the sidelines to get back in there and hopefully bring a back-to-back championship to this city. People always ask me why I think that I can fly, and I always just tell them, it's because I'm an Eagle."Randall Cunningham, Philadelphia Quarterback

Last year with the Philadelphia Eagles Randall Cunningham had 2,844 yards on 294 of 482 passes. His 60% completion percentage along with his 20 touchdown to 13 interceptions left him with an 80.1 quarterback rating on the season. Not to mention he showed his ability to run the football with 505 yards and 2 touchdowns added to his totals. The Philadelphia Eagles may not have been missing stellar Montana-like numbers from Cunningham these past two games, but what they did miss was the apprehension of the opposing defense. The ability to befuddle some of the best players around the league with the sheer duality of Cunningham's nature. Unfortunately for McMahon his lack of this duality meant a much easier game plan for opposing defenses, but with Cunningham returning for next weeks game against the Kansas City Chiefs the Chiefs better start changing their defensive plans or else this Eagle will soar to the end zone, either by foot, or by air.

New England Patriots Add Two

AP - The New England Patriots are filling some holes on their offense as they signed two free agents to their team at the end of the Week 2. The Patriots signed rookie wide receiver, Ernie Mills and young quarterback, Peter Tom Willis to the squad to fill in some much needed depth at those positions.

The New England Patriots are set with their wide receiver starters. Irving Fryar had a breakout year last year and as a result the 28 year old (89 Ovr) along with 24 year old Hart Lee Dykes (85 Ovr) are one of the better duos in the league. Last year each of them had 9 touchdowns, and a combined 1,629 yards on only 126 catches (59 rec 779 yds, and 67 rec 850 yards respectively). However after those two they dropped off a bit, last season they had Sammy Martin as the #3 and Greg McMurtry at the #4 spot battling it out with Michael Timpson. However Martin is currently sitting in free agency. As a result Greg McMurtry (72 Ovr) and Michael Timpson (69) are the #3 and #4 wide receivers, but the Patriots felt they needed to have at least 5 on the roster in case of an injury hitting one of the receivers. As ar esult they decided to go out and snag rookie wide receiver Ernie Mills. The Patriots put some faith into Mills by signing him to a guaranteed 2 year $2.20 million dollar contract with a $340k signing bonus. Hopefully the commitment by the Patriots won't be regretful when Mills contract ends.

Ernie Mills was a talent receiver at the University of Florida. Mills was originally drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the 6th round of this years 1991 draft. However due to the glut of wide receivers battling it out in training camp there had to be a few losses. With Andre Reed and Steve Tasker locking up the #1 and 2 spots several rookies in Jeff Graham (73 Ovr), Mike Pritchard (74 Ovr), and Raghib Ismail (71 Ovr) were fighting it out, along with 27 year old Don Beebe (72 Ovr) and performing better than Mills. Mills did improve throughout pre-season (+1 Ovr) but the Bills needed the roster space and on the final cut day released Mills. Mills however was quick as to find a new job as two weeks later he just signed with the Patriots. They already believe he is better than Michael Timpson (69 Ovr) and will be the #4 wide receiver on the roster.

As for the Patriots other free agent signing, it was young 24 year old quarterback, Peter Tom Willis. Willis was actually a rookie last season with the Chicago Bears, and was the #3 quarterback behind Jim Harbaugh (75 Ovr) and Mike Tomczak (73 Ovr). Due to the fact that Chicago was intent on getting Harbaugh playing time, and Tomczak filled in for the only game that Jim did not play, Willis was left without taking a single snap during the regular season. However some solid pre-season play still kept him in the heads of many NFL teams, and obviously New England was one of them. The young quarterback will once again find himself at the #3 spot behind starter Steve Beuerlein (80 Ovr) and backup Tom Hodson (70 Ovr). However he only signed a 1 year $480k salary, $60k bonus contract. Willis said he would love nothing more than to play out his career in New England but his desire to start outweighs that. As a result he said by the end of the year if he gets playing time with the Patriots and they offer an extension he would gladly sign, but if not, he would like to find someplace else to throw the football in 1992.

Johnny Rembert Holdout Continues

AP - The New England Patriots had a surprising 12-4 season last year that saw them go to the playoffs. Many people did not expect the stellar play out of the Patriots defense that helped then to allow the lowest points of their division at 221. This was achieved mainly due to their solid linebacker corps consisting of 31 year old Andre Tippett (89 Ovr), 25 year old Vincent Brown (89 Ovr) and their two middle linebackers Ed Reynolds (89 Ovr, 29 Yrs) and 29 year old Johnny Rembert (93 Ovr). Through their unique 3-4 scheme the Patriots defense stopped many talented offenses last year, but one of these linebackers is causing some problems in the 1991 season.

Johnny Rembert is currently refusing to play for the New England Patriots until they give him what he thinks he deserves. Last year with the Patriots Rembert was 4th on the team in tackles with 83, and had 5 sacks along with 3 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recover and 2 interceptions. While these numbers certainly were solid, fellow linebackers Ed Reynolds and Vincent Brown as well as free safety, Fred Marion, all eclipsed him in tackles, yet Rembert's ego is getting in the way of the team's success. Rembert has demanded a lucrative double-figure salary to suit back up in a Patriots uniform and take out offensive players. However the New England Patriots are simply ignoring him and seem to be content letting him sit on the bench.

The New England Patriots are refusing to pay Johnny Rembert his demands for two simple reasons. The first being that they simply do not have the money available unless they were to release several players currently contributing on the roster. With a cap room of $200,000 and demands of $10 million + , it doesn't look like Rembert will be playing much this season. Not to mention the Patriots seem to be perfectly happy handing the reigns to their 3rd, now 2nd string MLB, Ilia Jarostchuk. The 27 year old spent his rookie year with the Cardinals, was released and went to Miami, was released, and returned to the Cardinals, before coming to New England in 1990. As a 3rd stringer in 1990 he had only 8 tackles to his stat line all year long, but so far in 1991 he is picking up right where Johnny Rembert left off. Jarostchuk has improved greatly and is already tied for #2 in tackles on the Patriots with 30. Only second to ROLB Vincent Brown's 37. He also has a fumble recovery on the year as well.

Ilia is playing well and as a result the Patriots are not concerned with Rembert, who's demands are falling on deaf ears. It doesn't appear like the Patriots are willing to compensate Rembert by offering a release to him either. Either way it seems Johnny Rembert may have bitten off a little more than he can chew, as it appears the solid play of Ilia Jarostchuk has given him no leverage.

Rookie Quarterback, Brett Favre Is Given the Green Light.

AP - Brett Favre is a young 22 year old rookie out of Southern Mississippi who may be getting his first big chance in the NFL. Favre was highly touted coming out of college and as a result with the #1 pick in the 1991 NFL draft the Atlanta Falcons selected young Favre. However would he be able to get playing time despite being on the same team as a veteran like Chris Miller?

Chris Miller is entering into his 5th season in 1991 as an Atlanta Falcon quarterback. He too was originally drafted in the 1st round by the Falcons in 1987. However every year he has seemingly progressed into a better quarterback, after only 3 games starting his rookie season and with a horrible 1 touchdown 9 interception mark, things weren't looking good. Then 1988 rolled around and he threw 2,133 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions as a respectable split-time starter for the Falcons. Then in 1989 he finally came into his own with a 3,459 yard performance with 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. However his production was cut short in 1990 which many expected to be a breakout year for Miller because of an injury. As a result he had 1,413 yards 8 touchdowns and 8 interceptions, meanwhile backup Scott Campbell completed the season. Then in 1991 the Falcons threw a curve ball by drafting a quarterback with their #1 pick, showing a lack of confidence in the durability and capability of Chris Miller. Miller has started the first two games of the 1991 season with the Atlanta Falcons and they've stumbled to an 0-2 start. As a result head coach Jerry Glanville will be making the decision to start rookie Brett Favre at quarterback.

Favre certainly has the tools and capabilities to be a starter but many think it may be too early to throw such a young prospect into the starting lineup, especially when the season is certainly salvagable. Miller has openly expressed his lack of faith in the decision and is also hurt that the Falcons organization would shame him in such a manner.

Favre will have a lot of talented players to work with as Steve Broussard returns after a 1,189 yard 7 touchdown season on the ground (352 yards 4 touchdowns in the air) as well as wide receivers Andre Rison, Michael Haynes, and Floyd Dixon. Now it is up to him to utilize these tools to their best capabilities and prove critics wrong and show that he truly can be a great NFL quarterback.

Bengals Fill Two Holes

AP - The Cincinnati Bengals made a dip into free agency at the end of the 3rd week of the regular season. Apparently the front office felt they lacked the depth they needed at the Wide Receiver and Cornerback positions. As a result the Cincinnati Bengals signed wide receiver Clarence Weathers, and cornerback Donnie Elder to the team.

Clarence Weathers (71 Ovr) is a 31 year old 8 year veteran wide receiver of the NFL. While he's never really been given a #1 position, he did have his best years with the Cleveland Browns, including 1985 where he had 16 catches for 449 yards and 3 touchdowns, with that 28.1 yard per catch average proving that he was a capable deep threat. Last season with the Green Bay Packers Weathers accumulated 25 catches for 277 yards and 2 touchdowns as the teams #4 receiver, which caught the Bengals eye. WIth the injury to Tim McGee (89 Ovr) the Bengals were left with only 3 wide receivers on the roster and decided they needed to add another in case of a second injury. As a result Weathers was signed to a 2 year, $2.46 million, $400,000 bonus contract. The 31 year old will play the #4 spot for the Bengals, but while McGee is injured he will be the #3 receiver on the team in the interim.

The Bengals also signed a cornerback to the team in 28 year old Donnie Elder (74 Ovr). Elder is a nomad in the NFL because in his 7 years in the NFL he now has been on 6 teams, the only team he's spent more than one year with was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1988 and 1989 where he had 4 interceptions combined there as a nickle corner. He won't be asked to do much more here with the Bengals as he'll probably be played as the #3 nickel corner on the Bengals roster behind Mark Lee (91 Ovr) and rookie Jimmy Spencer (79 Ovr). The Bengals bring much needed depth with elder as they currenlty had Rod Jones (64 Ovr) playing the nickle corner positon, and with a glut of talented corners still sitting in free agency the Bengals decided to pull the trigger. Edler signed a 2 year $3.24 million dollar contract with a $920k bonus.

Giants Trade Away Rookie Runningback

AP - 21 year old Michigan graduate, Jon Vaughn, has not taken his first snap in the NFL, and he is already being traded away to another team. The young star (73 Ovr) was drafted by the New York Giants late in the draft in a position that they already had plenty of depth in, as a result, they felt the roster spot could've been utilized elsewhere by another player.

Vaughn was sitting 3rd on the depth chart for the Giants behind starter Rodney Hampton (84 Ovr) backup Dave Meggett (77 Ovr) and was being pushed by two other young running backs behind him in Lewis Tillman (69 Ovr) and Nick Bell (69 Ovr). As a result the New York Giants decided to trade away Jon Vaughn so that they could put an established 3rd quarterback on the roster, so they decided to trade him to the New Orleans Saints for veteran quarterback, John Fourcade.

The Giants were weakened at the quarterback position when star quarterback Phil Simms retired this off-season. As a result Jeff Hostetler (78 Ovr) finally gets his big chance this year, being backed up by youngster Paul Justin (74 Ovr) who also may see some playing time before the seasons over. However due to the untested nature of these two quarterbacks and the high risk of injury the Giants felt like they needed to add another quarterback to the roster in John Fourcade (72 Ovr). The 27 year old may see a snap or two before the years over and would probably have a better chance than sitting behind Bobby Herbert (79 Ovr) and rookie Dan McGwire (73 Ovr) in New Orleans.

The Saints will be utilizing Jon Vaughn much more then the Giants because for the Saints Vaughn will overtake the #2 spot from Gil Fenerty who has not been playing to his potential thus far this year. Fenerty (73 ovr) will take a step back to the rookie in the hopes that the Saints can locate a solid backup to fill in for Dalton Hillard (83 Ovr) when he needs a breather.

This mutually beneficial trade helps both the New York Giants and New Orleans Saints organizations, and probably won't be the last wheel-and-deal we see before the trade deadline arrives in just 3 more weeks.

Houston Oilers Release Kicker

AP - The Houston Oilers have agreed to terms to release 27 year old 4th year kicker, Teddy Garcia. Just one season after Garcia kicked his way into the playoffs with the AFC Champion Houston Oilers he is thrown into the free agent market.

Garcia (80 Ovr) was originally drafted by the New England Patriots in 1988. With the Patriots he kicked a horrible 6 of 13 field goals and 11 of 16 extra points. Needless to say the Patriots were quick to cut the rookie after that years performance. However one team took a chance with him in 1989 as the Minnesota Vikings added him to their roster. He definately improved his extra point kicking as he went 8 for 8 with the Vikings but his 1 of 5 field goal attempts left much to be desired. As a result, once again, Garcia was released by the Vikings. Then finally the Houston Oilers decided to add him to their roster in case 5 year Oiler kicker, Tony Zendejas (72 Ovr) didn't work out, and what do you know, early that year Zendejas got hurt and Garcia started to pave the way.

After much improvement throughout the regular season Teddy Garcia managed to improve greatly on his kicking accuracy. In week 5 with just a few seconds remaining in the 1990 regular season game Teddy Garcia knocked in a 50 yard field goal to give the Oilers the victory over the Green Bay Packers 27 to 24, and cement his spot as their starter. He became an integral part of the 12-4 team and a big reason for their arrival to the Super Bowl. In fact if it wasn't for the 2 field goals that Garcia hit (granted he missed 2 others) in their 13-10 victory over the San Diego Chargers in the AFC Championship game, they may not have even had a chance to win the Super Bowl. Throughout the season Garcia ended with 17 of 21 field goals for a much improved 80%, and hit 49 of 51 extra points! Although apparently that wasn't enough to suffice the Houston Oilers.

In the off-season the Houston Oilers signed kicker Norm Johnson (92 Ovr) to the team. In 1990 Norm Johnson had a struggling year with the Seattle Seahawks as he ended 26 of 33 for a 78% field goal rating, but still hit a perfect 41 of 41 extra points. However Houston, like many teams, felt this was just an off-year, and Johnson was quickly inked to a 2 year, $2.32 million dollar contract. The 31 year old has been playing greatly with an 80% field goal rating thus far this season, and has fully solidified himself as the new starting kicker for the Houston Oilers.

It may seem rather harsh that the Oilers were so quick to bail on Teddy Garcia after he had finally shown signs of improvement, and the capabilities to be a big-game kicker in 1990. But Norm Johnson just has too much skill for the Oilers to abandon to loyalty. Despite a rough season last year Johnson appears to be back to top form, as he's already responsible for the Week 3 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals (21 of 18) as well as scoring 14 of the 26 points scored by the Oilers in their week 2 victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

There's no doubt that Teddy Garcia shall once again find himself playing on a new team, and kicking victory field goals for that squad. The only question is will that team actually give him the loyalty he deserves, and keep him as their starter, or is he forever cursed to be a placeholder for the golden leg.

49ers Make Some Moves

AP - The San Francisco 49ers were in trouble after this week 4 game against the Detroit Lions ended in a close 13-14 victory. The main reason being that they lost a starting cornerback in Don Griffin (80 Ovr). Griffin sprained his knee and after a diagnosis team doctors say he won't return for at least 10 weeks.

The San Francisco 49ers aren't very deep at the cornerback position this season. After their starter Darryl Pollard (85) they drop to Griffin then Eric Davis (72) and finally Greg Cox (61). Since the 49ers don't feel that young Eric Davis is ready for the #2 cornerback slot and would still benefit from a few years as a nickel it appears they decided to dip into a rich free agent CB market and come out with a gem.

In doing so the San Francisco 49ers signed 28 year old conerback, Vestee Jackson (79 Ovr) to a 5 year, $11.45 million dollar contract with a $1.30 million dollar bonus. The hefty contract shows the 49ers willingness to be loyal to Jackson if he can take them to the next level. Jackson will undoubtedly fill in for Griffin during his absence, but by the time Griffin returns the 49ers are saying there is a possibility that Jackson could even surpass him and become their permanent #2 if he plays well.

However the signing of Jackson did come at a price as the 49ers needed to free some cap space in order to sign Jackson to his demands. As a result they released right outside linebacker, Mike Walter (69 Ovr). The 49ers decided to release the 30 year old 9 year veteran, who has spent the past 8 years with the San Francisco 49ers. Walter was at one point a solid starter for the 49ers but in his age has been surpassed by Bill Romanowski. As a result last year in 1990 Walter only had 9 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 ff, and 1 fr on the season. The 49ers felt that he had spent his time with them and decided to release his contract to help sign a more pressing need in Vestee Jackson.

If Jackson works out for the 49ers they shouldn't miss a step going into the next few weeks. Defensively they need the help against the pass or else they could easily be exploited by the opposing teams.

Packers Sign Three, Release One

AP - The Green Bay Packers made a big roster addition during their Week 4 loss to the Minnesota Vikings as they signed three players to the team, WR/CB/KR all around special teams player, Dwight Stone (73 Ovr), backup veteran quarterback, Mike Pagel (65 Ovr), and 26 year old cornerback, Sheldon White (70 Ovr). At the same time to make room due to the roster player limit the Packers were forced to release Lester Archambeau (69 Ovr) from the team, to make room for this talent.

The first significant signing by the Green Bay Packers was the addition of wide receiver, Dwight Stone, to be the 5th receiver on the Packers roster. The Packers have a star at the #1 in Sterling Sharpe (90 Ovr) and a solid veteran #2 in Perry Kemp (87) but they brought Dwight Stone in to fight it out with #3 Jeff Query (74 Ovr) who hasn't been playing as well as they'd like. They also brought him in to help returning the football as Vince Workman has been trying to return the kicks for the team so far, his 12 KR with a 21.5 average for 258 yards are solid, but they claim he lacks the explosive capabilities needed to break one for a touchdown. Last year Stone was circumvented by Rod Woodson in the return duties but did average 19.4 yards on kicks and 14.2 on punts in the few chances he got, but that including a 79 yard punt return, proving his ability to break a long one. Not to mention in 1988 he returned one for the Steelers 92 yards for the touchdown. Last season he also proved solid in the receiving category as he caught 26 passes for 307 yards and 1 touchdown. Either way Stone will be a valuable and versatile addition to the Green Bay Packer squad at the price of a 3 year $4.68 million dollar contract.

The second player the Packers added was veteran quarterback Mike Pagel (65 Ovr) to help backup Don Majkowski in case of an injury. Anthony Dilweg is the original backup (67 Ovr) and did have to fill in for Majkowski when he got hurt earlier this season for teh one game, and performed horribly as he went 17 of 32 for 53% for 92 yards and threw 3 interceptions. His 19.8 quarterback rating left much to be desired, so Green Bay felt they wanted to add an insurance policy to the team in Mike Pagel. Pagel has starting experience as he started for the Indianapolis Colts in 1985 and threw 14 touchdowns to 15 interceptions for 2,414 yards. He then went to the Cleveland Browns where he spent most of it backing up Bernie Kosar. Then last year he got another chance to start when Kosar went down with an injury. While he didn't perform that great with his 1,495 yard 5 touchdown and 15 interception performance, he did show that he could still lead a team as the Cleveland Browns, despite numerous injuries, finished 7-9 on the season. As a result the Packers felt he was the most capable backup available in free agency and signed him to a 3 year, $2.10 million dollar contract with a $150,000 dollar signing bonus.

The final addition to the Green Bay Packers team is cornerback Sheldon White (70 Ovr) who will be the 5th and final cornerback on a talented Packer secondary. The Packers have Jerry Holmes (90 Ovr) starting with Cris Dishman at the #2 (88 Ovr) youngster Leroy Butler (87 Ovr) sneaking in the nickel, as well as R.Pitts (76 Ovr) rounding out the top 4, so they're certainly capable, but White will prove as a solid backup in case one of the Packers talented corners goes down. Sheldon White came at a 3 year, $3.03 million, $450,000 bonus price tag however, but with Holmes at 32 years 1 year left and Pitts on his final year of his contract, one of the two probably won't be returning and White already fills that void.

The Packers did have to release a player in order to add these 3 talented substitutes to their squad, so young 23 year old Lester Archambeau was released after just 1 season as a pro. The youngster did show signs of talent (69 Ovr). But only so much could be done as he spent it sitting behind Matt Brock (82 Ovr). There's no doubt in the Packers mind though that this time next year he'll easily be on another squad somewhere in the NFL, just hopefully not in the Packers division.

Holohan_Pete1.jpg

Pete Holohan Traded to Atlanta Falcons

AP - 32 Year old Tight End, Pete Holohan found a new home today with the Atlanta Falcons. The Kansas City Chiefs tight end was traded away to Atlanta for two young backup offensive-lineman in a deal after expressing his lack of desire to play for the Chiefs.

Pete Holohan was originally drafted by the San Diego Chargers in 1981 and has been a solid tight end in the NFL since then. His best year was 1988 with the Los Angeles Rams as he tallied 59 Catches for 640 yards and 3 touchdowns as their top tight end. Then last season he played his final season with the Rams as he caught 28 passes for 148 yards and 1 touchdown in a lackluster year. As a result the Rams did not resign Holohan and he was put into free agency, where he ended up signing with the Kansas City Chiefs. However it only took 4 weeks into the season that Holohan found himself on another team, why? Because he demanded it so

"I didn't come to this team to spend the last few years of my career sitting on the bench and watching some young kid take my job. (Ben Coates 86 Ovr) I joined the Chiefs because they initially promised me that I would be starting for them. Well apparently that's not happening so I refuse to play for them. I demanded for management to trade me away, and i'm happy I did because now I get to join the Atlanta Falcons. They've already assured me that I'll be starting next week over Gene Wilkens for the starting tight end spot. I can't wait to get on the field and show that I still have what it takes to be a top starting tight end in this league."Pete Holohan, Falcons Tight End

In order to obtain Pete Holohan the Atlanta Falcons had to get ride of a few backup offensive lineman to entice the Kansas City Chiefs. As a result left guard, Reggie Wells (69 Ovr), the 24 year old 2nd season guard, and backup center Elbert Shelley (67 Ovr) at 25 years of age, both join the Chiefs. The Kansas City Chiefs are already short on the offensive line as starting left tackle Rich Baldinger hurt himself for the entire season, the addition of Reggie Wells will help backup Irv Pankey (83 Ovr) who is now starting at that position. Then to add continues depth they add Shelley to the team to play behind Tim Grunhard (87 Ovr) and Winters (71 Ovr).

Ronnie Lott Cracks The Top 15 All-Time List

AP - Veteran safety, Ronnie Lott, made history this week against the Detroit Lions as he picked off Rodney Peete. That interception marked the 52nd time that Ronnie Lott has made an interception in his career and as a result he has cracked the Top 15 all-time interception list.

32-Year Old Ronnie Lott now enters his 11th season with the San Francisco 49ers and continues to hear his name echoed amongst the greatest safeties to ever play the game. Well this week he just earned an argument in that favor as he cracked the top 15 all-time interception list at 52 on his career. Lott ties for 14th all-time with the likes of Jack Butler, Bobby Dillon, Jimmy Patton, Mel Renfro, and Larry Wilson, who all completed their stellar careers with 52 interceptions. Ronnie Lott still has plenty of games this season to move up and challenge the 13th overall player, Willie Brown who has 54 on his career. It will only be a matter of time before this veteran safety starts taking down one-by-one the members of this elite list.

Ronnie Lott is a true testament to versatility at the safety position. Ronnie Lott is currently leading the San Francisco 49ers in tackles, as well as tied for the lead in sacks. He is leading the team in fumbles recovered and tied for the lead in forced fumbles.

Whether he's taking a receivers head off as he goes across the middle, rushing to the line to stuff a runner at the line of scrimmage, or leaping into the air and picking off a quarterback's throw, there is nothing that Lott can't do.

Complaining About Not Starting
-----------------------------------
-Bears - CB - Lamuel Stinson feels that his reduced role on the defense is not using him to his full potential. He hopes to see more action in the next few weeks.

-Buccaneers - LOLB - Kevin Murphy is demanding to get some playing time as all he is doing is riding the pine this season. The Buccaneers feel they are set at their linebacking positions thus far through the season, and barring injury, it appears Murphy's demands may be falling on deaf ears.
