Previous Season Outcome: 6-10, No Playoffs

Projected 1992 Outcome: Last year was an off year for the Washington Redskins. The Redskins usually challenge in the tough NFC East for the top spot but this year they were at the bottom with a 6-10 record.

The Redskins suffered some key losses in the off-season with the surprise early retirement of Art Monk at wide receiver, leaving them without a number one option. The departure of Vencie Glenn at free saftey as well as his backup Brad Edwards.

Luckily for the Redskins they addressed the safety issue with the signing of ex-Ram Darrell Fullington and drafting rookie Jason Belser to back him up. However they did not address the wide receiver issue. While the Redskins did draft Desmond Howard, he is more a speedy kick returning type of receiver than the sure hands playability of Art Monk. Right now it appears that Gary Clark will be the teams top target with Jimmie Johnson at tight end being the team's number two probably option. With Desmond Howard and Ricky Sanders fighting for the #2 spot it appears the Redskins passing game might take a big blow.

Despite the changes in the off-season and the added depth the Redskins still have a glaring hole at wide receiver. I'm not confident that Desmond Howard can fill the void left by Art Monk and fear that the Redskins may barely improve next season to around a 7-9 record. They underachieved last year in going 6-10 but this year that would be an expected outcome based on the competition in the division, and the off-season moves made.

Previous Season Outcome: 6-10, No Playoffs

Projected 1992 Outcome: The Saints had a bad year in 1991 and hope to change that in 1992. They finished at the bottom of their division at 6-10 with even the Falcons and Buccaneers doing better. However the Saints may want to do better, but the changes they made are raising question as to whether or not it is improving the team.

The Saints biggest change up was the complete flushing of their wide receiver corps not named Eric Martin. With Quinn Early, Floyd Turner, Walter Stanley, and Gerald Alphin all finding other homes this off-season they had to go out and nab a few. The Saints settled with drafting Jimmy Smith, Darryl Hobbs, and Q.Vinson, meanwhile picking up ex-Chief Emile Harry for the 3rd spot. So the Saints addressed that issue but failed to address the cornerback situation.

With Robert Massey and Milton Mack both leaving the Saints only signed one equal corner to replace them in ex-Ram Jerry Gray. This will bring Toi Cook up and require him to pick up his game in order to be the team's #2 meanwhile Todd Lyght will be the nickle. The Saints also didn't address any major additions to their defensive line who has struggled as youngster Russell Maryland isn't fully developed yet, Renaldo Turnbull has been said to be out of position at end, and Wayne Martin (81 Ovr) is their top defensive tackle. The only addition the Saints made was sign a true defensive end in Michael Simmons (83 Ovr) to start over Turnbull who they may switch to linebacker at some point soon. But as an overall unit the defensive line of the Saints isn't ranked very much, but of course their outstanding linebacker corps certainly makes up for it.

The biggest two additions in the off-season for the Saints aren't front-page news as free safety Martin Bayless was signed. He is a solid player but many question why the Saints bothered pursuing him as right now all he'll do is sit behind Brett Maxie on the bench. Meanwhile the 2nd was the addition of a new starting tight end in rookie Mark Chmura. Chmura has the raw talent to be a solid receiving tight end in the league and that's something the Saints have not had that'll help open up the field offensively. Hoby Brenner was the team's starter last year and had only 15 catches for 93 yards and 1 touchdown. Needless to say the Saints game plan change will hopefully allow Chmura to shine and he'll definitely catch more than that.

This upcoming season might end up being more of the same for the Saints as they struggle to supplant themselves. They are either filled with veterans that are great at their positions (linebackers) or young players that need time to develop before they can become dominant (d.linemen). This is the limbo period for the Saints and how they play these next few years can have a huge impact on the future of this franchise.

Previous Season Outcome: 9-7, No Playoffs

Projected 1992 Outcome: The Seahawks suffered from playing in a tough division last year as they went 9-7 and still came short of the playoffs. With the 11-5 Rams and the 10-6 49ers on top of them Seattle needed to make some changes to get back into the playoffs. However, it appears they may have gone in the other direction.

The Seahawks made humongous changes this off-season that will dictate the next few seasons for the team. Firstly they released their star quarterback in Dave Krieg. Krieg was one of the league's top quarterbacks for a couple of seasons so far and now he will play in Detroit. To remedy this situation though the Seahawks signed Marc Wilson to a contract to be the team's starter. He brings a different style of qb-play to the team but is serviceable as a starter as the stop-gap. In the meantime the Seahawks also thought about the future by drafting Jeff Blake and Kent Graham this season. Blake is said to be impressing people at training camp so don't be surprised to see him eventually getting the starting nod over Marc Wilson as the season progresses.

They also showed a lack of confidence in youngster HB, Chris Warren by signing both Ickey Woods and Rueben Mayes, who could be competing for starting jobs here as well as numerous other teams. Warren is still the starter for the Seahawks but it seems necessary that the they had to pay for both HB's when they could've settled on one to backup and a less talented player to play 3rd string. It also seems to be a rough situation for journeyman Rueben Mayes who continues to try to solidify a starting job. The Seahawks also let go their star fullback, Derrick Fenner into free agency. To replace him the Seahawks continued to develop for the future by drafting young fullback, Sam Gash.

The Seahawks also nabbed Mark Ingram, who was the Giants top receiver to play second-fiddle to Brian Blades. Ingram will definately open up the passing game but the question remains whether or not Wilson or Blake can even begin to compare to the passing attack that Krieg brought to Seattle.

The Seahawks aren't troubled by the absence of their best defensive lineman, Jacob Green because they have plenty of depth. Jeff Bryant switched from defensive tackle to become the starting left defensive end over rookie Chuck Smith, who also shows promise. Tony Woods returns and Joe Nash as well, meanwhile Cortez Kennedy will get a chance to shine at the #2 DT position as he tries to keep another solid rookie, Sean Gilbert at bay. Meanwhile the biggest defensive addition was ex-Patriot holdout, Johnny Rembert at the middle linebacker spot. He will force Darren Comeaux into the #2 spot and the two veterans will make a great tandem. The Seahawks also nabbed the 49ers top cornerback, Darryl Pollard who will play behind Patrick Hunter and give depth to the cornerback position.

The Seahawks defense, despite loosing Jacob Green, has actually improved greatly this off-season with the additions of Johnny Rembert, Darryl Pollard, William Frizzell, Sean Gilbert, and Chuck Smith. The offense seemingly got better with Ickey Woods, Rueben Mayes, Mark Ingram, and Sam Gash being added to the team. But with Dave Krieg gone, and Marc Wilson/Jeff Blake now starting it will be interesting to see how the team changes, and if they can adapt.

Previous Season Outcome: 11-5, Wild Card Playoff Loss

Projected 1992 Outcome: Despite some struggles the Steelers put it together and ended with an 11-5 season last year that saw them entire the wild card playoff round. However they were done early as the Raiders beat them 34-31 in a battle of the backups. Bubby Brister injured himself in week 16 of the regular season and as a result the Steelers hoped Stan Humphries could lead them in the playoffs, but they faltered and lost.

This year the Steelers have made numerous changes that will hopefully keep them afloat in their tough division as they fight against division leading Bengals and 10-6 Browns to bust into the playoffs.

There were numerous hard hits the Steelers took this off-season with the departures of Louis Lipps, John Rienstra, Tom Ricketts, Keith Willis, and Dwayne Woodruff, all starters. Lipps was a solid number two for the team and Rienstra and Ricketts solidified the right side of the Steelers line. Willis decided to retire and Dwayne Woodruff went to greener pastures as well.

To address these holes the Steelers went out and signed Tony Mandarich to replace Ricketts, drafted Torrance Small to replace Louis Lipps, signed Eric Everett to replace Dwayne Woodruff, and made their biggest signing to replace Keith Willis, Charles Haley. Charles Haley is arguably the best at his position and he was one of the big free agent losses the 49ers suffered, but it's the Steelers gain. Haley will bring even more power to an already powerful defense and combine with Hardy Nickerson and Greg Lloyd to make a dominant force. The Steelers flushed out their wide receiver corps and are hoping that one of their rookies in Torrance Small, Arthur Marshall, and Cedric Tillman, will turn out to be a diamond in the rough and be able to fill in where Louis Lipps left off.

The only major weakness the Steelers have is at offensive line. With the departure of two of their better guys and the signing of big names like Charles Haley the Steelers could only afford to sign one replacement, Tony Mandarich. Unfortunately in the draft they ended up addressing other issues and when the off-season ended it appears the Steelers have nobody for their right guard spot. It will be a battle of the bad as Brian Bollinger (69 Ovr), Dave Moore (67 Ovr), and Maurice Morris (70 Ovr) are all competing to become the starting right guard. Eitherway that will be a big issue that might end up costing the Steelers as they'll have an obvious weak spot on the most overlooked set of players on the field.

Previous Season Outcome: 7-9, No Playoffs

Projected 1992 Outcome: Last year was a tough year for the Vikings. They thought Herschel Walker and company would help push them into an above .500 record, but it didn't happen. After initially starting 1-6 the Vikings switched starting QB Rich Gannon with Wade Wilson, and the Vikings continued to go 6-3 and finish the year 7-9, giving them hope. But any hope they had was dashed when players started leaving the sinking ship.

Many of the Vikings big-time players went away this off-season and it's hard to be optimistic about this upcoming season for the vikings. Herschel Walker was the most important departure. Which will mean Terry Allen will become the new starter, if he can't fill in the role recently acquired Derek Loville may end up starting. Starting qb Rich Gannon will fight with Mike Tomczak for the starting position as Wade Wilson left after his late season heroics in Minnesota. Fan hatred for Gannon is brewing and many simply want Tomczak to start because "he's not Gannon."

The retirement of Scott Studwell and the release of Walker Lee Ashley finally cleared up a cluttered MLB position. Bryan Cox was giving the go-ahead start over Henry Rollings for the top spot. Meanwhile Michael Brim left Minnesota as well denting the Vikings secondary as rookie Phillippi Sparks will try to replace him. However the largest hit to the Vikings team this off-season outside of Herschel Walker didn't just dent the secondary like Brim did, it demolished their secondary. Former starting strong safety Joey Browner leaves the team after his 84 tackle, 4 sack, 1 int, 11 deflection season, taking his skills elsewhere. The Vikings are looking towards the future as they feel rookie Willie Clay (78 Ovr) will eventually progress well enough to be a decent replacement for Browner.

The Vikings are now a very young team that is going to have to go through rebuilding seasons before it can think about being competitive. Terry Allen is the team's new runningback, Tomczak may be the team's new quarterback, Cris Carter is slowly improving, Bryan Cox is now taking over as the middle linebacker, Phillippi Sparks will hope to bring cohesiveness to the Vikings secondary, and Willie Clay wants to replace a former star. The Vikings are young but that doesn't mean they have the talent. It's naive to think all of these youngsters will pan out and become the players they expect but there's a good chance they will become solid players.

The Vikings have gone through a huge evolution this off-season, and some may say it's not for the better. With star players on both offense and defense departing or retiring, as well as continued confusion as to who the true starting quarterback is, who the true new starting runningback is, and a new defensive leader, the Vikings are going to go through struggles. How quickly these young players develop will determine just how long Minnesota will be in rebuilding hell.

Pre-Season Player Injuries
===============================================
92_wk0_injuries.jpg

Injury Thoughts - Some big injuries will make for some interesting outcomes during the first couple of weeks. Thurman Thomas will be out for pretty much the first 1/2 of the season for the Bills which could have an impact on that team. Harvey Williams proved himself last year filling in though so the drop-off may not be too bad.

Super Bowl winning 49ers linebacker, Bill Romanowski's injury is not good for an already ailing 49er defense, but it will allow the multitude of rookie outside linebackers the 49ers selected in the draft to have an opportunity to prove themselves in his absence.

The other Super Bowl team, the Raiders, also suffered a key defensive injury with Greg Townsend straining his knee. The injury will keep him out 9 weeks, and he is one of the top players on the Raiders defense. Townsend is one of the team leaders and without him it will be interesting how it changes the dynamic of the Raiders defense.

Jimmy Smith getting hurt will hurt his development early on his career, and really hurt the Saints passing attack as he was their #2 option. Without him Emile Harry will be the team's #2 and it'll drop from there in terms of talent. The Saints might have to focus more on the run game as a result.

The Seahawks are perhaps the team most affect as Chris Warren was injured. The Seahawks almost predicted it though with their off-season acquisitions of Ickey Woods and Rueben Mayes. As of right now Woods will be the starter for the first few weeks of the season until Warren is healthy to come back into the lineup. But the biggest injury was the season-ending injury to safety Eugen Robinson. Robinson is one of the best safeties in the league and his absence will greatly diminish the skill of the Seahawks defense against the pass.

Thanks bhurst and hulk!

Yeah trying to keep it alive despite my lack of free time anymore.

Anyway I've "watched" the first 7 games of week 1 so far. I'll be trying to throw those updates sometime this week up. Couple neat things happened, so be sure to check it out.

How Important Is Thurman Thomas To The Bills?

AP - Entering into his 5th season as a Buffalo Bill since being drafted in the 2nd round of the 1988 NFL Draft, Thurman Thomas was ready to continue being a top back in the NFL. However, unfortunately that was quickly cut short in pre-season when a torn tricep injury decided to keep him sidelined for the first half of the regular season. This begs the question, just how important is Thurman Thomas to the Bills? Will they be able to play well as a team without him?

Despite his short career so far Thomas is already one of the most versatile backs to play the game. His solid ground game combined with his pass catching abilities have greatly helped in the recent success of the Bills franchise. Ever since 1988 the Bills have a 46-18 win loss record which comes out to a 71.9% win percentage. But to get to the bottom of Thomas' success and how it correlates to the Bills we need to analyze each year.

1988, Thomas' rookie season. He manages to earn the starting job early in the season and ends up rushing for 881 yards and 2 touchdowns. With his pass catching yards he earns over 1,000 yards on the season but even this early his pivotal nature shows. The Bills went 12-4 in 1988 only loosing in week 5, 13, 14, and 16 to the Bears, Bengals, Bucs, and Colts respectively. What do all of those games have in common? Thurman Thomas had 10 or less carries in every one. With the lack of usage of the run game the Bills passing game was unable to compensate and the Bills lost. Coincidence?

1989 was a tougher year for the Bills as they dipped from 12-4 to 9-7 on their team record. However it wasn't an off year for Thurman Thomas as in his sophomore season he improved greatly and had 1,913 combined yards and 12 touchdowns on the season. However in 4 of the 7 losses for the Bills Thurman Thomas ended up with 12 or less carries on the game and as a result the Bills lost. Meanwhile in the 3 other losses Thomas didn't produce as well and was underneath the 100-yard mark.

In 1990 the Bills managed to return to form and go 12-4 once again on the season. Thomas' progression continued as he had 2,315 yards and 15 touchdowns on the season becoming an unstoppable force and runningback of the year. The Bills only 4 games they lost this season were week 4 against the Patriots, week 11 against the Rams, week 13 against the Dolphins, and week 16 against the 49ers. In each of this games Thurman Thomas had under 15 carries, and under 75 combined total yards.

Finally, in 1991 the Bills somehow found room to improve and went 13-3 on the season. Not to mention Thurman Thomas found some way to even improve himself over his gaudy numbers in 1990 with 2,359 yards and 20 total touchdowns crushing his previous high of 15 and surpassing his yardage total as well. This years team only lost in week 2 to the Chargers, week 11 to the Patriots, and week 15 to the Bengals. In all three games Thomas once again had under 15 carries, and under 75 combined total yards.

With four years of evidence under their belt it is quite obvious that the Buffalo Bills success seems to entirely depend on Thurman Thomas' ability to get the run game going. If Thomas' is unable to run then the Bills are unable to win. Which is not what the Bills want to hear right now. With Thomas suffering his first major injury of his career the Bills are now entering into murky waters. They are going to have to do their best to find a way to win without Thomas' or else they'll end up victory-less before his return. Luckily for the Bills they seem to have a capable young backup that was a rookie last year in Harvey Williams. Williams had limited play as Thomas took the bulk of the load, but when he was in he made the most of it in 1991. As a rookie Williams had 381 yards for 2 touchdowns, adding another 34 yards and another touchdown through the air. Harvey Williams will now step into the Buffalo Bills starting lineup in an attempt to replace Thurman Thomas and keep the Bills team rolling.

Williams will get a true test as he will become the Bills starter for the next 7 to 8 weeks. History has proven that the run game is the key to success for the Buffalo Bills and Williams will have that weight on his shoulders. If Williams can play as well as even a fraction of Thomas' abilities then the Bills might have a chance to come out of this gauntlet of games over .500. But if not then they may be in for a rough ride.

Game Summary: The story of this game was the New York Jets secondary, and the lack of run production for the Bills. In the first quarter things started off well for Buffalo as Harvey Williams was kicking into gear in substitution for an injured Thurman Thomas and he scampered for a 6 yard touchdown to give the Bills the first and only lead they would have all game. A few drives later with back and fourth punts led to the Jets tieing the game up on a Ken O'Brien drill to Al Toon for 72 yards. The touchdown would then be followed by a missed Staurovsky field goal on the next drive for the Bills.

In the 2nd quarter is when things started going downhill for Buffalo as each teams kicker nailed a field goal to keep it at a 10-10 tie. But then Jim Kelly threw an interception to Jets cornerback, James Hasty. Hasty would return the interception 51 yards for a defensive touchdown to put the Jets up 17-10. On the following drive Jim Kelly threw yet another interception to James Hasty. This time however Hasty was unable to return it to the house.

In the 3rd quarter, frustrated, the Bills finally came out again and resulted in the 3rd consecutive drive with an interception. Jim Kelly tossed a ball to nobody in particular and newly acquired corner, Cedric Mack intercepted the ball. A few punts and a turnover on downs as the Bills attempted to go for it on 4th and inches, failing, ended the 3rd.

In the final quarter of play Fuad Reveiz hit a field goal early, Jets lead 20-10. Raghib Ismail for the Bills made a mistake as James Hasty forced a fumble and it was recovered by Jets defender Lester Lyles. This turnover resulted in more points ad Fuad Reveiz hit a 35 yard field goal to stretch the lead 23 to 10. Attempting late game heroics and trying to make up for his 3 consecutive drives with an interception Jim Kelly ended up finding Raghib Ismail streaking down the field for a 64 yard touchdown to make it interesting as the game was now 23-17 Jets with 4:17 left in the game. The Jets were unable to run the clock out completely before punting at 0:51 and giving the Bills the ball back. The Bills started to march but the interception bug reared it's ugly head once again for Jim Kelly as Erik McMillan picked off a pass with 17 seconds left in the game and ended all hopes of a miraculous comeback victory for the Bills.

Left: Harvey Williams starts the game right for the Bills as he waltz's in this 6 yard rush for the first touchdown of the game, 7-0 Buffalo.
Right: Ken O'Brien and Al Toon decide to tie things up as O'Brien nails Toon and he bolts down field on this 72 yard touchdown pass with 54 seconds remaining in the 1st quarter.

Left: Fuad Reveiz was an integral part of the Jets offense today as he accumulated 11 of the team's 23 points on field goals and extra points.
Right: James Hasty's hot day starts with this interception of Jim Kelly which he turns around, turns on the Jets, and flies to the end zone on a 51 yard touchdown return to give the Jets the lead 17 to 10. The Bills would never recover from this demoralizing play.

Left: James Hasty decides to prove that it wasn't a fluke by picking Jim Kelly off again on the very next drive.
Right: Cedric Mack was jealous of Hasty having all the fun and on the 3rd consecutive drive Jim Kelly gets picked off by a Jet defender. This turnover would lead to 3 more points off of a Reveiz field goal.

92_wk1_buf_nyj_4.jpg

Left: Jim Kelly at least put something up on his horrible day so far as he managed to toss this ball to Raghib Ismail. Ismail used his speed to break free and scamper to paydirt for a 64 yard touchdown pass to make it 23-17 Jets with only 4:17 left in the game. Kelly hoping to piece together a comeback drive late in the game after the Bills defense stops the Jets on the following drive.
Right: As Kelly starts to work the field in hopes of late game heroics he is cut short for the 4th time on the night, this time by Erik McMillan as he is picked off with 17 seconds left in the game, sealing the Bills fate.

Game Notes
--------------------------------------------
-Harvey Williams struggled with a 1.6 avg despite the touchdown, and Blair Thomas had a decent 87 yard game but on a 2.7 avg. Upped the run sliders a teeny bit.
-Jim Kelly surprisingly suffered in accuracy today as he threw 4 interceptions and only completed 45% of his passes. Ken O'Brien also only completed 38% of his passes so I upped quarterback accuracy a bit.

Can Dave Krieg Lead Lions to Greatness?

AP - This off-season was a big year for the Detroit Lions as their already prolific offense, thanks to the run game of Barry Sanders, got even better. During free agency the Lions made a splash and signed veteran quarterback Dave Krieg to a 2 year deal. It'll be interesting to see how the Lions offense adapts to their new signal caller.

There's no doubt the Lions are a monster on offense thanks to their outstanding run game in Barry Sanders, however, their passing game has left much to be desired as of late. A quarterback controversy has brewed between Erik Kramer and Rodney Peete. It started in 1990 when Rodney Peete was the teams go-ahead starter. While he did lead the team to an 11-5 record and a playoff birth, it was more to do with Sanders 1,621 yards on the ground than Peete's production. However Peete did have 2,356 yards a 52% completion rate and 16 touchdowns with 19 picks for a 63.0 quarterback rating. Lae in the season he went down for one game that Erik Kramer stepped in for and went 21 of 35 (60%) for 224 yards 1 touchdown and 2 picks for a 64.4 quarterback rating. In the playoffs Kramer won a game for the Lions before they lost and went back to Detroit. However this started the insider talk about having Kramer start over Peete.

In 1991 the Lions continued with Rodney Peete as the starter after a tough training camp battle and decided he knew the offense best. During the regular season however he struggled with 1,407 yards a 49% completion rate with 9 touchdowns and 13 interceptions for a 59.0 quarterback rating. Peete then suffered a minor injury that would keep him out for a couple of weeks but the Lions took this opportunity to make the call and make the switch. Erik Kramer was then named the starter for the remainder of the season and he had 1,057 yards with a 50% completion rate and 6 touchdowns with 7 interceptions for a 59.0 quarterback rating. Once again, while not amazing numbers, he still barely managed to edge out Peete in production, all the while having less turnovers. However Barry Sanders once again was the main catalyst for Detroit's success as they repeated an 11-5 playoff birth season off of his 396 carries for 1,800 yards and 12 touchdowns.

This year however will be completely different. The Detroit Lions decided they had enough of quarterback carousels and mediocre production and went and grabbed one of the better quarterbacks in the league in ex-Seahawk, Dave Krieg. The 5 consecutive Pro Bowls player brings skill to the quarterback position that the Lions have not had for some time. He has thrown for five 3,000+ yard seasons, 2 in the last 3, something the Lions have not seen since Gary Danielson in 1984. Krieg has also managed to throw 21+ touchdowns for 7 out of the last 8 seasons. A Lions quarterback has not thrown 21+ touchdowns since Earl Morrall did it in 1963, 29 years ago. There is no doubt that Krieg is a different beast that the Lions are unfamiliar with, and it will completely change the way the team plays offense. Along with Dave Krieg came Webster Slaughter to the Lions, a top tier wide receiver who will be joining Richard Johnson to make the Lions passing game even more aggressive. Slaughter and Johnson will become one of the better skilled tandems in the league and with Willie Green progressing at the 3rd wide receiver spot the Lions are set at that position.

The only thing the Lions need to take care of is to get Krieg gelled with the rest of the offense. Once they click it could become a dangerous thing as defenses try to figure out whether to protect against Krieg's cannon arm, or crowd the box in hopes of stopping the elusive Barry Sanders. The first team that will get a crack at stopping the Lions are the Chicago Bears so if any defense will be capable of doing so they are definitely one of the more capable ones.

Game Summary: What started out a close contest quickly became one-sided late in the game as these two powerhouse teams with new additions tried to work out the kinks early in the season.

In the very first drive of the game Lions fans cheered their newest addition when Dave Krieg bombed a ball 65 yards to Richard Johnson for the opening touchdown. Lions fans could already feel their pride beaming as they finally added a passing game to Detroit. However on the following drive the Bears offensive unit was methodical and unfazed as they marched down field and capped it off with a goaline touchdown push by Neal Anderson to tie the game up. On the following drive Dave Krieg had a case of deja vu as he lobbed the ball 68 yards to Richard Johnson for a second touchdown. The Lions domination on offense was surprising to the Chicago secondary and Detroit fans were going crazy at this preview of what is to come for the season. Then the Lions defense stepped up and stopped the Bears, giving them the ball back. This time however Krieg was brought down to reality as he tossed an interception to Ron Rivera who essentially sucked all momentum Detroit had for the rest of the game. On the following drive Neal Anderson scampered for his 2nd touchdown of the game already on a 10 yard run to make it 14-14.

In the second quarter the Lions did nothing but punt or miss field goals. Scott Norwood attempted a late 55 yarder that was short leaving the Lions score-less in the 2nd quarter despite picking off a Mark Vlasic pass with Ray Crockett's great hands. The Bears were also unable to capitalize as they punted the ball in what was a back-and-fourth defensive struggle.

In the 3rd quarter things started the same until the Bears offense got close enough to let Kevin Butler hit a 47 yard field goal and give the Bears the lead for the first time in the game 17-14 with 4:27 left. On the following Bear drive Vlasic threw his 2nd interception, this time to Lions linebacker Michael Cofer. The Lions tried to capitalize on the turnover as their offense got them into field goal range but once again Scott Norwood was unable to get it as he was wide right on a 47 yard field goal attempt, leaving points off the board. The Bears decided to put their knife up to the Lions jugular as Vlasic stepped it up and ended up hitting youngster Ed McCaffrey on a 5 yard pass for a touchdown. The score would put the Bears in a commanding 24-14 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter.

In the final quarter of play the Lions at up the first 6 minutes of the quarter but ended up being forced to punt. The Bears made them pay for that as their offense marched down field and Neal Anderson ran in a 13 yard touchdown for his 3rd on the night. The final touchdown would be the stake in Detroit's heart as the Bears won 31 to 14.

Left: Dave Krieg's first pass as a Detroit Lion is a big one as he hits Richard Johnson on this 65 yard bomb for the touchdown, giving Lions fans hope for the future.
Right: The Bears managed to answer right back as they march down the field and then Neal Anderson pounds through the goal line on this 1 yard touchdown run.

Left: The Chicago Bears cornerback barely misses tipping this ball away. The perfectly thrown football by Dave Krieg nestles nicely into Richard Johnson's hands as he blazes untouched 68 yards for his 2nd touchdown making it 14-7 Detroit.
Right: The Bears decide to stop Dave Krieg's momentum as Ron Rivera manages to intercept this pass and give the Bears the ball back.

92_wk1_chi_det_3.jpg

Left: Capitalizing off of the Ron Rivera interception the Bears use the short field to their advantage and have Neal Anderson dive into the end zone on this 10 yard run for the score to tie the game at 14 a piece.
Right: Ray Crockett manages to read Herman Moore's route perfectly and gets in position to intercept this Mark Vlasic pass.

Left: Bears kicker Kevin Butler nails this 47 yard field goal that gives the Bears the lead for first time in the game 17-14.
Right: Mark Vlasic makes his second mistake of the game as Michael Cofer hides behind the size of his d-line and waits for the perfect moment to raise his hands up and snag this pass out of the sky.

92_wk1_chi_det_5.jpg

Left: In a defensive misread Vlasic manages to find Ed McCaffrey left wide open near the sidelines. However McCaffrey almost lost his footing as he had to use his hands to keep him up as he changed directions and tumbled into the end zone on this 5 yard pass.
Right: With solid blocking from Brad Muster and newly acquired tight end Pat Beach, Neal Anderson makes a great cut near the end zone and walks in for a 13 yard touchdown run to put the Bears over the top 31 to 14.

Game Notes
--------------------------------------------
-Barry Sanders struggled to run, granted it was the Bears defense but it shouldn't have been as bad. Despite that though Neal Anderson ran well. (seems to be a pattern of 1 hb doing shitty and the other doing decent)
-Dave Krieg had a good debut but unfortunately seemed to stop caring after the 1st quarter as nothing else happened for him all day.
-Webster Slaughter had an inauspicious opening as a Lion as well as he only had 1 catch for 8 yards and 2 drops. So much for becoming a wide receiver power tandem with Richard Johnson.
-Neal Anderson was just plain unstoppable.

Do Or Die Time For Jeff George?

AP - The Indianapolis Colts are hoping that Jeff George is going to pan out into the franchise quarterback that they expected him to become when they originally drafted him in 1990. The #1 pick has spent the past two seasons starting for the Colts who went from 9-7 in 1990 to 7-9 in 1991. This year the Colts are expecting better things out of George.

In 1990 the Colts had a solid 9-7 year thanks to the great running attack of Eric Dickerson. Jeff George did his best to move the passing game along but Dickerson's dominance only allowed him to go for 2,283 yards, 52% completion rate, with 14 touchdowns and 14 interceptions for a 63.4 quarterback rating. The Colts leading receiver was Bill Brooks with 66 catches, needless to say the Colts passing game suffered the rookie kinks. George however did a good job of leading the Colts to an above .500 record as well as keeping his turnovers to a minimum with a 1:1 ratio of scores to picks. This was a solid foundation to improve upon over the next few seasons.

Unfortunately for Indianapolis improvement is not what Jeff George did in his sophomore year as the teams starting quarterback. In 1991 the Colts regressed to a 7-9 record with George throwing for 2,506 yards, 58% completion rate with 16 touchdowns but 21 interceptions for a 66.4 quarterback rating. While numbers wise he had more yards, a better completion rate and 2 more touchdowns, he also had 150% interceptions with 21 total. Not only did George had 21 picks but he fumbled the football 9 times giving him 30 total turnovers for the Colts, a large reason for their lack of success.

This year however is going to be tough for George as he no longer has the star ability of Eric Dickerson in his backfield. While the Colts did acquire ex-Bronco runningback, Bobby Humphrey, there is a big difference between Humphrey and one of the all-time leading rushers Eric Dickerson. With Dickerson leaving teams may be able to focus more on attacking the pass game and George is going to suffer. If Jeff George doesn't improve here in his 3rd year as the team's starting quarterback they may have to start thinking about making a change. After three full seasons he should be improving and the Colts will have to see that tangible effort this year.

If Jeff George can improve then the Colts passing game should do well but if he doesn't they may just prolong their re-building period and remain at the bottom of the barrel in their division. Jeff George will get his first chance of the 1992 season to prove to the Colts that he is the franchise quarterback their looking for against the New England Patriots in week 1. However if he doesn't prove himself he may end up just being another glorified "cannon-arm" quarterback that doesn't have the accuracy to play in the big leagues.

Game Summary: Well there was no question from early on in this game that the Colts came to play. After an initial defensive struggled the Colts managed to march into New England territory and Eric Dickerson replacement, Bobby Humphrey, managed to bust out a 33 yard touchdown run to the chagrin of New England fans. The score would be the only significant play of a surprisingly defensive first quarter and it was made with only 1:02 remaining.

In the second quarter things started out the same with back-to-back punts before a turnover occured when Jeff George threw an interception to Patriots veteran safety, Fred Marion. Marion managed to juke his way 40 yards to the Colts 29 yard line before being tackled barely missing the opportunity to return it for a touchdown. The Patriots capitalized on the opportunity to put their first points on the board when ex-Cowboy kicker, Ken Willis knocked in a 42 yard field goal. On the following Patriots drive the same thing happened as Willis hit one from 33 yards out to make it a 7-6 score at the end of the first half. In what was supposed to be an offensive shoot-out the Patriots and Colts ended up scoring only 13 combined points in the first half.

The third quarter started off with a bang when Steve Beuerlein accidentally tossed an interception to injury-recovered John Baylor. Baylor darted 23 yards for the touchdown return to put the Colts ahead 14 to 6. After three punt drives the Colts came back and scored again on a 31 yard field goal by kicker Dean Biasucci.

The fourth quarter of this game is when the Colts offense decided to finally start playing the way they were expected to this game. It took 45 minutes but it seemed as if this was the quarter where the Patriots defense was gassed and had finally been beaten down. The start of the fourth quarter for the Colts however was rocky as Jeff George tossed his second interception, this time to Patriots linebacker Vincent Brown. On the following drive a determined Patriots team went for it on 4th down only to fall short and turn the ball over at the Colts 34 yard line. Fans were outraged that the Patriots did not attempt the field goal there because it would've cut the Colts lead to a single possession of 8 points. However instead they went for it and failed and the Colts added insult to injury by driving down and having Biasucci add another 3 points on the board making it 20-6 Indianapolis. In a desperate attempt to get back into the game an aggressive passing attack by Beuerlein back-fired as Colts linebacker Fredd Young picked the ball out of the air. The next drive the Colts would not pull back on the throttle out of mercy as Jeff George hit Bill Brooks on a 15 yard touchdown pass. Irving Fryar made a mistake on the ensuing Patriots drive by fumbling the football after a Michael Ball hit and the Colts recovered at the Patriots 23 yard line. The short field made it easy for Jeff George to hit Jessie Hester on a 12 yard touchdown pass to completely pull the Colts away and dash any hopes of a comeback by the Patriots with a score of 34 to 6 with 53 seconds left in the game. The Patriots did their best and drove down field but with the clock working against them the game ended on the Colts 4 yard line.

Left: Bobby Humphrey does his best Eric Dickerson impression as he gallops over a New England Patriot defender on his way to a 33 yard touchdown run, the first score of the game.
Right: In an awkward play a diving Bill Brooks can't catch the football but ends up fingering the side of the ball which pops it up into the air. An aware Fred Marion manages to be at the right place at the right time and surprisingly picks the ball off which he returns 40 yards, deep into Colts territory.

Left: Ex-Cowboy kicker Ken Willis was knocking in field goals for the Patriots all day. He started with this 42 yarder that was the first score by the Patriots of the game.
Right: John Baylor had an ACL sprain last week and it was questionable whether or not he would play in today's game. Luckily for the Colts he did as he managed to intercept this Steve Beuerlein pass and returned it to the house, 23 yards for the touchdown. The score would put the Colts up 14 to 6, and demoralize the Patriots offense.

Left: Vincent Brown was in perfect position to easily snag this Jeff George interception, his 2nd thrown pick of the night.
Right: A sea of Colts players make the Patriots fans wonder just what Steve Beuerlein saw on this play. Out of the three defenders linebacker Fredd Young was the one who stepped up and picked it off with only 2:03 remaining in the game.

Left: Jeff George turned on his ability in the fourth quarter as he managed to hit Bill Brooks on this 15 yard touchdown strike which pulled the Colts way ahead 27 to 6.
Right: Not stopping while their opponents down the Colts continued to put on the pressure offensively. Jeff George tossed another touchdown pass as he hit Jessie Hester on this 12 yarder. Hester barely busted through the goal line for the score to make it 34 to 6 with only 53 seconds left in the game.

Game Notes
--------------------------------------------
-I was surprised how much the CPU had the Colts passing late in the game.
-I might up the QB ACC sliders again.
-If you take out Humphrey's 33 yard run then both HB's underperformed a little.

Browns Sign Lewis Tillman

AP - Earlier today in an interesting maneuver the Cleveland Browns signed 4th year youngster Lewis Tillman to a contract. The contract is reportedly a 1 year, $1.02 million dollar deal with a $180,000 signing bonus.

The Cleveland Browns have plenty of depth and the runningback position and that was just upgraded even more. They already have a great starter in Leroy Hoard who has emerged into a powerhouse runner the past two seasons. Behind Leroy Hoard the Browns acquired ex-Chief Barry Word at some point. Meanwhile challenging Word is Eric Metcalf who is getting part time playtime out of the backfield. Finally it appears after that, sitting 4th on the depth chart, will be Lewis Tillman.

Tillman was originally drafted by the New York Giants in 1989 and has spent a few years there trying to make a name for himself. Unfortunately the young player has been unable to fully realize his potential and he was cut by the team earlier this year. Tillman went through free agency and was contacted by a couple of teams, namely the Vikings and Saints, however he ended up signing with neither. As a result he continued to sit and wait until another opportunity arrived, and now its here, in Cleveland.

It'll be a tough uphill battle for the youngster to get any playing time in Cleveland but who knows what may happen. With Hoard, Ward, and Metcalf sitting in front of him he'll certainly have some talented individuals with which he can grow and learn from for the future.

Game Summary: Another surprisingly defensive game in the beginning that finally picked up in the fourth quarter. The game started with Eric Metcalf fumbling the football away handing it to the Chiefs. The Chiefs took advantage of this and put the first points on the board on a 46 yard field goal by Nick Lowery. After that there were 6 consecutive drives that resulted in the teams punting. The final drive of the first quarter ended with Eddie Murray, ex-Lions kicker, knocking in a 31 yard field goal for his first as a Brown to tie the game.

The second quarter had more fireworks as the Chiefs ate up a lot of clock in their opening drive, grinding their way down field until Lowery game in for an 18 yard field goal as the Chiefs were unable to penetrate at the goal line but wanted the points. The Browns however answered back on the very next drive as Leroy Hoard busted a 17 yard run for the touchdown to make it 10-6 Browns and give them the lead for the first time in the game. The remainder of the first half was a defensive struggle as the Chiefs punted away and the Browns couldn't setup in time for a late field goal.

The third quarter started with, you guessed it, another punt until the next drive when Chiefs quarterback Steve Pelluer tossed an interception to Browns linebacker Eddie Johnson. A few plays later though the Browns quarterback, Bernie Kosar, was injured and went down. Not fearing anything the Browns sent in rookie Ty Detmer to see what he was made of. Ty Detmer came in and threw 3 passes before he got rolled up on and was injured as well, sending in the third and final quarterback on the Browns roster, Jeff Francis. After a few more punts back and fourth once again Eddie Murray ended the quarter by hitting a field goal, this time from only 21 yards out, to make it 13-6 Browns.

The 4th quarter started and the Chiefs ate up the clock as best they could taking half of the quarter's time away before turning over the ball on a failed 4th and inches play. The following drive Jeff Francis started to lead the Browns down field but, unbelievably, he too got injured. Francis was 5 of 6 for 58 yards before succumbing to an injury that would knock him out and leave the Browns without a single quarterback left on their roster. In a desperate measure the Browns ended up sending out punter, Rick Tuten, to take the helm. Tuten struggled to a 2 for 6 for 19 yard outing but did what he had to do, hand the ball off, very well. Needless to say the Browns struggled and Tuten ended up punting it away. On the following drive the Chiefs marched down and the Nigerian nightmare, Christian Okoye, pounded for a 5 yard touchdown that tied the game up at 13 each with only 1:46 left. The following drive was once again marred by the lack of a passing game with Rick Tuten under center and they were forced to punt, leaving the Chiefs 1:21 and plenty of time outs to get a score. The Chiefs took their time and methodically made it deep into Cleveland territory. In fact the Browns almost ended up crossing the goal line but with only a few seconds left they ended up bringing out Nick Lowery. Lowery easily knocked in the 20 yard field goal to win the game for the Chiefs, 16 to 13 as time ticked off the score board.

Left: Lloyd Burress does a great job of smashing into Eric Metcalf on this punt return. The resulting hit would create a fumble that veteran Chief lineman, Bill Maas would manage to scoop up.
Right: Eddie Murray knocks in this 31 yard field goal. This would be his first field goal as a Cleveland Brown after spending some time with the Lions. The score would tie the game up at 3 a piece.

Left: Leroy Hoard finds a gaping hole in the defense and bolts through it. He then bounds his way 17 yards to the paydirt to make it 10 to 6 Cleveland with 57 seconds left in the first half.
Right: The very first drive for the Chiefs in the 2nd half didn't have a good result as Steve Pelluer ended up tossing this interception to Browns linebacker, Eddie Johnson.

92_wk1_cle_kc_3.jpg

Left: With Bernie Kosar hurt the Browns took the opportunity to see what drafted rookie Ty Detmer could do. Detmer went in and threw 3 passes before he ended up crumpling onto the ground injured.
Right: Later in the game in the 4th quarter, 3rd string quarterback Jeff Francis started lighting up the Chiefs secondary. His 5 of 6 pass attempts were spreading the defense until he too ended up getting hurt. Resulting in Rick Tuten, the Browns punter, becoming the quarterback.

Left: Christian Okoye makes the key score for the Chiefs with 1:46 left in the game. He manages to plow through the line on this 5 yard run that would tie the game up at 13.
Right: As the seconds tick away veteran kicker Nick Lowery pops in another game winner from 20 yards out. Chiefs win 16 to 13.

Game Notes
--------------------------------------------
-Good running from both teams.
-TONS of QB injuries, I couldn't believe Rick Tuten was quarterbacking for the Browns by the end of the game!

Cleveland Browns Desperately Need Quarterbacks, Trade & Sign!!

AP - After the first game of the season the Cleveland Browns took a big hit. In that game they suffered three injuries, all to quarterbacks on the teams roster. As a result the Browns are being forced to look elsewhere for new signal callers to bring in and quickly learn the team's offense.

The game started with Bernie Kosar going down. Kosar has been the Browns skilled starting quarterback for eight years now but the past two have been marred by injury. Kosar's injury however was prepared for by the drafting of rookie Ty Detmer to play 2nd string. Detmer came in and tossed the ball around only to get hurt himself. As a result the Cleveland Browns went with their third string quarterback, Jeff Francis. Francis almost finished the game playing until the 4th quarter when the Chiefs defenders caused their third quarterback injury. The Browns ended up having to have punter Rick Tuten finish out the game.

After the fallout of the game the Browns knew that they needed to bring fresh blood at the quarterback position in order to compete this season. As a result the Browns went into free agency and ended up signing Scott Campbell (77 Ovr). Campbell is a 31 year old veteran backup quarterback. The Browns picked him up to a 1 yar, $1.81 million dollar contract with a $330k signing bonus. Scott Campbell was the starter for the Atlanta Falcons back in 1987 where he had 1,728 yards and 11 touchdowns with 14 interceptions. So Campbell definitely has starting experience in the league which is extremely valuable for a backup quarterback. He never really got a second chance in Atlanta though because of the emergence of Chris Miller and the drafting last season of Brett Favre pushing Campbell into the 3rd string spot.

However not satisfied with just adding Scott Campbell the Browns went out and ended up trading away for a quarterback who is going to be their starter for the next several weeks. The Browns ended up sending 3rd string halfback, Barry Word (82 Ovr) and their 3rd round pick to the Phoenix Cardinals in exchange for backup quarterback, Chris Chandler (79 Ovr), their 4th round pick, and their 7th round pick. This trade gives the Cardinals needed depth behind Johnny Johnson in the run game. However with Anthony Thompson playing well in pre-season Word's addition could spell trouble for his progression as a player. Meanwhile the Cardinals unload their crowded quarterback depth to a team where Chandler will end up seeing playing time. With the Cardinals having drafted both David Klingler and Tommy Maddox this season they believe they have the talent behind starter Timm Rosenbach in case he goes down, so Chandler became expendable. Chandler started 16 games in his first two seasons in the NFL as an Indianapolis Colt to mediocre success. Then in 1990 he joined the Buccaneers where he backed up Vinny Testaverde for the majority of the season only playing in a single game and throwing a pick in it. Then he ended up signing with the Cardinals last year and was 2nd string to Rosenbach. The Cardinals brought him in with the intention of eventually becoming the teams starter but the surprise emergence of Timm Rosenbach as a viable quarterback forced Chandler to remain on the bench. Chandler did get to play in one game where he went 19 of 40 for 248 yards and 2 touchdowns with 2 picks but other than that he rode the pine once more.

Chandler has improved greatly in camp and pre-season over the past few years but the opportunity to make an impact hasn't been available to him. Now with this trade to the Cleveland Browns and with Bernie Kosar out this will be the chance that Chandler has been waiting for. If Chandler can succeed enough to keep the Browns playoff chances alive when Kosar returns from injury then they will consider him having fulfilled his job. He may not be in Cleveland long as the vagabond quarterback continues his career but this could be the audition that lands him the starting role in another town.
