Remember The 90's?: Re-Living Greatness

This is actually running on Madden 2004 on the PC heh.

The latest version I have is 09 on the 360 but it took so long to create the initial rosters that I stuck with it. Plus it's much easier for things like pictures/stats and stuff on the PC than the consoles.

I'll try to put something up today.

Cleveland Signs Kicker Matt Bahr

AP The Cleveland Browns felt they nabbed a key component to their team that was missing when they signed veteran kicker and ex-Lion, Eddie Murray to a contract. Murray has been one of the better kickers in the NFL over the past decade and felt the change of scenery might give him new life. However a torn shoulder thought differently.

Murray suffered a torn shoulder injury during an attempted tackle on special teams against the Buccaneers. On a Buccaneer kickoff return Murray tore his shoulder and was carted off the field. Doctors report that the injury could take around ten weeks to heal and because of that punter Rick Tuten had to kick 3 field goals that day. With Murray out for an extended period of time the Browns were left without a kicker and had to scramble, but didn’t need to for too long as Matt Bahr had been waiting for this opportunity for awhile.

Matt Bahr (81 Ovr) is a 13 year veteran and was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 6th round of the 1979 NFL Draft. He spent a couple years with the Steelers, part of a season with the 49ers, and then the other half of 1981 with the Cleveland Browns. He played for the Browns from 1981 to 1989 before he left and joined the Giants where he kicked the past couple of seasons. Bahr spent the past off-season trying to find a new team but never settled on one and decided to wait it out to get the contract that he felt he deserved. The Packers and Giants both low-balled him with offers but Bahr didn’t want to play second fiddle and wanted the opportunity to start on a team. Like every year a surprise injury occurs to a top kicker and the team needed a replacement, this year it was the Cleveland Browns, his old team where he made his name for himself. The Browns signed 36 year old Matt Bahr to 1 year $870,000 contract with a $110,000 signing bonus. Bahr will play during the 10 week period that Eddie Murray will be out before he will be replaced by a healthy Murray.

This 10 week audition time will be what Matt Bahr will need to show other teams he’s still capable of playing in this league at his old age. However if he goes unsigned once again this off-season then Bahr might have to take serious consideration to retirement.

Alonzo's Put a Spell On You

AP - Alonzo Spellman, a name that is slowly making a name for himself in the NFL despite not being wanted by the team that drafted him this season. Spellman was merely at the right place at the right time in what is turning out to be one of the biggest feel good stories of the year.

Alonzo Spellman was originally projected to be a 2nd round selection as the 4th best defensive end on the boards behind Robert Porcher, Marco Coleman, and Keith Hamilton. However off the field issues had plagued Spellman this year as he dealt with his diagnosis of bipolar disorder.

Spellman stopped taking his medication and ran into problems with the law. Most notably, he had a manic episode on July 23, 1991 in which he disrupted a flight from Cincinnati to Philadelphia. Spellman initially suggested that the flight was going to crash, then became verbally abusive to other passengers and threatened members of the flight crew. The plane was forced to make an emergency landing. Spellman was released, but then destroyed some property at his brother's home and was taken to a psychiatric hospital. He was later arrested on charges of interference with a flight crew. Although doctors confirmed that he had bipolar disorder, Spellman was determined to be legally sane and spent 18 months in federal prison, before he was released and declared just in time for the NFL draft, missing out on his senior year. (fictional liberty with the date of this incident).

As a result his stock dropped, and teams overlooked him because of his character issues including the Seahawks and Cowboys who drafted Chuck Smith and Roy Barker respectively ahead of Spellman despite being lesser prospects out of college. However one team felt they could not ignore his talent when he was still available with the 27th selection of the 4th round in the 1992 NFL Draft, the Houston Oilers. The Oilers took a gamble after selecting Shane Dronett, another person ranked lower than Spellman the round right before as insurance in case Spellman didn't work out. After arriving at camp Spellman worked hard for Houston but the Oilers soon began to realize that they needed to make some cuts to keep their team together. As a result Spellman became a cap casualty before he even had the chance to play his first NFL start. Spellman was cut by the Oilers who felt their defensive ends Sean Jones, William Fuller, Robert Young, and Shane Dronett were solid enough.

Spellman waded around in the free agent pool before he settled on signing with the Los Angeles Raiders. The Raiders needed a young upstart defensive end to help solidify their aging line with Howie Long (32), and Greg Townsend (31). With only Anthony Smith a 25 year old backup (65 overall) also on the squad the Raiders were in desperate need of some line help, and Spellman was the man that would heal them. Spellman signed a 6 year $10.14 million dollar contract with the Raiders and was slated to play the backup role to Raiders star lineman Greg Townsend (97 Ovr) for the season. Yet once again another opportunity came knocking for Spellman.

During the regular season Greg Townsend suffered an injury that would end up being more severe than originally predicted. According to team doctors Townsend would end up missing the majority of the regular season. Although it was bittersweet Alonzo Spellman felt he could get the job done.

Opposite left end Howie Long, Alonzo Spellman soon became a force to be reckoned with. Despite only playing a short amount of time so far Alonzo Spellman has already had an amazing 8 sack season for the Raiders, including a huge 2 tackle, 2 sack, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery, 1 deflection, and 1 safety game in the Raiders 15-13 victory over the Cleveland Browns in week 7. In the last 4 weeks Spellman has had just as many sacks and has 8 so far this year. However there's still another problem Spellman must face in the near future to continue his success.

In the next couple of weeks it appears that Greg Townsend will be healthy enough to return to the Raiders starting lineup. However the question is, do the Raiders want him too? Spellman has the hot hand right now and is doing an amazing job of grabbing the opponents quarterbacks alongside Howie Long, and can the team afford to loose this advantage by having a 1-tackle-so-far-this-season Townsend return. Only time will tell how the Raiders will resolve this issue, but for the meantime you can be sure that Spellman is making the most of the opportunities he's being given.

49er Duo Both Set to Move Up All-Time Boards Next Week?

AP - Next week's game against divison rival Phoenix Cardinals, may turn out to be a very personal game for both 49ers quarterback Joe Montana, and wide receiver Jerry Rice. Luckily for them this historic moment will occur at home in candle-stick park and not on the road as Rice attempts to become the all-time leading touchdown receiver, and Montana the 2nd all time touchdown passer.

Montana and Rice have had an outstanding season after the 49ers tumultuous 0-4 start to the year. Since then the 49ers have rallied and gone 7 and 1 to give them a 7-5 record, just 1 game behind the Cardinals. So not only does this game have records on the line, it also will swing the division lead in favor of the 49ers with a victory over the current leading Cardinals. The 49ers will need production from their two offensive stars if they hope to overtake Phoenix.

Jerry Rice only needs 1 touchdown to surpass Don Hutson for 2nd all-time with 99 touchdown on their careers. However the bigger number he's looking at is ex-Seahawk Steve Largent's 100 touchdown receptions. If Rice catches two touchdowns this week against the Cardinals secondary he will be the all-time leading touchdown receiver, no easy feat. So far this season Jerry Rice has had 67 catches for exactly 1,000 yards and 7 receiving touchdowns. Barring any injury there's no doubt he will continue his streak of pro bowls with his great performance so far. However Rice's game will depend on whether or not Montana can get the protection he needs to continue making the throws that he's made look so easy all season long.

Joe Montana also has his own personal goals for next week against the Cardinals, and thats to throw two touchdowns during regulation to put him as the 2nd best all-time passing touchdown leader in NFL history. Montana will be going up against history next week as he attempts to take down one of the biggest names the NFL has ever seen in Johnny Unitas. Unitas' 290 touchdowns was only surpassed by Fran Tarkenton (and decimated with 342) in the passing era, and now Montana is setting his sights for it as well. Against a rough Cardinals passing defense Montana will have to evade defenders and get his way to paydirt to move up the all-time rankings. Last time the 49ers played the Cardinals a mere two weeks ago the 49ers ended up demolishing the Cardinals 32 to 20, and Montana threw 3 touchdowns in that came, so it's easily conceivable that he will get two next week.

49er fans and football fans in general have a lot to look forward to in next weeks niners, cardinals, game. Whether you like San Francisco or not you have to at leats acknowledge that you are watching greatness take place. There's no doubt that a tandem like this will not exist for many years to come. Montana to Rice, in infamy.

Yeah last year at 15-1 with Bo Jackson they were amazing, super surprised the Raiders robbed them in the AFC Champ game to get to the big one.

This year however Jackson's slowed down a little, but the team is still dangerous. This weeks 34-9 victory over those same Raiders is just the proof needed. I was actually about to type up an article about the Oilers and Lions both being the hot teams right now with 6-game win streaks.

Lol yeah it was Jason Hanson galore, and Matt Bahr managed to knock in the only score for Cleveland.

The only Atlanta Touchdown was late in the 4th when Chris Miller tossed a TD pass, but otherwise it was all FG's and defense.

Deion Sanders had 2 picks, and Jesse Tuggle had 4 sacks. So defensively the Falcons were crushing. Bernie Kosar had a rare horrible game where he had 0 td's and 3 picks on the night.

So far after Week 15's games here's an update for those guys.

So Eric Metcalf is still playing second fiddle to Leroy Hoard. I wish they'd involve him more in the passing game like they did in real life. I'm not sure if it's next year or the following season when he converts to a WR, so we'll see how that pans out. He's still done decently with the limited carries he's gotten, and has been a solid return man.

Steve Tasker hasn't done much of anything. Like in real life he was a gadget player so he's done everything just more of a jack of all trades master of none deal as he has had carries, catches, and both kinds of returns. Normally he'd have more returns but since the in-game Bills drafted Raghib Ismail he's their main return man this season with his speed.

Mel Gray has been seemingly phased out of the offense in any regard except when it comes to kick and punt returns, but boy does he know how to do that. Gray is currently leading the league in punt return average, yards, and touchdowns with 3. As of Week 15 he's slated to go to the Pro Bowl, the only person I could see threatening that is Dave Meggett who has 2 punt returns for touchdowns so far.

Richard Dent Joins Elite Group

AP - When you think of some of the greatest defensive lineman currently playing the game Richard Dent's name pops up. After his outstanding 1990 season where Richard Dent had 20 sacks he etched his name in NFL history, which is something he is continuing to do two years later.

The only active player with more sacks in the NFL currently is Lawrence Taylor. Otherwise Richard Dent has no equal, and certainly none at his position. While he may have slowed down in his 32 years of age Dent is still a formidable NFL force. In his prime Dent had two of the best back-to-back years of any defensive lineman in NFL history in just his sophomore and junior NFL seasons in 1984 and 1985. Both Pro Bowl seasons saw him have 17.5 and 17 sacks respectively. He remained a top defensive lineman for the next near decade of his career, but has never quite lived up to those numbers until 1990 when he demolished them with a 20 sack season. There are only 3 players in NFL history who have had better seasons. Mark Gastineau during his prime in 1984 with the New York Jets had a 22 sack season which is currently the all-time NFL record for most sacks in a season. Followed by the recent 1989 21 sack season of Viking Chris Doleman, and the 1987 21 sack season of Eagle Reggie White. With Richard Dent bringing in 4th place with a 20 sack monster year in 1990 at the age of 30.

While 1991 was statistically going to probably be a worse season for Dent that didn't stop him from having another Pro Bowl caliber season with 14 more sacks. It seemed as if Dent had found the fountain of youth and was starting to dominate once more. This season he struggled slightly earlier on but what occurred during week 14 of the 1992 NFL season is something to truly behold.

Last week the Chicago Bears had a tough outing against the Detroit Lions. Dave Krieg and company lit up the Bears secondary with a 30 to 14 victory, but Krieg will most likely still be feeling the results of that game. Why? Because Richard Dent sacked Krieg 5 times in the game. An event that has only happened twice before in NFL history, and Richard Dent accomplished it in week 14 of the 1992 season at the age of 32. It's been 9 years since the last time it happened in 1983. Fred Dean of the 49ers currently holds the NFL record with 6 sacks in a game against New Orleans, during the same season however William Gay of Detroit had 5.5 sacks against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Then along came Richard Dent to pickup the bronze medal with a 5 sack performance earlier this week against those same Detroit Lions.

Richard Dent is a 32 year old monster that continues to dominate young offensive linemen across the league. Despite his age he will most likely have yet another 10+ sack season, which is a feat he has accomplished in 8 out of his 9 seasons as an NFL starter (3 sacks his rookie year, 3 games started). The only thing that may have some Chicago Bears faithful wondering is that Dent only has 1 more year left in his contract and hasn't shown signs of negotiations with the Bears organization. At 33 years old and if he puts another stellar season under his belt he could be a highly coveted free agent after the 1993 season, who wouldn't want somebody with 127 career sacks so far, but the Bears will be hard pressed to find a replacement for his dominant playing ability.

Veteran Linebacker Called To Arms
AP - In the wake of the recent injury to Kansas City Chiefs middle linebacker, Percy Snow, the Chiefs had to find a quick answer to keep chugging along their playoff tracks. Luckily for them a veteran middle linebacker was just waiting for the right opportunity to arise to sign a contract.

Mike Wilcher was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the 1983 NFL Draft in the 2nd round. He remained with the Rams all the way to the end of the 1990 season. Wilcher established himself as a solid middle linebacker with the Rams as a top tackler in the league. However his understated pass rushing abilities also helped L.A. greatly as he acquired 40.5 sacks throughout his 8 year tenure. In 1990 at the age of 30 he still had one of his better years with 89 tackles and 3 sacks, but in this contract year the Rams decided his fate. The off-season would see Mike Wilcher get released as Los Angeles decided to go in another direction. Unfortunately for Wilcher he would wade in the free agency pool for an extensive period of time.

Wilcher was a now 31 year old veteran linebacker that is good enough to make the tackles needed and get a handful of sacks each season. However, his toughness was put into question after a nagging injury all year in 1990 that made him loose some speed, but Wilcher did not loose his demands for monetary compensation. Refusing to take a paycut to play in the NFL the 1991 season would start with Mike Wilcher not being signed to an NFL team. Wilcher would sit in free agency until Week 10 of the regular season when the Phoenix Cardinals called upon his services. The Cardinals lost 2nd middle linebacker Garth Jax to an injury late and were pushing for a long-shot at the wild card. So the Cardinals signed Wilcher and in his short tenure he managed to put together a 38 tackle 2 sack total. Wilcher did just what was asked of him, but once again would find himself in the same situation this year.

In 1992 Wilcher almost signed a contract with the San Francisco 49ers in the off-season but a late snag of ex-Eagle Jesse Small stunted those plans. Wilcher once again would be thrust into free agency as he'd watch the NFL season begin. Finally in week 15 of the regular season Wilcher will be called upon once again, the 32 year old veteran called to arms amidst a heated playoff battle in the AFC. With only the Lions, Dolohins, and Buccaneers clinching their division and the Chiefs division mate Raiders clinching merely a birth, the Chiefs time to act was now. In order to keep their frantic defensive pace a solid replacement for now injured Percy Snow (92 Ovr) would need to be found. With Snow down for at least 9 weeks due to his broken ribs he'd have no chance of returning before the playoffs. Wilcher gladly decided to sign the 1 year $2.40 million dollar contract (with a $310,000 signing bonus) in order to play out the remainder of the season.

With the window of opportunity closing the Chiefs have to make the most of the next few weeks games if they want to head to the 1992 NFL Playoffs, hopefully Wilcher will keep a level of play that their defense has managed throughout the season.

Troy-Aikman---Photofile-Photograph-C10107908.jpeg

The Emergence Of Troy Aikman
AP - As of late Troy Aikman has finally been living up to the hype that surrounded him since he was drafted. It's hard to live up to the hype when you're the #1 overall selection in your draft, it may have taken him a few years, but things are starting to piece together in Dallas.

Troy Aikman was originally drafted by the Dallas Cowboys with the #1 overall selection in the 1989 draft. With that selection they basically branded Aikman as a the team's franchise quarterback for at least the next half-decade, and the pressure was on. Aikman stumbled out of the starting gate to an 0-11 record with only 9 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. Not to mention he had only a 52.9% completion percentage which made many fans of America's team start to wonder if they made the right choice in Aikman. The following season went a little better though as Aikman improved majorly along with the rest of the Cowboys offense. Aikman pieced together a respectable 7-9 season, but it was still below what many had come to expect. Statistically Aikman had 2,843 yards and 16 touchdowns with only 13 interceptions. He however only improved his accuracy to 56%.

The following season was supposed to be the breakout year for Aikman to finally live up to potential. It was his 3rd year pro and the Cowboys were coming off a building season. This year was the year they would tip over the edge and become a playoff team. Aikman did live up to the potential with his leadership as he led the Cowboys to a 9-7 season. However those 9 wins, in a tough year, were not enough to land Dallas in the playoffs. In 1991 Aikman had actually regressed statistically as he had 2,610 yards and 17 touchdowns but 17 interceptions as well. His knack for turning the ball over needed to be changed, something he started in the pros as he was normally a more careful college quarterback.

This season however all the planets and stars have aligned and all is right in the world as Troy Aikman is doing his best, specifically these past few weeks, to keep Dallas in the hunt. Right now in a tough division the Cowboys are 3rd at 10-4. That's right, 3rd with a 10-4 record behind the 10-4 Giants and the 11-3 Eagles. However so far this year Aikman has a 60+ completion percentage and in the last two games has lit up defenses like his life is on the line. In week 14 against the Saints he went 20 of 28 for 289 yards and 5 touchdowns, a new career high for a single game. This past week Aikman continued his success by having a solid game against the Green Bay Packers where he went 21 of 35 for 264 yards and 2 more touchdowns, all without throwing a single interception or a fumble.

Troy Aikman is the cog that Dallas needs to start turning in order to take it to the next level as a franchise. If the Cowboys want to go back to their glory days and start dominance in a new decade they are going to have to have Aikman succeed. So far Aikman is answering the call, but the question will be, can he keep this up?
