Bottom line: I can forgive human error. I'll be mad at first, but shit happens. I have a newfound respect for the job these guys have to do.

But that being said, I have no sympathy for the scabs that didn't even know the rules of the game.

Its not the scabs fault that they are not capable or trained properly.

Blame Goodell and the greedy owners for creating this situation in the 1st place.

now the NFL has to spend more money because now they realize they are going to need trained understudies/back up refs, to avoid anything like this again

Someone has to cross the picket line... There's a reason the NFL couldn't get FBS or even FCS refs. These guys never had any realistic chance of being NFL officials beyond this time and they jumped on it.

It was an opportunistic move on their part and I can't fault them for that but they knew they were not NFL caliber officials and that's why they took this opportunity when they did because it nullified their chances of ever officiating a pro game again, save for another ref lockout.

Actually, one of the sticking points of the negotiation was that the NFL wanted to employ something like three extra full tome "standby" crews that could replace any of the current crews based on perfromance. Since the refs only get paid for the games they work, this did not go over very well with the union. It looks like a version of that plan will happen:

Beginning with the 2013 season, the NFL will have the option of hiring a number of officials on a full-time basis to work year-round, including on the field. The NFL will have the option to retain additional officials for training and development purposes, and may assign those additional officials to work NFL games. The number of additional officials will be determined by the NFL.

Also, on the pension issue, from what I understand the pensions are going away after 5 years, so the union lost that one.

I understood that it went away after 5 years or until the official reached 20 years of service.

I don't need to forgive these replacements. They haven't gone out their with intentions to do a lousy job. They are really trying. It's a tough job. I feel bad for them. These poor replacement refs are just way over their heads.
