I don’t think its too far off to say that the scabs had no clue when it came to procedural calls, but as compared to the judgmental calls it probably is a wash. I told my wife Sunday that the NFL was going to get something done soon, because the refs became the story of every game. IMO the announcers critiqued the scabs to unfair amounts and fans just lined up to take shots as well. As it has been mentioned people forget that they hate the regular refs as well, so this will be interesting, but I don't expect that same sort of venom.

Great post. "Level headed" ralaw can always been counted on to bring the even handed, rational opinions.

I'd also like to point out that the replay official on Monday night was former NFL referee Phil Luckett (you know, the guy who blew the coin toss in the PIT/DET Thanksgiving debacle many years ago). He's been with the league for decades, and as the replay official (replay officials are not part of the same union and are not locked out) is just as responsible for the bevy of replay gaffs that took place on the final sequence. In fact, you can argue that he is more responsible than the scab ref, because Luckett has been around forever and should be expected to know the obscure rules more so than the scab.

Also, former highly respected former NFL referee Gerry Austin (who I believe at one point was the head of all officials, but I could be wrong) explained the simultaneous catch rule incorrectly on ESPN to Tirico & Gruden. He got the rule wrong.

It was a tricky, non routine situation that the entire country had the benefit of a million relays to analyse. Go back and listen to the ESPN feed. Tirico is screaming "simultaneous catch". Gruden is confused. Check the chat logs on this site. Almost nobody was screaming INT until after the replays. Many people said things like "the refs cant win with this one".

But now we are all pretending that the refs blew a super obvious call, in order to fit the narrative that these guys are RUINING THE LIFEBLOOD OF THE GREAT NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE THAT WE ALL LOVE (ffs Brees, just die already).

They blew the call on the field, and they completely mangled the replay process from start to finish. It was a debacle. And based on the fact that we now know Phil Luckett & Gerry Austin don't even know the rules, none of you m'fers can convince me that the real refs would have gotten it right, either.

These refs suck. Really badly. The real ones suck a little less. Gain some perspective and relax.

I would venture to say "most games" have been officiated just fine, meaning no major incidents. The bad games have been hideously bad.

Most of the country are looking at this in it's entirety, not just ONE play. Why do you have to base your entire argument on ONE call and make a general opinion out of it. Most of the US is basing their opinion on the rest of the bad calls during the first 3 weeks. There were quite a few bad calls in just the MNF game.

I think you need to gain some perspective.

The overreaction is warranted for many reasons. If for nothing else, these refs aren't controlling the game. Because of the lack of understanding the rules, the refs have made terrible calls and undermined any kind of respect that players/coaches/announcers/fans/media have for them. That Seattle/GB game was the tipping point and not only for the shitty call at the end. The penalties and overturns turned it into a game of whoever has it last, wins. The actual talent on the field was marginalized by terrible officiating.

Regular refs have NEVER been under this type of microscope. I agree that the replacement refs have made more bad calls but they were also all rookies who have never reffed at a game of this speed. When the real refs return, look at them under the same microscope and I think you'll see the replacements weren't as bad as they were made out to be.

NBC picked the right year to hire an officiating consultant.

Jim Daopoulos, a long-time official and supervisor of officials, joined NBC this season. And he tells PFT that the NFL and NFL Referees Association have signed a new deal.

A crew is being assembled to work Thursday night’s game between the Browns and Ravens. Then, on Friday, the officials will travel to Dallas to retrieve their equipment and receive their game assignments for Sunday and Monday, with the same crews working together as last year.

Details are still not clear, but Daopoulos says that the much-debated pension issue was resolved with the current defined-benefit plan remaining in place for five years before switching to a 401(k)-style defined contribution plan.

Also, it’s believed that the deal will cover five more years before this one, which means that we’ll potentially be doing this again in 2018.

UPDATE 10:56 p.m. ET: Daopoulos has provided some more facts. The officials will vote on the deal in Dallas on Friday, at which time it will become final. They’ll then participate in a clinic, and head on Saturday to the game sites. Also, the officials will receive a pay raise of four percent, with 12 guaranteed game checks this year and 19 in subsequent years (including preseason). As to the checks they’ve missed this year, the officials will divvy up $2.5 million.

The microscope is, without a doubt, more magnified on the replacement refs. All we heard up leading up to week 1 and during week 1 was about the replacement refs and how the normal refs weren't out there. Then we have a few bad calls, which happen with the normal refs as well, and that is ALL that is talked about. To say the replacement refs aren't being looked at even closer than normal is absolutely absurd.

Anyone who says these referees are even remotely comparable to the regular officials is: A) A neo-conservative who absolutely must bash the referees' union; B) Helen Keller (blind and deaf); C) Vince McMahon; D) Seattle Seahawks' fans.
