if anything, the bears are going to lose out on the claim simply because everyone is saying they are going to put one in. if you are minnesota, dont you put in a claim just to cockblock them? detroit? or any other team with a higher waiver priority that thinks they got a shot at the playoffs? if i was a GM for another team, id do it just to not strengthen a team that might take my playoff spot.

I think the closer parallel is when Deion Sanders wanted to come out of retirement to play for the Oakland Raiders, which was either the Superbowl team or the one the year before it, can't quite remember. here's Deion, grandstanding on CBS, soaking up the attention, saying he would strongly consider it. he was technically still property of the Redskins, so when they released him from the reserve/retired list, Mary Schottenheimer who was coach of the San Diego Chargers at the time, put in a claim. "We are not mathematically eliminated from the playoffs yet. Of course we will take the opportunity to strengthen our team." Deion never bothered to put on the uniform.

Hear that, and you make a good point, but, if you are the Lions... isnt it worth it? there isnt some bottom feeder on your roster that you can send to bag groceries in exchange for a more competetive position in the wild card race? the Fords paid matt millen for years for sucking, and they handed out signing bonuses to high draft picks like it was nothing.

it's football, if you aren't willing to spend... to quote michael jordan... sell the team.

plus, and i could be wrong on this, but doesnt that money come out of Bowlen's pockets anyway? aren't the Bronco's on hook for that salary no matter what?

Yeah, but Schottenheimer and Sanders had issues in DC, and it was more of a revenge move than anything else (but it also stocked an asset.) It also didn't cost the Chargers a roster spot, because he was on the reserve/retired list. Orton, meanwhile, will cost a roster spot unless he doesn't want to report. Then he will go on the restricted list I think.

I am pretty sure that Washington will claim him. I said in the off-season they should trade for him, but that the McNabb trade precluded any trade for a QB. He would fit well for the offense in DC.

The report that Orton would only report to the Bears came from the mouth of the ever reliable John Clayton. Isn't this the same guy who reported Mike Shanahan WAS going to be the Chiefs next head coach a few off-seasons ago? Guy is turrible.

Anyways, Orton is a better passer than Cassel so the AFC West race for the division should be interesting.
