Missouri originally passed an ordinance of secession during the Civil War, regardless of the events that followed. Therefore, they're automatically eligible for entrance into the SEC.

Because you can't spell secession without SEC.

Over the last ten years, WVU has played 6 SEC games. A home and home with a mediocre pre-Cam Newton Auburn (split), a home and home with an abysmal Mississippi State program (won both), last year at LSU (loss) and the 2005 Sugar Bowl against Georgia (won).

Mizzou doesn’t commit to Big 12, SEC still an option

COLUMBIA | The fractured Big 12 Conference attempted to join hands and unify Thursday night, but Missouri’s grip may not be as tight.

Not only did MU chancellor Brady Deaton and athletic director Mike Alden decline to confirm the university’s commitment in the long or short term to the Big 12, the Tigers’ interest in the Southeastern Conference is very much alive.

“We either stick in the Big 12 because everything came about the way it needs to, the right way, with all the differences being settled in Missouri’s favor,” a university administrator who asked not to be identified told The Star on Thursday night. “But what are the odds of that happening?

“The other option is to join another conference and I believe that is something that we’re very open to.”

The Star first reported earlier this week that Missouri had an informal offer from the Southeastern Conference to join should the Big 12 not remain a viable home.

Id rather have Kansas than Mizzou in the big 12 at least they'd bring some competition in basketball. Neither school can hang in football or baseball.

Mizzou will bring another AAU Member and with Georgia's pending acceptance that would make 4 for the win at all costs conference.

Mizzou has a very good baseball team and has always been alright at basketball (not great, but as good as the SEC bottom feeders), but football is where it's at, and looking at Mizzou's commitment to success under Gary Pinkel I can definitely see them competing (and beating) teams like Arkansas, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Kentucky, Vandy, Tennessee, and Georgia. The top schools could be upset too. Any given Saturday! I'm not saying they'd come in and dominate from Day 1, but I think they could be a solid middle-of-the-pack school in the SEC next year.

WVU "competes" in the Big Least....sometimes. UF, LSU, Alabama and Auburn win National Championships in the SEC.

I would love to have WV in the SEC. We could always use another 2nd tier team good for an occasional upset.

If it makes you feel any better atlas ive saw sources that say WVU did inquire about the ACC and SEC and both conferences turned them down. Im not denying they dont bring something to the table in football, but media markets is what drives these conference changes for tv contracts.

ive seen the same sources, and they have been proven wrong... WVU is still very much in the mix for an SEC bid...

Competing is more than beating a lower tier conference member. As I said, your win against Georgia was very nice...however, the other 3 wins come against mediocre opponents. It's like saying you can compete in the PAC 12 after beating ASU and Washington State.

You probably could compete...if you get those occasionally great classes like you had with Pat White & Co. Most SEC schools reload, year after year; they don't need to bank on that one superstar (i.e. Mizzou a few years back with Chase Daniel, Rutgers with Ray Rice, Pitt with Larry Fitzgerald.)

I just don't see WVU being an upper echelon SEC team if they ever join. They'll be a consistent middle of the pack team, with the occasional great season thrown in...like South Carolina or Ole Miss.
