The first Tobey Maguire Spiderman was actually a pretty sarcastic smart ass. They killed the concept in the subsequent sequels.

This looks so much unbelievably better than the pile of trash that passed as the original trilogy. I like the actor, I like the villian, the special effects don't look as shitty as Tobey Spidey 1. The original spider man movies are dead to me like X-Men 3 and Rocky 5 and 6.
How old are you? You are comparing special effects technology that is light years ahead of what we were getting in the early 2000s. Look at the progress between 2004 and 2007 alone, we had Transformers in 2007 start a crazy special FX revolution, than had movies like Ironman and T2 and Avatar introduce some outstanding tech.
If you don't like the movie a better argument would be that Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi, essentially ruined the spirit of Spiderman by making him a sensitive, sappy fuck and bringing in his biggest villains and outside of Doc Oc(Saved by Alfred Molina's acting), making them all laughable morons.
Back in the day the Spiderman movies won awards for their special effects, the second one won an Oscar for it. I watch LOTR now and I am like wow....we thought these were the best graphics ever at the time.

I agree with you, but I do remember thinking the special effects in Spiderman 1 and 2 were laughably bad. Most significantly was when Peter discovered his powers and they had a claymation looking Peter jumping from building to building.
