I'm most shocked that you haven't played NFS yet with as much of a racing game fantastic as you are.

Dark Souls is deep as shit, almost impenetrable it seems. I am going to try to get my foot in my door before classes start but goddamn seems like quite the investment.

Gaming Memory Lane

I played and finished this game as young kid on the NES. $50 game from TRU when you had to grab the paper ticket and bring it to the topsecret gaming booth. That booth was like a Gaming Mecca.

Dateline 1987, I remember buying one of the coolest games ever; Ultima Exodus. What I did not know at the time was that Ultima Exodus would shape me as a future gamer.

My first team was a Fighter, Paladin, Wizard and Cleric. I had a Thief on the side too, which I occasionally called in for some covert activities. As best as I can remember Ultima Exodus was the first game that gave you a LINE of characters. Instead of seeing one person when you moved around the world you saw all 4 characters walking in a nice single file line. I found this so freaking cool! I mean, dude, I could snake around and make it look like my Fighter in the front was talking to my Cleric in the back. Yeah, normally I don’t think those two classes would have had much to say to one another, but I was bridging the class gap by putting them face to face.


The Thief is the guy in the up left corner who looks like a urologist.
Like Zelda, Adventures of Link and Dragon Warrior I was used to encountering some NPCs in towns, but Ultima’s had just about the dumbest ones ever. I mean they rarely, like 10% of the time, had anything useful to say. Some claimed to be the designers of the game, while others went on about liking cheese. Oh, but there were one NPCs that really got under my skin.

Not sure why, but I had a thing against Lord British. Maybe I felt he was all cocky sitting on his throne, not leveling up my troops when I felt they deserved it… but from time to time I would attacked his highness. I first tried to overthrow the king early in the game, and then again later when I felt more prepared with better weapons, armor and spells. If you have played any Ultima games you will know that Lord British is a GOD there and he has unlimited Hit Points. After several ass whoopings I came to respect Lord British and even paid him such a honor that I would not ride my horses into the castle.
At the time this game was released I could not imagine anything better. I mean it had it all. It had different character classes and spells. Different armor and weapons, a variety of monsters and crazy maze like dungeons… it was a real D&D style video game and I loved it. You never forget that magical moment that you commandeer your first pirate boat and sail right into the maelstrom… Ah, the memories.

So during a late 1980’s summer I played and beat Ultimawhoppings Exodus. I held that game in the highest regard for many years to follow. I whistled the music, I even would start a new game from time to time just to cast the Repel or Undead Spells on some of the early level baddies. A few years after it came out, I started a second serious game with all less character classes: Ranger, Lark, Illusionist and Paladin, but sadly I never finished.
When I start a game of Ultima now, using the magic of emulators, the music automatically takes me back to my childhood days playing the NES. The overworld music and the combat music is just so addictive that I hum it in my sleep!

I remember getting my first NES from TRU. Well, technically it was my second NES because we already had one at my dad's (parents divorced). I was able to convince my mom to give me my xmas present a few weeks early and the only thing I wanted was an NES. She called every store we could think of and finally found a TRU (coincidentally the one that is located in my current patrol district) that had one left. The manager tells us that it doesn't have the "magazine" with it though. At the time each console came with a Nintendo Player's Guide (I think that's what it was called). I wanted an NES so bad I didn't care. We drive out there, getting lost on the way because my mom was horrible with directions and it was way before GPS, and find out it's the floor model they were referring to. Again, I didn't care because I wanted it so bad and I think they were selling it for a discount anyway. The guy packs it up and we rush home, getting lost yet again. I hook it up even though I have no games to play. I'm trying to show my mom how everything works (like she gave a crap) and I say "The games go in here." I open the game slot door and the Track & Field cartridge was in there! It was the game they were using at the store to demo the unit and they forgot to take it out. LOL. I played the shit out of that game and got pretty damn good at it. I never used that spoon trick either. I didn't even find out about it until years and years later actually.

Looked in the bargain bin at the local K-Mart (one day I'm just going to say "fuck it" and hit up the Waterfront Mission and buy whatever cheap old system and bounty of games they have on hand) the other day...

Found and bought a copy of Binary Domain for $15, a copy of Assassin's Creed II for $20, a copy of Yakuza of the Dead for $20 and a copy of the DS' Aliens: Infestation.

Felt like the Island of Misfit Toys but for decent niche games that never got a shot at the big time.

And ACII because they had to put them somewhere to make room for ACIII.

So more on my eccentric purchase:

When downloading the game data for Binary Domain onto your HD, the game uses the Sixaxis on the control to simulate the hands on screen as you move the screen in front of you.

A song from the sound track (random Jap-Pop with techno mixed in) plays and you can swap a few stills to look at until the game finishes installing.

Also, every image simulates 3-D (like what you see in the movies nowadays) so when you turn the controller, you can see behind the image.

Pretty neat trick.

Further analysis:

The game runs like a normal 3rd-person Squad Shooter.

Aside from yourself, you can issue orders to other teammates to take out enemies, get into cover, etc.

The rub is, there's also the option to issue said orders using a game mic. :michaelscott:

Best part is, the voice recognition isn't perfect (you gotta say specific lines like what ME3 does with the Kinect on 360) so it'll pick background noise if you don't adjust the values before hand.

So at any moment, you can get Paul Rudd'd like Ray Lewis did in that one Madden Commercial.
