I wouldn't call this a survival horror game either. It hints at it at times, but it's way too combat focused by the end.

Survival horror is a dumb genre description anyway.

I think I'm getting close to the end. Even though there are still serious combat situations I have not felt like I'm playing a shooter. I still feel like I'm in constant survival mode and every bullet counts.

I will say that finding

 

the flamethrower was a bit much but damn if that thing doesn't work amazingly against infected.

I have heard that Hard gets pretty serious with the "every bullet counts" thing, but on normal, I could have gotten into a shoot outs for the last 1/3 of the game and still finished with ammo to spare.

I still have ammo to spare per se, but I'm constantly running out with one weapon and having to switch mid-fight to something else.

Didn't realize you were that far out. Where you're at is probably my favorite part of the game.

So I hit Winter and just had a scene that was straight out of

 

Call of Duty zombies mode.

Hunting that deer was pretty damn cool.

This is one of the most immersive games I can remember playing in recent memory. I just constantly find myself thinking I'm in the characters shoes and being extra careful with everything I do as if I'm really in a fight for survival.

I also love the variety in the levels. You go from abandoned warehouses, to sewers, to riding on horseback and then snowy resort cabin areas.

Lol, come to think of it, I never used that thing after I found it.

Oh man, that thing is so bad ass. I took out a group of about seven infected with that thing. It was glorious.

No, the online is amazing, not many other games where you actually have to think before doing something.

Multiplayer is really impressive. The only thing I didn't like was shooting some guys point blank with with the shorty and they're still standing. I didn't notice any armor either but that stuff can be subtle in a gun fight. I think our most impressive match was when we played that one game of Survival, mostly because Lopez and I needed the trophy. I think we were down 3-1 and we got our shit together and worked those bitches. Jon in particular was fucking shit up.

I also finished the campaign this morning. I finished in just under 20 hours with 127 collectibles. Apparently there are 140+ so I have some hunting to do. The only other trophy I got was for unlocking all the shiv doors. While playing MP last night someone said that if I were to start a new game on Hard, not Normal+ I would lose all of my upgrades? Is that accurate? I guess I can't just start on Hard+?

The campaign was fucking incredible. I'm not sure what else to say. I don't think I've ever been so immersed in a game before in my life. I only remember maybe a handful of times being pulled out of the experience by what I describe as "gamey" parts or elements of the game.

 

In particular the "boss fight" with the sicko child molester David guy. Creeping around that diner with broken glass everywhere fit the narrative but it still seemed out of place to me.

I expected the game to be good but not this fucking good. And even though early reports were saying the game was 15-20hrs I thought that would be bullshit. I'm guessing I'm on the high range of completion time but I do a pretty good job of exploring areas for ammo, collectibles, upgrades, etc. I was pleasantly surprised with how long it was and not once did I think "Ok, let;s end this shit already" as I often do considering my massive backlog. I thought the ending was pretty damned good too.

Now I guess on to another play through to find all those damn collectibles!
