Came across an article from May that I never heard about.
CONCACAF has submitted a proposal to FIFA to alter it's World Cup Qualification stages and to have 4 spots in the WC instead of the 3.5 (with the other half belonging to CONMEBOL)
The last format for 2010, was to have the top 13 auto advance to round 2, the bottom 22 to play in a random draw 2 leg situation. Winners would advance to round 2 to play the bye teams in another 2 leg match.
Top 12 remaining teams would be split into 3 groups of 4, home/away matches, top 2 advance to round 4.
The 6 team round 4, everyone plays home/away, top 3 go to World Cup, 4th place plays 5th place in CONMEBOL in a 2 leg playoff to get that "half" spot.
It was really shitty by design IMO, first two rounds are a waste as only one nation from round one even got through to round 3. They just get pounded in the 2nd round by the stronger nations.
The new proposal is this.
Round One
Top 32 nations, 4 teams, 8 groups. Home/away matches, top 2 advance.
Round Two
16 nations, 4 teams, 4 groups. Home/away matches, top 2 advance.
Round Three
8 nations, 4 teams, 2 groups. Group winners go to WC. 2nd place teams play off in a 2 leg match, winner goes to WC, loser plays 5th place from CONMEBOL in a 2 leg to get that half spot.
However, CONCACAF has requested 4 spots in the WC instead of 3.5. Not sure who they want FIFA to take the half spot away from. If granted, then the top 2 teams in Round 3 advance to WC without those 2 leg playoffs.
Neat stuff, should make CONCACAF qualifying much more entertaining. Under last WC's format, nothing to really pay attention to until Round 3 and a couple bad games would end it there.....so really you could watch 1 or 2 matches and then that would be it for your nation.
