I'm deep into Season 4 but this is after taking a year break (stopped watching for a couple weeks while moving and never started back into it). Need to restart the season but am just trying to plow through. I really just want to dedicate this summer to watching the whole series again.

Homicide was a great show too. The book was great as well. One of the detectives mentioned in it, that later became a character on The Wire, Jay Landsman, now works for our department in Homicide. He doesn't look anything like that fat ass on the show though.

The Wire is still the GOAT.

Nothing has ever beaten it for attention to detail. Every little thing that happens on screen matters / is relevent later. This was always my favorite part: absolutely every moment is important, and you realize it more and more on your second and third tours through the series.

No other show has ever presented its own unique themes per season while still holding on to a main story. The only shows that have come close... were based on books. The Wire could have had books inspired by it. It never goes that way around.

No other show has ever explained modern society in the way The Wire does. I am not exaggerating here: I honestly feel like it should be required viewing for everyone in high school social studies. You can watch the show from start to finish and have a greater understanding of how society works and the problems within it than anything on the required reading list gets close to. It's definitely more relevent to our world than anything written 100, 200 years ago.

Come on fellas, don't diminish something amazing: The Wire matters more than anything else we've ever seen on television and it's going to be a long time before anything can hold its jock. Homeland is probably the closest, but that's 1 season down, so in the words of the immortal Winston Wolfe, "let's not start sucking each others dicks just yet"

Nobody said the Wire wasn't the GOAT. We were arguing the quality of shows that try to live up to the standard the Wire has created. Dexter failed, Breaking Bad is succeeding.

Dexter would never come close to being compared to The Wire because it's a completely different genre and show. It's about 1 person. Simply not enoug layers or storylines to do about a show based on 1 main character.

Same can be said for BB. Good show but it doesn't touch The Wire in terms of depth.

The only thing that has the potential to be as great is Game of Thrones because there are so many great characters intertwined with each other and each move has consequences on a massive scale for everyone involved in the story.

Pretty much this. BB is a great serial drama, but it's so narrow in scope compared to The Wire. There are 6-7 characters that require development every week in Breaking Bad, while The Wire wove the story line of 50-100 characters at all times.

I do think if we're directly comparing BB and Dexter, the former shits on the latter due to its better storytelling. Too many side stories that don't matter in Dexter, too many formulaic deux es machinas that work the plot along. Also, BB has been much better at creating suspense post-S4 of Dexter.

Just power through the first season man. It's tough, but it does pick up towards the end. It's the weirdest season of the series in my opinion (although a lot of people think that about season 2) because it seems to literally pick up in the middle of a book. The whole show is a slow burn in general, but the first season is all about paying attention to EVERY tiny thing, and that builds the characters, and then each season just builds more. It took me a couple of tries to really plow through season 1, but once I got to about episode 7 or 8 (it's a pretty significant situation in whatever episode it is, you'll know it) and I was hooked from then on.

I liked Kima when they were basically making her like McNulty's wingman/confidant. Season 4 she is kind of just there and then season 5 she's a fucking wet blanket.

At first I hated everything about her. But then she kind of grew on me because she was different, loyal, and true to the game.

I absolutely hated the way she talked at first, then I started imitating her randomly sometimes at home by myself.
